The shop “Busted” gets a new look

Busted is a fashion shop for young people located in the main shopping area of Silkeborg, in northern Denmark. The shop needed an update to attract a younger and more demanding clientele. During this refurb process, both the façade and the shop window played a key role in attracting customers to the shop.

Busted’s owners commissioned architect Morten Thomsen, founder of MMe Byg Aps, to undertake the renovation and interior design project. Thomsen invested time in researching different cladding solutions that could radically change the Busted façade. In his search, he had the good fortune to come across Cosentino’s Project Manager for the region, who introduced him to the Dekton brand and its countless benefits for façade applications.

Morten was impressed with the 8mm thick slabs, which allow for on-site handling and processing, as well as the use of an invisible adhesive for fixing.

You can’t go wrong with Dekton Danae

MMe Byg Aps studio wanted a colour that would appeal to Busted’s target customers: women with a youthful, casual style, and within a fairly broad age range. From the very beginning, Dekton Danae was a favourite finish because of its brightness and timeless character. Its availability in large format slabs- 320 x 144 cm – and in two textures – grip and matt – were two highly valued aspects in the final choice. After all, it is not for nothing that this is one of Cosentino’s best sellers.

The new Busted shop, which opened in spring 2021, now looks spectacular on one of Silkeborg’s most popular shopping streets. Long-time customers are delighted with the change and, more importantly, the new look is attracting a new clientele who had never thought of coming.

The renovation of the Busted shop is yet another example of the importance of design in public spaces in commercial terms. It also illustrates how quickly the investment is recouped when the project is well planned and you work with a partner like Cosentino.

A ‘facelift’ for Westfield Newmarket

Westfield Newmarket shopping centre in central Auckland, New Zealand, reopened in August 2019. After 18 months of construction work, this shopping centre, which dates back to the 1980s, reopened its doors with a new look, 230 shops and 2,800 parking spaces.

The project involved the renovation and extension of the existing building, doubling its previous size and quadrupling the number of shops. After many months of work and an investment of 790 million dollars, the updated Newmarket rises majestically between 277 and 309 Broadway Street.

It was clear to the team of architects from the Scentre Group, the project developer, that the façade would play a key role in the renovation process. In addition to becoming the most eye-catching design feature, it had to incorporate the latest technology in terms of energy efficiency. A ventilated façade therefore appeared to be the most suitable choice. And for this ventilated façade, there was no better partner than Dekton.

The installation was carried out by the Eurotherm Facades NZ team. Two anchoring systems were used in the process: the Etem Alum Systemand the Keil Anchor. The technical support from Cosentino’s headquarters in Spain was key to the successful execution, providing a prompt and professional advisory service whenever requested.

Sandy-coloured Dekton Danae

The new ventilated façade features 700m2 of 12mm Dekton Danae slabs. In addition to its clean, fresh look, Dekton Danae contrasts with the black window frames and the large glass surfaces.

Dekton Danae is a colour from the Natural collection that is reminiscent of the movement of sand. It is one of Cosentino’s best-sellers as it works perfectly in almost any space. Furthermore, being a neutral colour, it is full of nuances that ensure its versatility and say goodbye to boredom.

In the case of the Westfield Newmarket shopping centre, this effect of movement is the result not only of the richness of the material -Dekton Danae- but also of its clever cutting: all along the façade, in a continuous pattern, one larger row is placed every four rows of slabs.

This feat of design aims to bring the Newmarket in line with the district where it is located: a thriving and trendy shopping area with the best tapas bars, the most alternative art galleries and the most authentic Maori arts and crafts.

Dekton, insulation, aesthetics and durability for facades

The Zeeduin renovation project is situated on the corner of Franslaan with Lefebvrestraat in Nieuwpoort. After a few decades, the façades – covered with relatively thin prefab silex concrete elements – showed concrete damage due to carbonation. The client and architect opted for a total renovation for the façades, with 4 mm thick Dekton Slim plates by Cosentino, glued on a ventilated aluminium support structure.

The apartment building dates back to the 1970s and has 6 above-ground floors. The gallery terraces, made of in situ concrete with the floor slab running from the inside to the outside without thermal interruption, were fitted with a mortar-bed tiling. Water penetration caused concrete damage and general degradation of the concrete coating. The absence of façade and roof insulation also contributed to a total renovation.

Dekton Slim, 4mm full of possibilities

A light façade cladding had to give the building a new, sleek and contemporary zest. This resulted in the choice of Dekton Slim plates (with a thickness of 4 mm), glued to an aluminium carrier. “This way the façade could be insulated to a maximum without bringing the façade surface too far forward,” according to the architectural engineer Ignace Deconinck of the eponymous Architecten Expertisebureau from Veurne.

A small balcony construction with a walking zone was provided for the apartments on the façade corner – with in the original condition only a balustrade in the façade surface. Not evident from a technical point of view. Good coordination (including dimensions and planning) between the main contractor (Aquastra), the balustrades subcontractor (Aluform) and the façade cladding subcontractor (Murex Stone) was required. After concrete repair, the gallery terraces were fitted with a new reinforced terrace compaction system and glass balustrades with front mounting of the uprights.

Nayla, an off-white full of nuances

The architect opted for a dark-coloured base (the ground floor) and a light superstructure to give the floors a more floating effect. “For the ground floor, we opted for a coating in fired blue bluestone, a good match with the small grey speckles, the white mass of the Nayla type and the terrace floors in a grey tone,” says Deconinck about the choice for the Dekton colour “Nayla” (white speckled).

“Thanks to its properties, Dekton delivers high-quality, technical performance compared to other existing surfaces: highly scratch-resistant, frost-resistant and thaw-resistant, and resistant to salty air and UV rays. Colour stability, dimensional stability and pressure resistance are high. With a fire reaction class A2, s1-d0, Dekton can even be used for tall buildings,” says Stephanie Bevernagie of Cosentino.

The challenge of irregular shapes

CulinaryOn is an immersive cooking studio for team-building activities founded in Moscow and has branches in Poland, Romania, and now, Singapore. Completed in four months, CulinaryOn Singapore occupies a 4,000-square-meter, fan-shaped trapezoidal unit in Robertson Quay, Singapore.

The designers turned this challenging, irregular shape into an opportunity to present a dynamic configuration with moving benches and workstations that can be easily adjusted according to the users’ needs.

Design curves created to endure

The concept of CulinaryOn’s interior design likens culinary journey to a theatrical performance. Thus, the space is designed like a stage and Cosentino is featured front and centre in this culinary stage.

The space is divided into three studios, which are separated from one another by operable panels that can be folded away to merge the spaces as needed. Each studio is anchored by a U-shaped chef’s table with a cooking station at its centre, featuring sleek black Dekton Domoos and Dekton Sirius.

Several movable cooking stations are set around these chef’s table. Each station features cranberry red base paired with Dekton Korus worktop, presenting a smooth, solid grey surface with white veins perfect for culinary experiments.

A curvy bar unites the three studios. Clad in brushed copper and solid teal colour, the bar is finished with Silestone Desert Silver.

An immersive experience in every sense

Designed by Wilson Associates, Haidilao’s newest outlet at Marina Square mall presents an exceptionally futuristic dining experience with a personalised menu, immersive dining experience with sound and light projection, and robot servers, on top of its signature services.

The restaurant’s theatrical dining experience requires a sound design built with high quality, durable material, hence the designer’s choice to use Dekton and Silestone in its busiest areas. The interior design incorporates no less than 180 slabs of Dekton Soke and 10 slabs of Silestone Desert Silver, with a total of 806 sqm and 50 sqm of surfaces, respectively.

A beauty salon that earns its name

A great dining experience is an alchemy of great food, great service and great ambience. In the age of information and disruption, customers are spoilt for choice. F&B establishments need to constantly reinvent their offerings – menu, interior design, dining promotions – to keep diners coming back for more. They need to sustain diners’ interest with fresh experiences that cannot be found elsewhere.

Haidilao understands this. Going above and beyond impeccable customer service, the restaurant chain’s answer to providing and unforgettable dining experience includes services like manicure in a beauty room while diners wait for their tables. Silestone Desert Silver is chosen for the vanity tops in the beauty room for its modern look and durability.

A fresh new look for a classic style establishment

The patisserie Glea, run by the young chef Abel Bravo and located in the historic centre of Murcia, first opened its doors in November 2020. It is housed in a traditional establishment, at number 4 Barrionuevo Street, and sells innovative and distinctive sweet treats, with a focus on fresh ingredients.

Although the establishment is housed in a classic style building, its renovation conveys innovation and modernity, in line with the values of the new patisserie. For this, interior designer Alexia Martínez, together with architect Pedro Francisco, has relied on Dekton for the renovation process.

For the flooring, the chosen material was Dekton Kreta, from the Industrial collection. Inspired by polished concrete, Dekton Kreta evokes a seamless effect, making it perfect for use as a base colour to be combined with bold finishes. For the tables, the interior designer has opted for Dekton Kelya, a material inspired by dark marble which features light veins and creates a very unique atmosphere.

Impressive display counter in Dekton Bergen

The focal point of this establishment is undoubtedly its large display counter designed as if it were a monolithic totem. This starring effect is achieved in two ways: firstly, by placing the finest sweets in Murcia within easy reach; secondly, by choosing a material with a strong visual presence and character such as Dekton Bergen.

Dekton Bergen is part of the Dekton Stonika collection. Inspired by natural Portobello stone, it is reminiscent of Greek sculptures, with marked greyish veins on an off-white base. When used on the display counter, it greatly enhances the presentation of products, elevating the sweets to the status of almost divine delicacies.

Interestingly, the name of the patisserie, Glea, means “land” in Murcian Spanish, an allusion to the importance of using local ingredients and products. This philosophy fits perfectly with that of Dekton by Cosentino, committed to sustainability and certified as a carbon neutral product for its entire life cycle.

A buffet counter to tempt the appetite as well as the eye

The Ritz-Carlton Abama is a five-star resort in Tenerife, the island of eternal spring. It is the perfect place to rest and relax while enjoying excellent guest service, in line with the philosophy of The Ritz-Carlton chain. With this purpose in mind, the renovation of one of its restaurants, “La Veranda”, was carried out in 2019.

The hotel has an extensive gastronomic offer with eight different restaurants, some of which have been awarded several Michelin stars. “La Veranda” is dedicated to breakfast and pop-up proposals. Therefore, this restaurant is equipped with large buffet counters where the food is beautifully presented and live cooking is performed.

During the modernisation project of the restaurant, led by Gregory de Clerck, all worktops were replaced with a single material: Dekton Olimpo. The result is a clear, relaxed and elegant atmosphere, in contrast to the warmth of the wood used in the dining area. Dekton Olimpo is a material from the Stonika collection inspired by Carrara marble. Its white colour with grey veins adds character and enhances the look of the restaurant.

The resistance of Dekton in cooking areas

Dekton can withstand the most extreme temperatures, such as hot cookware just taken off the hob. Furthermore, Cosentino’s ultra-compact surface offers high resistance to scratches and aggressive chemicals, as well as almost zero porosity. Dekton worktops, with a 25-year warranty, were the best technical solution for the renovation of the buffet area.

From an aesthetic point of view, Dekton also had many advantages. The large format slabs (320 cm x 144 cm) create continuous, seamless surfaces that are more beautiful and easier to keep clean. These extra large slabs are ideal for worktops as big as those of “La Veranda”. Furthermore, the variety of thicknesses available (from 3 cm to 0.4 cm) multiplies the design possibilities allowing, for example, the same material to be used for worktops and kitchen cabinet doors.

The result is a sublime finish, beautiful and functional at the same time, ideal for surprising guests and making breakfast a first class experience.

Dekton, design with large format

Pilsa Educa is a hospitality school, located in Armilla (Granada) for professional and amateur chefs, in which excellence, innovation and leadership are the main ingredients.

The interior design work carried out in this school is inspired by an industrial unit where the original metal structure and brick walls are visible within the old building. The factory-style decor is interposed by various elements that bring us closer to the eternal beauty of nature and also visually differentiate the different spaces.

The Pilsa Hostelería Técnica design team wanted, from the very beginning, to expand the industrial aspect of the walls and metal structures to the floors and other elements such as worktops or work tables in the classrooms. After looking into several possibilities, the ultra-compact Dekton surface offered such a wide range of colours and sizes to suit any design.

Pilsa Educa - H Pilsa Educa Aula countertop cladding 356

A sustainable surface made to last

The Trilium colour, which is part of the Dekton Industrial Collection, was the perfect colour to meet the initial aesthetic requirements thanks to its unique oxidised metal appearance. The chiaroscuro contrast of this surface and its smooth texture give it an unparalleled industrial appearance. Another stand-out feature is that it’s environmentally sustainable: Trilium is manufactured with up to 80% recycled materials from the Dekton production process itself.

Dekton Trilium covers classroom floors and, as if it were one whole flowing piece of material, it runs along the work tables and worktops, where cooking classes are taught or culinary activities and events are held. In total, 260m2 of Dekton® Trilium has been applied to flooring, vertical cladding and worktops.

Due to the vast amount of activities that take place in the building every day, the Pilsa Educa cooking school needs materials that, in addition to being beautiful, are hard-wearing and functional in order to guarantee their durability over time. Dekton’s resistance to heat, cold, heavy-duty use, scratches and stains make it the perfect choice. Cosentino’s ultra-compact surface also allows food to be prepared and handled directly on the surface without any fear of breakage or burning, and ensuring maximum hygiene and safety.

Endless possibilities for creating unique spaces

A natural look has been chosen by the Pilsa Hostelería Técnica team for the reception area in order to differentiate it aesthetically from the classrooms and working areas.

A large wall of grass welcomes you. Its intense green colour contrasts with the natural white mantle offered by the Dekton surface, in its Aura shade, which extends across the floor and the reception desk. The attractive Aura shade, from the Dekton Natural Collection, is simply incredible. The white background is enhanced by the pattern of clear and elegant grey veins that evoke natural rock formations.

A total of 75m2 of Dekton Aura has been applied to the floor, reception counter, bar and worktop.

A 25 million renovation that combines aesthetics and functionality

At the end of 2019, the time had finally come: After a three-year construction period, the Kreissparkasse Rottweil proudly opened its newly renovated headquarters. Customers are now welcomed in an innovative building with an open atmosphere, which meets the highest standards of modern advisory and service quality. Around 25 million euros were invested to renovate and expand the existing building dating from 1972. Ergonomically functional designer furniture now characterises the modern interior design. The stairs, the floors in heavily used areas and the walls of the sanitary rooms are covered with Dekton tiles from Cosentino.

Our new head office is the heart, the core of Kreissparkasse Rottweil, says Roland Eckhardt, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management of the district savings bank of Rottweil. Currently, around 150 employees from various departments work together under one roof. The innovative Open Space concept can be used very flexibly and has the potential to accommodate significantly more employees or departments in the head office. Starting from the customer hall, the building, which has been expanded to a gross floor area of 9,900 sqm, was planned from the inside out in order to provide the best possible support for the bank’s processes. Externally, a red-brown ceramic façade unites the old and new parts of the building; inside, it is the continuous floor covering.

Large-format tiles

Customers enter the building via wide steps on Königstraße, the main street. “Originally we had suggested natural stone floors here,” explains Stefan Popp from the architectural office Broghammer Jana Wohlleber. “But the client was critical in view of the strains. In addition, the flooring was to be as extensive as possible, with only few joints. When we then saw the large-format samples for the KAP WEST in Munich exhibited by our facade builder App, we had an alternative: Dekton.” The ultra-compact surface material consists only of inorganic natural minerals and is very durable and robust.

“The large formats, the robustness and the design of the material were decisive”, says Popp. “What we also liked about using it as stair cladding: Dekton is solid-coloured, so that the bevelled edges have the same colour as the surface.” Dekton Keon from the Tech Collection was chosen, which has a very modern and high-quality appearance with its light, concrete-like gloss. In addition to the stairs, the customer hall, public corridors, tea kitchens and canteen as well as the sanitary rooms were also fitted with Dekton tiles – a total of 1,700 square metres.

Carefully levelled

“To lay large-format tiles accurately, the floors have to be prepared very precisely”, explains Erik März, site manager at tiler Fliesen Kugel. “Once the underground is completely level, the tiles are laid using the buttering-floating method.” The ground and the tile are coated with a thin layer of mortar. Then the surface material is set with the aid of levelling systems. Lugs protruding from their plastic plates ensure an optimal distance between the tiles and, with the help of a wedge or pulling hood, allow for the precise levelling of two adjacent tile plates.

Once the mortar has hardened, the lugs are removed and the gaps between the tiles are grouted. On the floors, tiles of 1.40 m width were laid – 12 mm thick on the floor surface, 20 mm thick on the steps. On the entrance stairs of 6 m width, tiles of up to 2.60 m length were used, slightly offset so that the joints are hardly visible. Further stairways with 1.40 m wide steps were covered with continuous tiles. The wall panels in the sanitary areas with a width of 0.70 m were finished in 8 mm thickness. All tiles came from one batch and were called off in stages, ready cut to size.

Sustainably beautiful

“The size and weight of the panels do not necessarily make the work easy,” says März, who, with his team on site, laid the large-format Dekton panels, which weigh around 30 kg per square metre, by hand. “But the processing – for example in the sanitary area – is easy with the right tools and the result is really impressive. Thomas Santo, Head of Construction Organisation at the Kreissparkasse Rottweil also agrees with this. “The efforts of all involved have been worthwhile. We now have a sustainably beautiful floor covering that guides our customers through the building. We are really very satisfied with the result”.

Innovation begins with the surfaces

ONCE Group Spain have commissioned Domus Arquitectos studio to modernise an old industrial building in Camino de Hormigueras, Madrid. The aim of restoring the building is to house the logistics centre of the ONCE printing plant, a cutting-edge robotic plant.

Technology and innovation are the guiding elements of the project. With these two ideas in mind, and without forgetting the visual and functional aspects, the studio has chosen Dekton as the leading material for the different spaces.

Customised cuts to ensure visual continuity

The first visual impact is provided by the building’s reception. The combination of Dekton Kelva dark stone, together with the steel and the programmable lighting, creates an overwhelming effect. This effect is intensified by cutting Dekton in large-format, which allows for visual continuity.

The reception desk, made of the same material, becomes a “sculpture”. Designed and manufactured by hand, and fully cladded in Dekton, it required precise laser cutting and error-free handling. The result is a monolithic block reminiscent of materials taken from quarries in one piece.

Dekton is also used for flooring in common areas and bathrooms, in 3.2 x 1.4 metre slabs, achieving a striking effect.

Industrial functionality embracing design

The project consisted of the restoration of an old industrial building to be used for three purposes: the ONCE logistics unit, the administrative control centre for this unit, and a small auditorium for events.

In industrial buildings, design and materials are often neglected for the sake of practical production. However, Domus Arquitectos, in collaboration with the project’s construction company, Ferrovial, has gone for a very advanced design in accordance with the machinery to be incorporated in the plant, and for the use of materials with a technological finish. Dekton thus presents itself as a resistant, versatile and design solution for use in industrial environments.
