The highly successful project carried out a few years ago by the Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron at 1111 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach has now been renovated and expanded, with a new building for retail and apartments.

Facing Lenox Avenue, this additional construction had two seemingly contradictory objectives to meet: it had to have a strong identity in order to attract pedestrians from Lincoln Road, but without competing with the architecture of the 1111 parking garage. The result is a white box with an all-glass storefront protected against hurricane winds by four 10-meter-tall operable steel ‘gates’ that create a strong presence for the building. Upstairs are two courtyard residences.

The project included transforming one office level into parking and a restaurant, giving the office building a new entrance lobby, and updating the penthouse on top of the parking garage.
