Plywood House
SMS Arquitectos
Palma de Mallorca, Spain
SMS Arquitectos has developed a structural system for prefabricating wooden elements by computer numerical control (CNC) to enlarge a house in Palma de Mallorca.

This house, located in a residential neighborhood of Palma de Mallorca, has been enlarged and renovated to adapt to the needs of new inhabitants. For the enlargement of the original dwelling at ground level, maintaining the structure of the original loadbearing walls, a light-structure solution was developed using wood. The use of different materials like mud and marés is explored, and pieces made by local artisans with varying degrees of industrialization are incorporated. The project establishes diverse ‘atmospheric zones’ within the house. Hence there  are rooms with diffused light, morning light, north views, south views. The architectural intention is to create an atmospheric spatial variation with seasonal use that only depends on momentary comfort. The few programs that have an express use in the house are the humid areas, around which the rest of the uses revolve.
