House in the Hills
Sean Godsell Architects
Barrabool, Australia
In Barrabool, Australia, the firm Sean Godsell Architects has tucked a house beneath a 900 m2 roof, protecting it against both the intense heat waves and the cold south winds that strike the region.

The house is located amid hills and incredible views. The cold southerly winds of the zone were the main factor to take into account in designing it. Dotted all over the Australian countryside are small haysheds. Supported by metal frames and covered on top but open on the sides, these shelters were a major inspiration for the architect.

The large, 900 m2 roof performs several functions: it provides protection against wind, deflecting it, while simultaneously giving shade and direct natural light, depending on the time of day and year. But it also serves as a refuge between the surrounding nature and the house’s interior. It is space where one already feels protected.

The layout puts the living room and courtyard on the north side so that they get all the possible heat and sunlight. Further protection is given by the rehaped landscape to the south, and also by the operable roof.
