Design and functionality

Despite being a private residence, Skallan House resembles a museum of modern art. Its straight lines and large windows, together with the use of brutalist materials, make this house an example of monumental yet minimalist architecture.

The structure blends in perfectly with its surroundings, thanks in part to the Dekton colour ‘Kadum’, which has been used on the second floor of this ventilated façade: the Dekton cladding frames the large windows which look out onto the lake. The location of the house is unique not only because of its beauty, but also because of the wear and tear to which the exterior materials are subjected.

A non-porous material to stand-up to the challenges of the weather

Architect Håkan Widjedal, from Arkitektstudio Widjedal Racki AB, was looking for a façade material with a rusty look that would resist discolouration caused by UV rays. The material also needed to withstand the low temperatures of Sweden and the very high humidity from the nearby lake.

The solution was the use of Dekton, which provided both the desired colour and the required strength to withstand the Scandinavian weather conditions. As an ultra-compact surface, Dekton is a non-porous material that does not deteriorate over time or in unfavourable weather conditions.

This architectural project also aimed to be an example of sustainable construction, so it was essential that the material of choice should be environmentally friendly; Dekton, classified as a Carbon Neutral product, fulfils this requirement perfectly and puts the finishing touch to this project in which architecture, design and sustainability are in perfect harmony.

Exterior elegance, interior strength

TOPA Sukaldería is located in the heart of San Sebastián´s Gros district (Northern Spain), and occupies a total space of 496 m2, divided over two floors. The ground floor is occupied by the kitchen and the dining lounge, while the bathrooms are located in the basement. Clarity of space, contrasts, an upbeat, cosy environment, myriad ways of welcoming customers, high-quality decorative and architectural products, and the use of recycled materials are just some of the key concepts that define this project.

The ultra-compact surface Dekton, and the ecological Silestone Eco Line range were chosen for this design. More than 400 m2 of Cosentino products were used in this inspirational culinary project. The spectacular kitchen and dining lounge are located on the ground floor. In this large space, the emphasis is on the visual contrast between the natural, marbled finishes of the Dekton Kelya and Dekton Aura tones, and the wooden planks and metallic textures that permeate the entire room.

Resistance and hygiene for the most exposed surfaces

One of the priorities of this design was to harness the concept of an open kitchen, to allow customers and diners to see the chefs’ creative process first-hand. The Dekton Aura worktops and counters connect the kitchen with the rest of the room in an elegant harmony. Their wonderful pure white clarity, together with their distinctive veins, make them the room’s stand-out feature.

The safety and hygiene offered by Dekton when handling food, its high tolerance for both heat and cold without suffering aesthetic or structural changes, its high resistance to stains and scratching, and the availability of large format cut to size were determining factors in the choice of Dekton surfacing.

Furthermore, Dekton Aura was used as counter for the furniture located throughout the dining room, bringing greater visual harmony to the space as a whole.

Large format to minimize joints

The contrast between the stainless steel, which can be seen in abundance throughout the kitchen, and the deep, dark, matte finish colour of Dekton Kelya, is quite simply magnificent.

In addition to the beauty and outstanding technical benefits of Dekton, the option of installing large format slabs for the kitchen walls, with minimal visible joints, gives the space a greater sense of continuity and aesthetic elegance.

Environmentally friendly materials

For the sake of elegance and functionality, the Starlight colour from the Silestone Eco Line was used for the wall cladding in the bathrooms. This material was chosen in line with the use of recycled wood shavings for the ceilings and other cladding within the premises.

The emphatic black colour of Starlight provides the perfect contrast to the white of the bathroom elements and the grey shades of the flooring. The scintillating gleam of the mirror shards which are incorporated into slabs of Silestone® Eco Line balances the light and the darkness in the room, and creates an unexpectedly bewitching visual effect.

Long-lasting colour and maximum strength

During the renovation work, Dekton was used to clad the façade. Its limitless cutting possibilities, together with its availability in different thicknesses, simplified the project. In fact, the house owner was already familiar with Cosentino’s ultra-compact surface, having used it on previous projects; on this occasion, he again relied on Dekton not only to give his home a fresh new look, but also to make it resistant to unfavourable weather conditions and the wear and tear of time.

Specifically, Dekton in the colour Danae with a thickness of 8mm was used for this glued façade. Dekton’s high strength ensures that UV rays will not damage its colour consistency and that rain or dirt will not degrade the surface, as it is a non-porous material.

Dekton, a design material for façades

The New York district of Brooklyn has many iconic elements, from its famous bridge to its residential neighbourhoods with brick façade buildings and fire escapes. The O2 residential building stands out for its modern and striking façade made from Dekton in colours Irok and Keyla. A contrast that matches the soul of a unique neighbourhood.

The firm in charge of the project, International Stone Collections, required a façade material that was, above all, easy to maintain. Due to the exposure to external attack -whether natural, dirt or graffiti-, façades are one of the architectural elements that suffer the most and deteriorate over time. After considering different materials, International Stone Collection chose Dekton for its unique physical-mechanical properties.

A non-porous material designed to withstand

Dekton is a non-porous surface, which prevents dirt and graffiti from penetrating the surface, making it easy to maintain. In fact, Dekton is resistant to abrasion, UV rays and fire, so its use ensures a long-lasting façade that will maintain its colour consistency over time.

In order to facilitate the installation of the ventilated façade, the project managers required the packaging of each piece to be accurate. The Cosentino team not only supplied the material, but also provided support and acted as a partner to help the fitters work as efficiently as possible. The result is a distinctive façade that fits perfectly into the historical district of Brooklyn.

Opera and Domoos, durability for the Britannia dining area

The Britannia Hotel in Trondheim, Norway, first opened its doors in 1870. The Britannia, a landmark and historic site, has undergone numerous refurbishments over the years. The most recent took place in 2019, when it underwent a complete renovation involving the rooms and common areas, such as the Michelin-starred Speilsalen restaurant.

Seeking a balance between design and durability, the refurbishment team used Dekton in colours Opera and Domoos for those surfaces in constant use by chefs and customers, such as the restaurant countertop and bar, as well as tables and furniture in the buffet area.

Dekton makes the maintenance of the most used surfaces easy

Dekton Opera reflects the beauty and elegance of Italian Carrara marble; with its characteristic veining in grey tones, Opera adds distinction to the restaurant while offering great resistance to scratches, knocks and temperature contrasts typical in kitchens.

As for Dekton Domoos, it has been used to cover the buffet tables, a choice intended to give sobriety to the furniture, while combining with the light-coloured wood used for table frames.

Dekton is a non-porous surface, which allows for easy maintenance and cleaning, as abrasive substances do not affect its colour. It is ideal for adding a touch of style and colour to highly used surfaces.

UV-resistant material

The town of Vic, in the north of Spain and very close to the Pyrenees, experiences a temperature variation that results in freezing sub zero winter temperatures and scorching summers with overwhelming heat and humidity. Weather conditions are such that the materials exposed to the elements can easily be damaged, so the owners of this residential project decided to compliment a classic and functional exposed brick façade with Dekton.

The ultra-compact Dekton surface is specially designed for use on façades due to its high resistance to external factors: from UV rays that do not damage or alter the colour consistency, to its low water absorption as a non-porous material; as well as its resistance to knocks and scratches, Dekton offers high resistance and low maintenance.

Beautiful colour that does not fade outdoors

Dekton Blanc Concrete – a beige concrete with delicate grey veining reminiscent of the vulnerability and beauty of concrete – was used for this residential building in Vic. The resistance of Dekton allows the architect or designer to create outdoor surfaces with the full range of colours in the Dekton catalogue, ensuring that the sun’s rays, saltpetre or any other external element will not damage the colour.

Specifically, 12mm thick Dekton has been used for the finishes of the balconies and windows of this bonded façade, as well as for the walls of the penthouse that crowns the building. The cut-to-size slabs are particularly striking, as the horizontal lines have combined to create a harmony that complements the exposed brickwork very well.

Grand Paris Express

By 2021, the Paris metropolitan area will have almost 12.5 million inhabitants. It is by far the largest urban area in the European Union and is expected to continue to grow in the coming years. Whilst there are a number of urban challenges, inter-city transport around Paris is undoubtedly one of the most important.

In response to this growth, the French authorities have come up with an ambitious project, the Grand Paris Express (GPE), a public transport network consisting of 4 cutting-edge driverless metro lines. Over the next 15 years, a total of 200 km of new track between 64 stations will be built.

One of the key phases of a project of this scale is the construction of ‘pilot’ stations that will serve as a guide for the entire project. It was precisely in one of these stations, ‘La Fabrique du Metro’, where GPE managers turned to Dekton to test the possibilities of the material as well as the capacity of the Cosentino team to provide advice throughout the project.

“I believe this material will appeal to both users and station designers”
GPE Materials Manager: Didier BOURGEOIS

GPE Materials Manager: Didier BOURGEOIS

Ultra-compact surface to withstand heavy traffic

The stations of the Grand Paris Express will soon be used by tens of thousands of passengers every day. As a result, this type of public infrastructure is subject to very heavy wear for which not all floors are suitable. The ultra-compact Dekton material is specially designed for these challenges, as it is highly resistant to impact and scratches.

Furthermore, as a non-porous material, Dekton is easy to maintain, whether it is dirt and grime from daily traffic, or more aggressive stains such as graffiti. The Cosentino surface keeps its uniform colour even when exposed to abrasive elements that would damage other materials.

It is no wonder that these physical-mechanical properties, together with its limitless cutting possibilities, have captivated GPE’s managers. But there is more to it than that.

Dekton iD, a blank canvas

Grand Paris Express is set to be a unique infrastructure in the world, featuring innovations in many areas of engineering and civil transport: from its trains operated automatically by means of algorithms and AI, to the use of materials specifically designed for the project, such as the Dekton surface customised with the Dekton iD service.

Dekton iD is a blank canvas, a customisation service that allows the architect or designer to choose from the thickness of the material to its cut, texture, finish and colour. And colour was precisely the key element in the search for distinction: there is room for many styles and architectural elements in 64 metro stations, so it was essential to find a neutral colour with character that would not clash with the different environments; this is how ‘Paris’, the customised colour for the GPE, was born.

Sustainability is no longer optional

More than a trend, the use of sustainable materials has become a requirement for any public works project. That is why Dekton, a carbon neutral product made from 99% recycled water and 100% clean energy, was perfect for this project.

After the tests at ‘La Fabrique du Metro’, the Grand Paris Express team know that they can count on Dekton not only for flooring, but also for other applications such as stairs, wall cladding or even station façades, an application that has made Dekton a benchmark in the market.

They shape our sense of space, sustain and support – yet walls tend to remain largely ignored. But ‘The Wall’ is different: this system can be designed on an individual and flexible basis and offers more functions than a Swiss army knife. “We wanted to create a beautiful, multi-functional product that is at the same time extremely easy to install – like the Plug & Play feature of an iPhone,” says Johannes Falk, manager of Orea, the Zurich-based designer kitchen manufacturer which has created the innovative product. Indeed, Orea had to learn the same lesson as Steve Jobs: simple can be harder than complex. But all the effort has paid off. Shortly after its launch in 2019, ‘The Wall’ received the highest accolade at the Red Dot Award.

With a simple construction, clear language and versatile adjustment possibilities, the base is made of a lightweight yet torsion-resistant preformed aluminum frame system. Rails are then added with a fourphase power supply, and electrical accessories and lighting devices such as LED lamps can thus be positioned at any point of the wall. The wall surface can be fashioned from a variety of materials and, a recent addition, Dekton by Cosentino, an ultracompact surface available in more than 50 designs and in thicknesses of 4 to 12 mm that can also be used in large formats up to 3.2 m. “It’s a product that fires the imagination”, says Falk. “As with the iPhone, the simple individualization and diversity of the applications of ‘The Wall’ allow the concept of walls to grow exponentially.”

Right in the heart of Chicago, barely a ten-minute walk from City Hall, is 444 N Orleans, a recently refurbished building with a privileged location. The particularly striking 444 N Orleans is distinctive thanks to an impressive corner fully clad in Dekton, in large-format slabs with an innovative and daring design, in contrast with the classic brick which can be seen across most of the city. The snow and the humidity push the materials on external surfaces which are constantly exposed, particularly facades, to the limit. There are few materials that can resist it without losing their properties, including their color. It was in this context that the architects of 444 N Orleans came across Dekton, Cosentino’s ultracompact surface able to withstand major thermal variations, highly humid environments and high UV insulation.

To provide a cover for the corner of 444 N Orleans, an elegant color was sought that would directly bring to mind the city’s natural surroundings, on the shores of vast Lake Michigan, which is usually frozen over in winter. With its white tones and greyish veining, Aura 15 is evocative of the whimsical patterns and images which form on the lake during the harshness of winter. Stone System, a company with perfect knowledge of Cosentino’s materials, installed this facade. In order to achieve 444 N Orleans, it was decided that a ventilated facade would be used because, among other reasons, of the properties it offers to the building in terms of thermal and acoustic insulation.

The perfect symbiosis between kitchens

The Ti Trin Ned restaurant has become a reference in Danish gastronomy since 2001. Located in the old quarter of Fredericia, on the shores of the Baltic Sea, this restaurant takes its culinary offerings to an almost intimate level where diners and chefs share spaces. The experience had to flow, according to the concept of manager Mette Hvarre Gassner and chef Rainer Gassner, who have created a perfect symbiosis between a restaurant turned into an open kitchen and a ‘production’ kitchen. The result – one Michelin star.

To do this, it was necessary to merge two spaces with different characteristics and needs: on the one hand, priority was given to the aesthetic beauty of the surfaces, which had to complement the flavours of the menu; and on the other hand, it was essential to have a material that could be resistant to the thermal shocks, scratches and stains inherent in a busy kitchen. Dekton uniquely combines functionality and design, two features that make it truly attractive for professional kitchens all over the world.

“The resistance of Dekton represents exactly the attributes we are looking for, without compromising on aesthetics and design”
Rainer Gassner

Rainer Gassner

Domoos and Kreta for two working environments

During the development of the project it was important that the two spaces, i.e. the open kitchen and the ‘production’ kitchen, were interconnected yet physically separate. The solution was to use a combination of two textures: the dark, almost black texture of Dekton Domoos for the worktops and the wall cladding in the open kitchen, and the soft grey of Dekton Kreta, from the award-winning Industrial Collection by Cosentino, used in the ‘production’ kitchen.

It is in the latter where Dekton’s unique properties stand out. Its large format of 2700X1400 mm, which runs from floor to ceiling, provides a sense of continuity that also makes cleaning easier by reducing joints. Ti Trin Ned’s kitchen is one of the easiest to maintain in Denmark.

Eco-friendly aesthetics

Ti Trin Ned offers a type of cuisine that is deeply rooted in its natural environment, with ingredients firmly established in tradition and respect for nature. For Mette and Rainer Gassner to find a material that is as beautiful as it is sustainable was a matter of pure coherence. Dekton, as a carbon neutral product, meets this requirement perfectly.

“We are impressed by the features of Dekton and, at the same time, the concern for the environment and recycling that motivates Cosentino’s R&D. This is in line with our philosophy of respecting natural resources”.
