Challenges of a delicate restoration

When the architect Leandro M. del Río was offered this project in the coastal town of Arteixo, in northern Spain, he had to address important building challenges. The idea was to restore a building from the 1960s with a low load-bearing capacity where limitations of energy demand and sound insulation had to be resolved. The success of this restoration lay in the use of a material that could withstand the coastal environment and could easily hide the installations and building elements.

The developer proposed the use of a ventilated façade with ceramic cladding. Based on this proposal, the architect and marble supplier found the perfect solution in Dekton. Thanks to Dekton, they solved the structural and functional problems encountered, while providing an optimum aesthetic result in record time.

Dekton Sirius ventilated façade

Thirty-eight 1.2cm thick Dekton Sirius slabs were used to clad the façade, which corresponds to a total surface area of 175m2. These slabs are easy to maintain and are supported on a stainless steel and aluminium structure that is highly resistant to moisture. This solution creates a space between the Dekton cladding and the support, which makes it possible to hide the installations and to dismantle them at any time.

One of the key features of this ventilated façade system is its flexibility, as it can easily be modified or adapted to the needs of the house. In the case of this house in Arteixo, the solution was ideal for a residential building for short-term rentals.

The façade is the part of the building that is subject to the most wear and tear as it is continuously exposed. The selection of the façade material is critical to protecting the structural elements and ensuring the energy efficiency of the building. Dekton offers a unique solution in the market because it is a beautiful material available in a wide range of thicknesses and large formats. Dekton is the first choice of thousands of professionals to cover the “skin” of their buildings due to its high resistance to the sun, stains and temperature changes; as well as its colour stability.

When the architect falls in love with a material

In 2017 the Milanese architect, Maurizio Barbotti, was looking for a material that was more than plain ceramic and with high resistance both indoors and outdoors. Barbotti had just started his most personal project: the building from scratch of a private villa in the small town of Legnano, located a few kilometres from Milan.

It was during this research process, while walking around the Salone del Mobile, that he discovered Cosentino. It was certainly love at first sight. Cosentino had just launched the Industrial Collection at the Milan Design Week, and Barbotti found in it the perfect choice for the flooring and cladding of his new house, which he used in different colours, thicknesses and formats.

All Dekton’s possibilities in interior design

Barbotti’s Villa is part of a complex of six small houses. In the early stages of project specification, the architect stressed the importance of choosing materials that could speak for themselves. He found in Dekton a strong and resistant material perfect for open spaces and, at the same time, flexible to adapt to all kinds of designs.

In this way, Dekton was used in Villa Barbotti in different colours and finishes, from the flooring and cladding, to different areas of the house: kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms and living room. And last but not least, it’s worth giving a nod to the stunning Silestone colour Eternal Marquina – a luxurious black with white veins – as the highlight of the living room.

This interior design project is a great example of the use of Dekton and Silestone in a residential environment, as well as of the endless possible combinations in terms of thicknesses, cuts, colours, finishes… Cosentino always comes up with an ideal solution for every architect, interior designer or builder’s creative project, no matter how challenging it may seem.

Design and durability go hand-in-hand

The Charles is the new residential project in Buckhead Village, one of the most attractive districts in the city of Atlanta, USA. The new building opened its doors to the public in the spring of 2019 with its “Residence Collection” comprising of 57 apartments and penthouses, which have now almost all been sold.

One of the most interesting architectural details can be seen from afar: its enormous facade is covered with 1,115 m2 of Dekton Danae on the ground floor retail space and Dekton Domoos on the 22 residential floors. The architecture studio Lord, Aeck & Sargent chose this material after analysing its versatility and resistance for the design.

Custom-made divisions that do not detract from the features

The architect was looking for a material that would allow him to play around with dividing up the complex in different sizes and create a specific pattern for the building. This was achieved on the retail floor, creating a unique design that is also technically interesting and leaves the studio’s imprint on the project.

The aesthetic was paramount in this project, which also needed a long-lasting material that was resistant to stains as well as potential graffiti, and available in a wide range of colours. The decision to use Dekton in the two different finishes enabled the architects to play around with the complex’s dual purpose: retail and residential, keeping the whole building coherent.

Exclusivity inspired by Dekton and Silestone

The beaches of the South Atlantic still boast lush areas of virtually unspoilt nature, even in towns where the economic boom has driven rapid growth, such as Itapema in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.

Itapema’s urban planning strategy is focused on respecting the region’s environment by limiting the height of buildings and promoting sustainable construction. Based on these concepts, the Infinity Club Residence is a luxury apartment building that combines neoclassical interior design with open spaces in which the light and textures of Cosentino’s surfaces play a leading role.

Infinity Club - Infinity Residence Gabriela Herde 32 200

Sustainability starts with materials

Every apartment in the Infinity Club Residence offers its tenants a selection of ample spaces, from a beautiful garden area that leads to an impressive swimming pool on the building’s main terrace, to communal leisure areas, a gymnasium, lounges with sea views and bathrooms worthy of a five-star hotel. Many of the most striking surfaces have been designed using Dekton and Silestone.

The spacious and luminous kitchens are just one example, designed as a space for family and friends to come together to cook and relax around the remarkable worktop made from Dekton Trilium. With a thickness of 20 mm, it was inspired by the intense grey and dark reflections of volcanic stone. Trilium looks stunning while also promoting the sustainability of the building, which has been built with a remarkable 80% of recycled materials.

Easy to maintain elegance

Kensho by Silestone is a mottled grey with a soft and uniform grain, subtly enhancing outdoor spaces designed for relaxation as well as the bathrooms and indoor pool area, where Kensho has been used for the washbasins. Silestone is a material that barely requires any maintenance and resists the damage caused by the most common everyday stains.

An elegant colour with a clean and flawless finish was chosen for the suites’ bathrooms. Zeus White by Silestone in Suede finish is a failsafe choice for areas where hygiene and cleanliness are paramount.

The Infinity Club Residence in Itapema has made optimum use of Cosentino’s wide range of shades and textures while benefitting from the first-class technical features of Dekton and Silestone as key elements in the home.

A design point transforming an entire building

Right in the heart of Chicago, barely a ten-minute walk from City Hall, is 444 N Orleans, a recently refurbished building with a privileged location.

The particularly striking 444 N Orleans is distinctive thanks to an impressive corner fully clad in Dekton, in large-format slabs with an innovative and daring design, in contrast with the classic brick which can be seen across most of the city.

Chicago 444 - chicago 444 21 240

Dekton resists even the most extreme conditions

All architects and designers have to grapple with a major setback to all construction work carried out in Chicago: the unbelievable variations in temperatures that affect the city all year round. In summer, this enormous city, with its almost ten million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, sees temperatures of around 30 degrees Celsius. With the arrival of winter, however, and the Arctic winds coming straight in from Canada, the city turns into a gigantic icebox at -29 degrees.

The snow and the humidity push the materials on external surfaces which are constantly exposed, particularly façades, to the limit. There are few materials that can resist it without losing their properties, including their colour. It was in this context that the architects of 444 N Orleans came across Dekton, Cosentino’s ultra-compact surface able to withstand major thermal variations, highly humid environments and high UV insolation.

One continuous large-format streak

To provide a cover for the corner of 444 N Orleans, an elegant colour was sought that would directly bring to mind the city’s natural surroundings, on the shores of vast Lake Michigan, which is usually frozen over in winter. With its white tones and greyish veining, Aura 15 is evocative of the whimsical patterns and images which form on the lake during the harshness of winter.

The large-scale effect has been enhanced through the possibility of providing a continuous vein across the façade pattern. This is a challenging aesthetic aspect to achieve, but one which has tremendous impact.

This being a façade, the project leaders also sought out a material that would be well-resistant to staining and, in particular, to graffiti – a universal urban challenge. Dekton met this requirement.

Chicago 444 - chicago 444 221 244

A ventilated façade that was secure and quick to install

To install this façade, Stone System, a company with perfect knowledge of Cosentino’s materials, as well as knowledge of how to put them to optimal use, was called upon. In order to achieve 444 N Orleans, it was decided that a ventilated façade would be used because, among other reasons, of the properties it offers to the building in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation.

Bringing comfort into the office

Santiago is a buzzing cosmopolitan city in Chile that has enjoyed significant growth over the past few years. The city’s expansion has given way to new neighbourhoods and innovative projects in the world of architecture, including the NC3300. This premium office block with a residential design boasts 17,600 m2 of space for offices, shops, car parks, warehouses and communal areas.

Located in the exclusive neighbourhood of Nueva Costanera in the Vitacura district, this modern structure is already a landmark urban reference in the area thanks to both its design and use of the ultra-compact surface, Dekton.

NC3300 - NC3300 6 278

A versatile material perfect for a range of applications

Joining forces for this project, the Nueva Costanera property developer and the Argentinean architecture studio BMA decided to use only the best materials and surfaces on offer. After considering various options, it was concluded that the ultra-compact surface Dekton met all the needs for façade cladding, flooring for communal areas, office terraces and the Spa area.

Creating an aesthetically pleasing office block that did not compromise on the warm and welcoming design of a residential building was the challenge faced by the NC3300 architects. A difficult balance to achieve, however the Dekton colours Danae and Kairos succeeded by lending a professional, luxury finish that sets it apart from more traditional office blocks.

The tranquillity of Danae, the excellence of Kairos

Available in a wide variety of colours, tones and textures, Dekton never fails to meet the needs of a space. This example is found in Danae, which boasts soft beige tones that achieve a sense of calm and well-being. Other earthy colours are ideal to create welcoming spaces, and this was what was needed both for the flooring in the communal areas and on the terrace.

In turn, Kairos with delicate pale grey veining on a classic white marble background creates an elegant yet subtle ambience in the SPA area.

Sustainability in the workplace

The NC3300 building seeks to foster a sense of harmony for all those who work within its walls. With lofty ceilings and spacious communal areas, the space ensures businesses can work in maximum convenience and comfort.

Much more than an innovatively designed and decorated space, the building’s architects succeeded in taking the concept of modernity that one bit further. Thanks to its sustainable standards, the NC3300 was awarded with the LEED Gold certification recognising its commitment to saving energy and the ecological treatment of its building materials. Finding all these elements in one single building can only mean one thing: luxury.

Letting light in and using views were the objectives of the project to enlarge an old house in the Austrian city of Dornbirn.

Haus Hohlen - 00 3 294

Haus Hohlen was built in 1961 on a hill overlooking Dorbirn, Austria. The site, protected on the uphill side by a small forest, offers privileged views of the Rhine delta and Lake Constance. The 85-square-meter house became too small for the owners and in 2012 they decided to enlarge it, calling in the architect Jochen Specht. A first stage involved demolishing all elements deemed not essential to the preservation of the building. Due to the need for more space and the desire to revamp the facade, the intervention revolved around erecting a new envelope a certain distance from the perimeter of the old house, and with this, extending the roof on all sides. The new facade was raised with a frame of aluminum and wood, in tune with the forest,

using a system that benefits from the advantages of modern structures: prefabrication, quick construction, sustainability, and a pleasant indoor ambience. In contrast with the solidness of the original building, the new one presents a play of generous windows that make a point of capturing the privileged views of the valley and forest, creating an indoor space that is open and protected at the same time. Together with randomly arrayed closed wall panels, the windows generate a sophisticated facade pattern. The added interior space connects with the original home through the old windows, turned into passageways, niches, or entrances for light.

Casa Mérida is a single-family house located in the historic center of the city of Mérida, capital of Yucatán and epicenter of Mayan culture. The region’s year-round high temperatures made its architecture develop a characteristic style that is a mix of colonial and tropical, with a cross ventilation system determining design. There has, however, been a desertion of typical forms, for which air conditioning is to blame, having become indispensable to residents, used even 24 hours a day. Given such abuse of new technologies, the main objective here was to take a step backward and try to hit upon an efficient and sustainable ventilation system for surviving intense heat, while staying true to Yucatán identity. The relationship between traditional and contemporary architecture is explored through vernacular references. The plot is a rectangle 80 meters long and 8 wide; unique proportions commensurate to a unique volume of concrete positioned along the longitudinal axis, crossing the grounds from the entrance to the rear of the property, with a swimming

pool at the end. Returning to the traditional ventilation system based on concatenating high ceilings and patios, the elongated form is part of the effort to reclaim Mayan culture, specifically the Sacbé: white limestone path connecting temples, squares, pyramids and wells in Mayan cities. The project appropriates this concept and materializes it with the support of a concrete wall stretching parallel to the longitudinal axis that organizes the house, acting as spinal column and main structural element, and also setting a hierarchy of circulation routes throughout the dwelling. To make the cross ventilation more efficient, reducing energy consumption, the house is ultimately disconnected from the city. The living room and kitchen are pushed closer to the pool at the back of the plot, where it is more peaceful and outside noise is minimized. The design inverts the traditional concept of a house with a garden, creating a garden with a house within it, which stays open and encourages outdoor life without sacrificing safety and privacy.

An oasis of light in the heart of Madrid

Lagasca 99 is an innovative residential building that is already capturing the attention of the residents of the Salamanca neighbourhood, one of the most distinguished areas in Madrid, known for its history and architecture. Located at the gates of what is known as Madrid’s Golden Mile, this property is a benchmark in style and design thanks to the work of Rafael de la Hoz, an architect known for the outstanding livability and sustainability of his projects.

In what has turned into an exercise of imagination and pragmatism, Rafael de la Hoz and his team have managed to customise large spaces in which natural light is key, offering residents not only a comfortable environment, but also high energy efficiency thanks to the cutting-edge technology that is an intrinsic part of Lagasca 99.

Two tonne natural stone fins

There are numerous architectural elements that make Lagasca 99 a unique building. Without a doubt, the first thing that stands out is its futuristic façade: 330 colossal, solid pieces of natural stone – 273, 288 and 306.5 cm x 140 cm wide and 35 cm thick – whose individual weight is approximately 2,200 kg. Each of these vast pieces in the distinctive Travertino colour has been modelled to evoke the shape of a shark fin. The effect they produce from the outside is spectacular.

This new benchmark of Madrid’s architecture incorporates other unique elements in its exterior design, such as bevelled corners or homes of different heights and spaces that play with the relief of the façade.

Dekton and Silestone transform a residential unit into a home

Rafael de la Hoz has focused on making the interior of the residence as attractive as the façade, while also complying with the strictest standards in sustainability and energy efficiency. The insulation, installation and materials used have been essential when creating a comfortable and sustainable environment in which Dekton and Silestone have played a vital role.

For the main kitchens, the ultra-compact Dekton surface, has been used in the colour Keyla, an elegant and high-quality tone that is combined with the Silestone Blanco Zeus used for service kitchens.

The communal areas, such as the stairs, are also designed using Travertino Natural Stone.

``It is interesting to think that in order to build something that looks like it is from the 21st century within a historic neighbourhood of Madrid, we have to turn to classic stone``
