An industrial and Scandinavian look

Denmark’s largest chain of medical aesthetic and plastic surgery clinics, CeriX, wanted to renovate the reception area of its Frederiksberg headquarters and give it a distinctly clean, Scandinavian, elegant and highly functional style.

“We liked the idea of having a reception counter with the look of concrete and found in Dekton Kreta the perfect partner as it is maintenance free, easy to clean and resistant to acids, stains and scratches”, says Rie Jensen, owner of CeriX.

Inspired by classic cement floors, the matt grey finish of Dekton Kreta blends perfectly with the Nordic style and its characteristic colour palette. Additionally, the Dekton Slim version, only 4 mm thick, is perfect for covering furniture, cupboard doors, shelves or walls.

In expert hands

“Thanks to the expertise of Pilehave Natursten and the ease of working with this material, we were able to take care of every last detail”, says Ida Jensen, co-designer of this beautiful application that combines and contrasts with the other interior elements in Dekton Laos, such as the coffee tables and auxiliary pieces of furniture. They all meet the same high standards of cleanliness and durability required in the day to day running of a clinic.

A customised design rich in textures

Located in the so-called Art Triangle, opposite the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Queen Sofia National Museum Art Centre), the hotel’s design unsurprisingly pays homage to Madrid’s most popular and musical side. Vibrant colours and a modern concept run throughout the rooms, suites and common areas, where different shades of Dekton and Silestone have been used for wall claddings, fittings and furnishings.

“We were surprised by the versatility of the materials and finishes, so we also used them for furniture, fittings and different equipment in a wide variety of thicknesses”, says Rockwell Group, the architecture studio responsible for the design of the new Hard Rock Hotel in Madrid.

An example of many applications

“We worked with Cosentino to create customised solutions for the interior spaces of the Hard Rock Hotel Madrid, such as anti-slip finishes, large format tiles, cement look for the outdoor spaces and a unique, customised, terrazzo-look finish for the room showers and some of the furniture, which is a main feature of the design”, say the architects. Specifically, Silestone was used for the cladding of bathrooms, worktops and table tops in the suites and for the bar worktops and table tops in the common areas. As for Dekton, it was used to clad the countertops of the bathrooms on the main floor, as well as for the flooring, steps and the swimming pool.”

Quality solutions

The chemistry between the studio and Cosentino was immediate and allowed Rockwell Group to meet the schedule and expectations of the customer, ASG Iberia. “Cosentino’s technical team was a constant source of support, as they studied the project from the beginning. They provided solutions in terms of quality and design”, explains the studio. Everything was taken care of in detail, creating personalised spaces that give the hotel its own identity, “such as the custom tile finish in the rooms that offered a durable solution with a beautiful design”, they say.

A new brand image

Waynes is a well-known Swedish coffee chain that the last years are expanding heavily globally and locally. To be noticed in an already saturated market it was important to revise its old identity and to communicate its Swedish roots and strengthen its brand identity. The new concept aims to create a home for the Scandinavian” Fika” culture and to express the joy of the tradition of slowing down over a coffee and a cake.

The company entered 2020 with a brand-new look that makes the Swedish origin clearer and distinguishes themselves from the competitors. The renewal includes the interior design as well as the graphic identity. The dark murky colours are replaced by lighter Scandinavian shades and natural materials such as wood and leather.

With the choice of a contemporary, fresh, and brighter “Scandinavian Blue” the new concept embraces the brand color and makes it the star again. For the international market, it was important to create an identity that emphasizes the Swedish heritage and to create a warm and inviting space for the many occasions.

In the café, the blue brand color has that strong presence, contrasted with tactile materials like tiles, linen wallpaper and blonde wood, and green plants. ‘Since the concept was created for a worldwide roll out it was important to create a toolbox of furniture modules that are scalable and flexible to fit into a wide range of spaces,’ explain the studios of Cilla’s and Peter’s.

An experience beyond coffee

Since the Swedish chain tapped Studio Cilla and Studio Peter Lundbergh, to create a new interior concept that celebrates Sweden’s “fika” culture, this project has been submitted for #FrameAwards2021 in the category of #Restaurant

With new solutions and sections, the new concept features many smart solutions that make it easier for those who want to eat or have a coffee sitting down as well as for those who buy take-away. There will be a clearer distinction between the comfortable seating area and the deli section near the entrance where the guests easily can make a purchase from the broad assortment of prepacked food as well as i.e., cinnamon buns from the in-store bakery.

“Another aspect also when selecting the Silestone is the positive side of that the material comes in different thicknesses. To be able to choose the thinner boards for certain areas make it easier for production and save both on the material and weight for transport which is important since the project is planned to go worldwide.”

Style that stands up to everyday use

Project Manager Francisco Muñoz from Cosentino Scandinavia was responsible for Silestone in this project and describes some of the advantages and requirements; “Since Silestone by Cosentino possesses the ideal characteristics for countertops as well as tops for the hospitality market the material was chosen.

With a low absorption level and high scratch resistance the surface will remain unchanged after its daily use. As the hospitality market is exposed to more extreme wear, Silestone is perfectly suited for its purpose.

The tabletops are pre-drilled according to drawing with inserts installed from the factory, which facilitates the assembly of these on site.

A refurbishment with a focus on tradition

The recovery and enhancement of historical heritage has become a concern not only for local authorities, but also for a growing number of companies who see their former workplaces, such as factories and offices, as an opportunity for new business propositions and unique meeting places for their public. Cruzcampo, one of Spain’s best-known beer brands, has understood this and has just remodelled its historic brewery in Seville to create a unique space: the Factoría.

What used to be an industrial production line has been turned into a catering school to train the culinary talents of the future, who will be able to demonstrate their newly acquired skills in the restaurant that completes a benchmark leisure and training proposal in Spain.

The key to this refurbishment project was to make the most of the large spaces of the old factory and let the light bathe a decoration that mixes the industrial and the urban. This is where Cosentino has added its design touch to the light tones with clean, welcoming lines.

Dekton Aura and Zenith illuminate the new facilities

High ceilings, exposed brick walls and large windows to let in all the light of southern Spain are some of the features of the Factoría’s interior design, which seeks to recreate open spaces where leisure and work embrace each other in an organic way. It was important to give a sense of cleanliness and clarity, so the project managers opted for the colours Aura and Zenith by Dekton, two very bright and versatile shades that can be used in both work and leisure spaces.

In this case, Dekton has been used for all the worktops – three professional kitchens of more than 35 metres, four work tables and the main bar island. As an ultra-compact surface, Dekton offers high scratch and stain resistance, two attributes that make it a valuable surface for hospitality projects.

The Factoría’s new catering school will welcome hundreds of students into its kitchens over the next few years; the choice of Dekton as the reference material guarantees that neither the temperature contrasts typical of a kitchen nor the daily wear and tear will affect the technical properties and colour of the surfaces. This new Factoría has a long life ahead of it.

A stain-proof surface

The revolutionary ultra-compact surface, Dekton by Cosentino has once again proven to be the surface of choice for professional chefs, with its recent specification by internationally acclaimed Michelin star chef, John Campbell for his restaurant and cookery school, The Woodspeen.

Situated in the beautiful West Berkshire countryside near Newbury, The Woodspeen Restaurant was built on the plot of a once thriving local pub that had been left in a state of disrepair. Over a 12 month build period, the new building came to life, keeping the shell of the original pub but adding a large extension to the rear to create a bright, airy restaurant with fantastic views of the rolling countryside.

During the original renovation, Dekton in the colour Danae had previously been chosen for the restaurant’s open pass, designed to add a touch of theatre to guests who are able to see the inner workings of the kitchen from the restaurant. Campbell wanted to steer away from the austere nature of standard stainless steel tops often found in professional kitchens to create a link between the kitchen and onlooking diners, and so Dekton offered both a beautiful and practical design solution for the pass. As Campbell explains, “Pans, plates and extremely hot utensils are used on the pass each and every day so it’s important that the surface is able to cope with the heat, which Dekton does brilliantly.”

A material resistant to the rhythm of the restaurant

This initial introduction to the ultra-compact surface led Campbell to specify it once again when embarking on the recent refurbishment of The Woodspeen Cookery School, citing how impressed he was with the surface’s durability as one of the core reasons. “The top in the restaurant is over three and half years old, but still looks just as good as when it was put in – hence why Dekton was the obvious choice in the Cookery School. It looks good, it feels good, but importantly it gives us all the benefits required.”

Located just yards away from the main restaurant, the Cookery School is open to both professional chefs for intense training days and enthusiastic home cooks enjoying the various different courses on offer. Campbell wanted the space’s new design to bridge the gap between a commercial and domestic kitchen, ensuring that all students felt at home in the space, however it was also key that the material specified for the tops would be robust enough to cope with intense daily use. Having already seen Dekton’s high resistance to heat, scratches and stains in action on the restaurant’s pass, Campbell was assured it would be more than up to the job, whilst offering additional benefits for the particular skills taught in the school. “Perfect for the Cookery School, Dekton remains the same temperature as the room, unlike marble and granite surfaces which can be at a much lower temperature to their environment. When we are teaching students to make bread for example, we can turn out the dough straight onto the surface as it’s very tactile, smooth and a pleasure to work on.”

Dekton Trilium, industrial style for everyday life

Previously used in the restaurant pass, Dekton Danae was selected again for two worktops in the cookery school, creating contrast and giving the centre of the space a feeling of spaciousness due to its lighter hue.

Selected for the remaining worktops and splashbacks in the Cookery School, the award-winning Dekton Trilium, part of the Industrial Collection, immediately stood out as the obvious choice for Campbell. “Trilium, wow, amazing. What the whole restaurant and the cookery school is all about is natural woods, materials, coppers, bronzes and brick so this design really complements the dark colours and metallic elements and was the obvious choice here. For me, the Dekton tops really create the visual wow factor in this kitchen.”

Taking care of every last detail from the plate to the table

Food as a language of love. This is how renowned chef Aitor Jerónimo Orive sums up his passion for gastronomy, heritage of his homeland, the Basque Country, a region in northern Spain. “My grandparents are wonderful cooks and I always caught them in the kitchen, stirring a pot of hot, hearty and incredibly delicious food”, Aitor recalls. For Aitor, the logical step was to become a chef and open his own culinary space. So far, nothing unusual. Except that he opened his restaurant in Singapore, more than 11,000 kilometres away from home. It was there that he opened the Basque Kitchen, a Michelin-starred restaurant where Basque cuisine has become part of international cultural heritage.

Now, after several years of hard work that have earned him the appreciation of the general public, the Basque Kitchen by Aitor moves to the historic building The Fullerton Waterboat House, and does so under the guidance of the design studio Grey Matters, featuring Dekton as the reference material. “Moving from Amoy Street to its new location was a bold move that required careful planning. Redefining a brand that has such history and so much prestige is a task that must be handled with delicacy, sensitivity and the utmost care so as not to undermine all the hard work that the Chef and his team have put in over the last few years”, explains the studio.

Dekton Keyla and Silestone Eternal D’or

The design was to be minimal, bespoke and ultra luxurious. The choice of Cosentino’s surfaces, Dekton Kelya and Silestone Eternal D’Or, for the bar and cabinets was a logical step that improved both the performance of the space and the visual quality of the design. The result is a well-balanced palette of materials that creates a luxurious setting with high performance kitchen and bar areas that allow the Chef and his team to shine.

Beyond their design and finishes, both Dekton and Silestone provide highly resistant and easy to maintain surfaces that are perfect for kitchens, whether at home or in Michelin-starred restaurants, where the pace of work is hectic and each space must be planned to the millimetre.

One of the largest hotels in Finland

The former Finnish State Railways VR headquarters building, originally designed by Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1909, has been transformed into a Scandic Hotel. The building is strongly tied to Helsinki’s railway station, an important part of the cityscape as well as culturally and historically significant, as it served as the railway administration headquarters for almost a century. The design work on the hotel was exceptionally demanding. The building is protected under the Act on the Protection of the Built Heritage.

Representing Eliel Saarinen’s Art Nouveau style, the former Finnish State Railways VR headquarters building was renovated and expanded into an elegant hotel with almost 500 rooms as well as meeting and event facilities. The cultural and historical landmark’s demanding renovation and change of use was carried out in cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency and the city of Helsinki.

The renovation was an exceptionally demanding project. Protected parts of the building include its entire exterior and roofing, as well as its main lobby, main staircase and hallways, the longest of which is 159 metres long.

Silestone, between the elegance and the versatility

The building’s extension was built according to the design proposition from the architectural office Futudesign, which won an architecture contest for this project in 2017. The new extension completes the elegant hotel complex, which also includes a beautiful courtyard and an outdoor terrace for the restaurant.

A first-class classic meeting place in the heart of the city, the hotel’s Bar G provides a colourful and cosy oasis for relaxing. Customers can enjoy refreshing drinks and stylish cocktails from the bar’s elegant Silestone Eternal Marquina countertops.

The stylish restaurant inspired by classic European cuisine features stunning matte black Silestone Eternal Marquina kitchen worktops. These Silestone worktops offer an excellent combination of elegance, quality and resistance.

This year, they have also contributed to the renovation of the kitchen of the ‘Refuge’ in Écully, located 10 kilometres from Lyon and very close to the Paul Bocuse Institute, where chef Davy Tissot’s team prepares for the competition.

Two Dekton colours of great beauty were used in the kitchen renovation: Kovic for the wall cladding and Laurent for the worktop. In choosing Dekton, cleanliness, functionality and excellent performance at high temperatures were paramount. The result is a kitchen that is modern and perfectly equipped, yet elegant and timeless at the same time.

Dekton Laurent is inspired by the natural stone of Port Laurent and features an almost dramatic finish with brown and golden veining. A very theatrical context for presenting the work to be judged by the best jury.

‘A good chef has to be well equipped to be able to make beautiful things. The benefits of Dekton in terms of hygiene are beyond reproach, combined with its elegance and visual beauty.’

Bocuse d’Or, the haute cuisine competition

The Bocuse d’Or is an international culinary competition created in 1987 by the renowned French chef Paul Bocuse, who passed away in 2018. The competition brings together 24 chefs from 24 countries every two years with several qualifying rounds and an enthusiastic audience. In five hours and thirty-five minutes each team must prepare two dishes. A jury of the world’s top chefs will deliberate on the winning team. This year, the finals will take place on September 26th-27th in Lyon.

Team France is led by chef Davy Tissot. The nomination of this Meilleur Ouvrier de France and chef-trainer of the starred Restaurant Saisons in Écully for the Bocuse d’Or Team France is based on technical mastery, hard work and creativity.

Over the last three years, Cosentino has been committed to work well done and the creativity of Team France and has been supporting them at the Bocuse D’Or. The redesign of their kitchen using Dekton as a technologically sophisticated and beautiful material is a good proof of this partnership, which is destined to last for a long time.

Nature as a starting point

Drita means light in Albanian. But a very special light, like the one reflected by the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea and the creamy colour of Albania’s sandy beaches. Drita Kafè is a small café which recreates an atmosphere of idyllic nature and endless summer in Piana degli Albanesi, a small mountain village embedded in Sicily and founded over five centuries ago by Albanians.

History, tradition and modernity come together in this café to offer the typical Sicilian ‘cannoli’, as well as a variety of local pastries and cigars. At Drita Kafè everything is designed to please the senses. And here, the Dekton surface, in its striking Entzo colour, plays a perfect role.

How to expand the possibilities of a reduced space

Dekton Entzo recreates a Calacatta marble that captures the warmth of light; its steamy golden shiny veins give it a unique personality that enriches any interior space. The designer and engineer Giusy Scalia has cleverly used this feature to illuminate and enlarge the small, narrow premises.

The 0.8cm thick Dekton Entzo surface has been used to clad the walls of the table area, continuing down to the floor to give a sense of uniformity that creates two different spaces in this café; a radiant and welcoming space, to enjoy the pastries, and another more intimate one, the service area, where the wood tones have been combined in different intensities.

The ensemble is completed by the tables and bars, also in Dekton Entzo – 2.0cm and 1.2cm thick respectively – which, in addition to offering a very attractive design, provide the owners of the Drita Kafè with non-porous surfaces that are easy to clean and highly resistant to scratches and wear and tear of time, like the spirit and tenacity of the Albanians who founded Piana degli Albanesi.

The challenge of irregular shapes

CulinaryOn is an immersive cooking studio for team-building activities founded in Moscow and has branches in Poland, Romania, and now, Singapore. Completed in four months, CulinaryOn Singapore occupies a 4,000-square-meter, fan-shaped trapezoidal unit in Robertson Quay, Singapore.

The designers turned this challenging, irregular shape into an opportunity to present a dynamic configuration with moving benches and workstations that can be easily adjusted according to the users’ needs.

Design curves created to endure

The concept of CulinaryOn’s interior design likens culinary journey to a theatrical performance. Thus, the space is designed like a stage and Cosentino is featured front and centre in this culinary stage.

The space is divided into three studios, which are separated from one another by operable panels that can be folded away to merge the spaces as needed. Each studio is anchored by a U-shaped chef’s table with a cooking station at its centre, featuring sleek black Dekton Domoos and Dekton Sirius.

Several movable cooking stations are set around these chef’s table. Each station features cranberry red base paired with Dekton Korus worktop, presenting a smooth, solid grey surface with white veins perfect for culinary experiments.

A curvy bar unites the three studios. Clad in brushed copper and solid teal colour, the bar is finished with Silestone Desert Silver.
