Enrico Sassi has revamped this historic building, located in Gandría and with privileged views of Lake Lugano, after over a century of abandonment.

Though the building was in a poor state, the Swiss firm proposed to preserve its original appearance as much as possible, and defer to the history and landscape of the spectacular enclave. Intervention would be limited to consolidating what already exists, delicately enlarging the exterior terrace, and internally connecting the three levels with a new staircase.

The three levels are a basement with a barrel vault excavated in the rock, a ground floor, and an upper floor formerly reachable only from outside. Some walls inside were torn down to show the rock of the site and to build the new staircase in exposed reinforced concrete. Everything else has been either left as is or restored.

Common spaces full of design in North Carolina

Among the 250 companies housed on the 2,800-hectare Research Triangle Park corporate campus in North Carolina, a recent project stands out for its innovative use of design to create a space for collaboration, creativity and interaction. Elisa Christopher, from Phillips Architecture design studio, was commissioned for this project in which the company wanted to give a new look to a lobby and staircase area using Dekton by Cosentino.

The client wanted a material that would surprise potential and existing employees and create a striking appearance at first glance. The designer had already worked with Cosentino in the past and thought that it would be the ideal material to add character and elegance to the space. At Cosentino’s industrial park in Almería, Christopher was able to see the product first hand and discover the endless design possibilities that Dekton has to offer. Taking advantage of its technical and aesthetic properties on such a large campus was a challenge for her and she jumped at the chance.

Balanced contemporary aesthetics

The colour selected for this project was Soke, inspired by classic cement floors with realistic veining on a nuanced grey background. The advantage of this material is mainly that, in addition to providing a contemporary aesthetics with a concrete look and feel, it is virtually maintenance free and offers great versatility for different applications. In the case of this project, it was used for interior cladding, the lift surrounds and the main staircase. In the last two applications, it featured a modern lighting design around it.

The final look creates a lot of visual harmony and brings consistency to the design concept. Soke’s simple colour is perfect when combined with other features such as, in this case, the geometric patterned rug and the wood and metal details.

An award-winning refurbishment of a legendary hotel in Gran Canaria

The ‘Premio Nacional Macael’ (Spanish Macael National Prize) has been awarded this year by the Fundación Marca Macael (Marca Macael Foundation) to the recently refurbished Lopesan Costa Meloneras Hotel, in recognition of the architectural and aesthetic value of the comprehensive refurbishment carried out in this iconic four-star Resort & Spa located in Las Palmas. In this refurbishment project, undertaken by Juan Francisco García and the Lopesan Hotel Group’s own design department, more than 7,000 square metres of marble, granite and ultra-compact Dekton surface have been fitted.

The project stands out for its large scale and its integration into the landscape and the context in which it is located, one of the most exclusive tourist areas on the island of Gran Canaria. Surrounded by the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve and next to its emblematic Boulevard, the Lopesan Costa Meloneras Hotel is updated paying homage to its own history. Opened 20 years ago, with 1,136 rooms, 2,700 beds and more than 70,000 m2 of outdoor areas, it has become one of the largest hotels in Spain.

Multiple colours, textures and applications

The refurbishment has added a contemporary and innovative style to many areas of the hotel, from the gardens, swimming pools, restaurants and exteriors to the rooms and common areas. Crema Marfil marble, Negro Marquina and Negro Eclipse have been used to clad the columns, the floors of the reception area and the bathrooms in the rooms, bringing great elegance and sophistication to these areas. Meanwhile, Negro Zimbawe and Negro Tezal granites have been chosen for the floors and steps. And Dekton Zenith, Domoos, Opera, Kelya, Sirius and Orix have been used for worktops, bathroom and bathtub cladding, buffets, table tops, countertops in bathroom and common areas, and stools in the pool area.

The benefits of stone combined with Dekton surface

The strength and hardness of the natural stone used in this project blends with the various applications of Cosentino’s Dekton surface, providing a number of other technical advantages. In particular, Dekton has been used for applications such as worktops or even outdoor stools, taking advantage of its high resistance to stains, scratches and temperature changes. This, together with its easy maintenance and cleaning, makes it the perfect material for the most used areas in a hotel, guaranteeing an ‘as new’ appearance over time.

Natural shapes and light colours in this house in Brazil

Luxury and sophistication suit the tastes of the owners of this house in Florianópolis, Brazil, designed by Ana Paula Ronchi Arquitetura. In this house, natural lines and a range of neutral and light tones create functional and versatile spaces in which customised pieces designed by the architecture studio itself have been added.

Dekton Arga was used for this project, not only for its beauty but also for its technical properties. ‘We chose Cosentino materials for their strength and sophistication, as well as for their perfect integration with the range of colours designed for this project,’ the studio explains.

A durable and practical material

Dekton gives continuity to the design by fitting into the different features and spaces of the house. The Arga colour, inspired by the Taj Mahal quartzite, achieves the luxurious shine of natural stone. This material shows fine light-coloured veins, ranging from light brown to golden. A high-gloss finish with a strong visual impact that is both hard-wearing and practical. As a common theme in the design concept of this house, it is used to clad the kitchen worktops, the fireplace, the barbecue, the Home TV and the bathroom washbasin.

A hotel bar perfect for sophisticated gatherings

Creating a new layout for the bar, with a design based on warm colours and special materials to give it a unique touch, was the wish of the owner of the Van der Valk Hotel Duiven, located in the city of the same name, in The Netherlands. The proposed design for this radical change, realised in collaboration with the Hans Nuijten and Nijboer studios, was beyond expectations. The result is a bar area with a luxurious and intimate atmosphere, full of quality details.

A perfect combination of a homely atmosphere and an ideal business environment. Furthermore, the use of different types of illumination and materials, including Dekton, has resulted in a space of great versatility and functionality.

The charm of natural stone

From the outset, the project designer was clear about the colour to be used to define the character of the space. Dekton Khalo, a colour inspired by Patagonia natural stone, was the perfect solution to give the space the elegant touch of this granite so appreciated for the richness of its colours. Its subtle spots in black, pale gold and coffee brown blend in perfectly with the bar furniture. Furthermore, thanks to its polished finish, achieved through Dekton XGloss technology, Khalo features a special texture that is enhanced here by a combination of subdued lighting and highlights.

The most durable bar

The worktop in Dekton Khalo is the perfect match for the large square bar in the centre of the space, fully equipped with state of the art appliances. Dekton’s technical features are particularly suitable for this work surface. High durability, scratch and stain resistance and easy cleaning make Dekton the perfect solution to ensure that the surface stays looking as good as new.

The Madrid firm BURR proposes a departure from the deep-rooted concept of ‘building a home for a whole lifetime’ through a house that can be adapted to the owners’ changing socioeconomic circumstances and address their future needs. MG08 thus opens up a wide range of possible ways to occupy one same ground-level space that previously served va-rious purposes (industrial, commercial, sports), the memory of which is deliberately evoked through the chosen gamut of materials.

María Guerrero is a house split into two. It currently harbors two dwellings, each with a patio of its own, enabling the proprietors to inhabit one half and rent out the other, and in that way shoulder the costs of acquisition and construction. In future the wall separating the two homes can be torn down, making the property a single residence with a large courtyard and a study-cum-bath opening out to the street; a larger house with two bathrooms and a small business space, ultimately a single home.

Bitelhaus proposes a new concept of weekend houses, one where versatility, low maintenance, and openness to the exterior take priority.

On the outskirts of Buenos Aires, the house by Alric Galindez is a bold and elegant single linear volume set perpendicularly to the street to get the best orientations and respect the mighty trees preexisting on the plot. The whole facade presents a system of mobile panels that ensures low maintenance and makes the building easy to open out to the garden and close up when not in use.

The linearity facilitates organization of the domestic program, allowing a half-covered space to be the house’s main room and distribution area, and maintaining indoor climate through cross ventilation. Continuous barrel vaults have different curvatures. This creates different environments, regulates the entrance of light and the flow of air, and generates a rhythm through the entire interior.

A home with plenty of light

Natural light is the main feature of this 230 m2 family home located on Calle San Juan de La Salle in Madrid. The Villalón Studio team needed to create functional and versatile spaces that could suit all members of the family, regardless of the occasion or time of day. To this end, the abundance of light entering the house, thanks to its position, has been key to optimising the space to the maximum and making the most of each room.

For the dining room, María Villalón and her team opted for light cream and grey tones, both for the upholstery of the sofas (Tapicerías Ilarcuris) and the rugs as well as for the walls, flooring and furniture, while darker colours were used for the wood in some of the chairs and for a small bar designed to make and serve cocktails, one of the owner’s passions. Furthermore, rattan plays an important role, as it is found in the doors of the auxiliary unit situated in one of the sides, as well as in the screens, designed by Pablo Yubero, which act as mobile separators that can adapt the room and the lighting, depending on the desired intimacy or openness.

A large travertine table has been chosen as the centrepiece. A unique piece that undoubtedly draws all the attention and gives this space a great prominence, due to the exclusivity and originality of natural stone. The result is a welcoming, ever-changing and stylish space in which works of art such as those by the Gärna Art Gallery and Beatriz Aiguabella add a touch of colour.

An island that brightens up the kitchen

In the kitchen, maximum use has been made of the space, with an island designed with Dekton Taga, from the Stonika Collection, which is characterised by its blend with nature and its high-shine colours. Taga is a greyish colour with marble-like crystalline veining inspired by the Taj Mahal quartzite, which features all the advantages of Dekton surfaces, such as high resistance to stains, high temperatures, scratches and impacts.

On the island, made by Mármoles Cuesta, is the hob and sink area, followed by a small wooden kitchen diner next to some chairs, where you can eat with the family, have a drink with guests while cooking or use it for any other purpose.

The same natural and minimalist style has been used for the bedroom and bathroom, with the main focus on natural elements such as wood in tables and seats, and organic fabrics in cushions, headrests or curtains. In addition, the natural light that enters through the large windows is, once again, the best ally of the spaces, helping to bring dynamism and spaciousness to every corner of this home.

The beauty of marble to clad the façade of a hospital

DYS architecture chose Dekton for the stylish façade cladding of the Leon Judah Blackmore Pavilion at Vancouver General Hospital. The renovation of the building is a tribute to Leon Judah Blackmore, a Polish immigrant who made Canada his home and flourished as a businessman and real estate developer. In memory of his passion and contribution to the community, his philanthropic foundation donated $18.4 million to the hospital after his death.

Two years after that, the hospital’s Centenary Pavilion has been renovated and now bears his name as a tribute. The Vancouver-based Cosentino team collaborated on the project by supplying the Dekton Aura15 cladding material used on the façade that frames the entrance to the building.

The perfect match

Inspired by natural marbles such as Carrara and Calacatta, Aura15 was chosen for its elegance and technical features. Its white background crossed by grey veins blends perfectly with the grey edges of the façade and the silver signs with the name of the pavilion. The result is an elegant style that brings calm and balance to the hospital atmosphere, where Aura15 adds the sophistication of stone.

For many years to come

Thanks to its technical features, Dekton provides a highly durable material which requires no maintenance and is unaffected by wear and tear, UV rays, extreme temperatures and stains such as graffiti, making it ideal for the emergency entrance of this hospital, which is exposed daily to heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Therefore, although the initial specifications for the project called for marble, the ultra-compact Dekton surface was chosen for its high durability and ease of maintenance. Sustainability was also a plus when choosing it, as Dekton improves the energy efficiency of the building. Thus, Aura15 will be the face of the Leon Judah Pavilion for many years to come.

With a built area of 204 square meters, it was designed in compliance with two mandates: respect the pine trees on the grounds; and keep the property unfenced but for a low, 50-centimeter stone wall. Just a stone’s throw away is the beach, so the path to the house is much used in summer. One challenge in the project was to protect the privacy of the occupants.

The structure presents 2.2-meter-tall walls of reinforced concrete holding up a roof made of semicircular vaults, glazed and colored green, that cantilever over the south facade. The concrete walls stretch on beyond the limits of the indoor spaces, creating two semicircular courtyards – one within the other – that also contribute to ensuring the family’s privacy.
