The third life of a historic hotel in Turku

The most famous and iconic hotel in Turku, Finland, has been built from scratch after dismantling the old building from the 1970s. This large scale project, managed by YIT construction company and designed by Schauman Architects, has resulted in a new, more energy efficient building equipped with modern technologies. But not all is gone. The new Scandic Hamburger Börs hotel retains the essence of the original building in its design. The oldest part of the hotel, protected by Finnish heritage legislation, has been restored, and the new building, built over the extension carried out in the 1970s, maintains a historical dialogue with it.

The hotel’s origins date back to 1894, when the Hamburger Bierhalle restaurant opened its doors. Back then the site was occupied by a two storey stone building dating from the 1830s. Later at the turn of the century it was renovated in an Art Nouveau style that still remains today. Known for her charisma and leadership, hotel founder Wallina Valtin bought the restaurant in 1898, while the hotel began operating in 1904. Valtin sold the Hamburger Börs hotel to the Turku Cooperative Society, who were in charge of the extension project carried out in the 1970s and which gave the hotel a second life. Modernisation of the building began in the late 2010s. At that time, the owner was the insurance company LocalTapiola. However, now it has been acquired by the Scandic hotel chain, which is giving this architectural icon a third life.

A project with a soul

The new building has been designed by Schauman Architects and preserves elements from the early 20th century. Its Más restaurant, located on the ground floor, is accessed through a reception area, a lounge and a spacious foyer. The heated winter garden by the restaurant and the open air terrace next to the rooftop bar complete the common areas. The hotel has 272 rooms and suites in total.

According to Janne Halin of the architecture studio, the project involved a dialogue between several different styles and the main challenge was to adapt the new building to its surrounding architecture. Combining the old with the contemporary while paying homage to the past has been the great challenge of the project.

Quality materials

Among the materials used in the renovation project, the architecture studio chose Silestone for the worktops and tables in the restaurant and the rooms. Eternal Marquina was the colour chosen for the bar counter, a colour that evokes the Nero Marquina marble, bringing elegance and depth to the space and rounding off the Spanish inspired design of this common area of the hotel. The tables in Eternal Noir, another dramatic shade, complete the atmosphere. Silestone surfaces are highly resistant to stains, scratches and are easy to maintain, which makes them the ideal material for spaces like this.

Charming rooms

The hotel’s cosy rooms feature an elegant interior design. From the luxurious suite with beautiful arched windows to the standard rooms, they all offer an atmosphere in which the hotel’s history and contemporary comforts come together. “The interior design of the rooms features a neo-Scandinavian style that uses warmer colours to create a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, replacing traditional styles based on light and simple colours”, says interior architect Jaakko Puro.

To design a space fit for creative people, the building’s two lower levels were fused by means of a central courtyard up which a sculptural staircase rises, contrasting with the original one of raw concrete and the soft textures of the furniture pieces. The ground floor is bathed in natural light, but the only light reaching the basement it seeping in through the patio and the ceiling.

For the revamp of the attic, again the solution was to connect levels through stairs. The lower story of the dwelling contains daytime-use spaces: kitchen, living room, dining room, and a small study that can double as a second bedroom. Upstairs, furniture and finishes with a touch of posh accompany picture windows giving beautiful views of Athens.

A refurbishment inspired by fashion

A fashion landmark and meeting point in the city of Tel Aviv, the Ramat Aviv Mall offers a unique shopping experience with a wide range of shops, restaurants and cultural activities. Inside, there are shops of major fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton, Carolina Herrera or Rolex, which attract large numbers of shoppers every day. Faced with the need to refurbish the floor of the common areas, MYS Architects had the challenge of not altering their special character and, at the same time, minimising the impact on traffic, as the works had to be carried out while regular activity was taking place.

Its original design – created by the same studio and inspired by Galleria Vittorio Emanuel II in Milan – has been fully preserved in the renovation. The sophisticated atmosphere that contextualises the world of fashion and haute couture has been maintained through the use of natural materials in warm tones, such as wood, brass and Dekton, which reproduces the texture and colour of stone.

Classic design with contemporary materials

Among the various architectural elements of the shopping mall are the corridors with curved false ceilings, which provide a geometrical balance. The floor tiles were replaced by large slabs of Dekton Gada, a very natural colour inspired by quartzite, which adds a very elegant touch to the spaces. Domoos graphite black details finish off this refined and sober look. ‘Between the Dekton slabs we integrated brass trims and in the squares we created a special geometric pattern defining the meeting point of the space,’ explains Zehavit Simovitch Liberman, architect at MYS Architects.

Technical advantages

‘In technical terms, the 8 mm Dekton slabs in 144 x 320 cm format were a good solution for a quick glue application on the existing floor,’ says the architect, adding that this made it possible to speed up the work during night-time construction works. ‘The thickness of the Dekton slab, combined with its strength, allowed us to make minimal adaptations between the shops and the public spaces,’ she concludes.

Located in an old residential area on the outskirts of the city of Matamoros, in Tamaulipas, the Public Market is conceived as a reinterpretation of vernacular constructions in the northern part of the country. Colectivo C733 came up with a flexible structure for the community, reviving the red brick of the old rampart by using it as the project’s main material.

There are forty permanent stalls and the building acquires its form from using the divisions as buttresses. The roof’s prefabricated metal structure gives rise to an umbrella system optimally designed for the region’s climate conditions. Wrapping up the project is a low-maintenance garden-marsh that pierces through the building and grows with the passage of time.

On a lot barely 4 meters wide, the Madrid-based practice has intersected the exterior spaces, overhung by light elements, with a thin vertical prism, producing a sense of breadth and privacy without loss of brightness. In this way, each level of the house has an outdoor space of its own, whether a patio, a garden, or a terrace, expanding and complementing the interiors.

The day zone is on ground level, opening out to the garden cum swimming pool. The master bedroom takes up the floor above, with a spiral staircase floating over it and leading directly to the next story, where we find the other rooms, and then the roof deck. The basement is lit through a dug courtyard that takes up the entire front of the property.

A design that reflects quality and sustainability

Natural colours and a very contemporary design renew the aesthetics of the new showroom of Salboy, a property development company based in Salford, UK. In this way the project by Studio Power has achieved an image in keeping with the success of this company, which has delivered more than 2,400 homes across the UK and focuses on the development of high quality residential accommodation. Domis Construction helped bring the project to life from conception to construction, while Granite Tops UK was the manufacturer.

The multidisciplinary architecture studio chose Dekton by Cosentino surfaces for this project, not only because of their natural appearance, but also because of their durability and zero carbon footprint throughout their life cycle, thus contributing to an environment focused on sustainability.

Light and a sense of movement

Among the wide range of available designs, the team of architects chose Dekton Danae to bring the spaces to life. This colour, which is part of Dekton Natural Collection, plays with different shades of beige to create a sandy toned surface that reflects light and captures movement. It was supplied in different thicknesses for use as interior cladding, stairs and furniture. The 20 mm thickness was used for the stairs, while 12 mm surfaces were used for the reception counter and 8 mm for the cladding of walls, columns and planters. “Danae was the perfect shade for this project. We were impressed with the versatility of the different thicknesses. Danae can achieve really sharp details, such as in the planters and stairs, and its strength and durability are ideal for this application”, says Sam Power, Director of Studio Power.

A durable material

It is precisely the technical advantages offered by Dekton that make it the perfect material for this type of application in spaces where high traffic is expected and where durability is required. Dekton is highly resistant to scratches, stains, fire and heat. It is therefore perfect for commercial and residential projects involving stair surfaces, cladding, flooring and furniture, which will stay as good as new for a long time.

Minimalist design tables

The first pieces of furniture designed by Laurent Maugoust’s eponymous editor, in collaboration with his artistic director Cécile Chenais, are two sculptural tables with a lot of character and a graphic and dramatic design. Both were presented at the Silvera Saint-Germain showroom in Paris, with an exhibition that allows us to fully appreciate their textures and colours, among which Sensa and Scalea by Cosentino stand out.

With their Mantis table and Naïl coffee table, the creative pair have established a dialogue between materials and shapes which revolves around the geometric character of the design and a spirit that is as demanding as it is refined.

An ideal surface

Sensa Vancouver quartzite and Scalea Verde Guaco marble were the natural stones chosen for the design of these two tables. “Sensa was a great discovery in terms of product, originality and technology. Choosing Vancouver to create this table with such a special, organic and sensual touch is a real success”, explains Cécile Chenais.

Indeed, thanks to the Senguard NK protection, specially developed by Cosentino for the Sensa colour range, the material is exceptionally resistant to stains, aggressive and acidic substances and scratches, while at the same time being easy to maintain on a daily basis, making it an ideal surface. It is also NSF certified, which confirms it as a suitable surface for food contact, with no risk of staining or damage. In this way Sensa combines classic beauty with cutting edge technology, thus maintaining the natural colour of the stone.

Versatile materials

“The interesting thing about Cosentino is that its materials are very versatile. These include natural stones like Sensa, ultracompact and ultra resistant surfaces like Dekton and high tech materials of great aesthetic value like Silestone. They can therefore be used in kitchens as well as for high-end design and the creation of unique objects, which is what we did with this table and coffee table”, explains Laurent Maugoust. “It is very interesting for us to use such high quality products with outstanding technical solutions that can be adapted to different types of projects”, says Cécile Chenais.

A restaurant with an open and seamless design in Tel Aviv

The design of the new Grill Bar in Tel Aviv was a great challenge for interior designer Racheli Ben Avi. The aim was to create a seamless space that would offer clients a sensory experience through its atmosphere. “The biggest challenge of the project was planning the restaurant space. The idea was to create an open space that would encourage a natural and dynamic flow, allowing visual connection between the different parts of the space”, explains the designer. In addition to this, the combination of several different styles posed the challenge of maintaining a well-balanced and refined design.

“The eclectic style was achieved by integrating industrial materials, an exposed black painted ceiling, bronze light fixtures, a wine display cabinet, green plants and a brightly coloured pop art piece in the cladding”, she explains. To merge all these different elements, Racheli Ben Avi opted for Cosentino materials. The entire restaurant is clad in Dekton, including the bar counter, walls, cabinets and floor.

Inspired by nature

“My inspiration for the planning and design of the restaurant was nature itself. Its colours and intensity were my starting point”, says Racheli Ben Avi. The textures of Dekton gave the project that natural touch. Dekton Laos was used for the bar top. Its dark matt shades together with its weathered look reinterpret industrial design. This colour was combined with the luxuriant Dekton Trilium for a contemporary design. Inspired by volcanic stones, the colour mix of Trilium adds touches of deep grey and black shades. Bromo, a dark grey colour with a natural texture, has been used on the floor, thus rounding off the design.

Designed to last

“The planning and design of the project started with the selection of materials”, says the designer. Since it is a restaurant, it was important that all materials were durable, something that the Dekton colours chosen for the project guarantee. Without compromising on design and beauty, Racheli Ben Avi opted for Dekton’s technical properties to ensure durability. In addition to its resistance to stains and scratches, it is a very easy to clean surface, hygienic and perfect for food contact, thus meeting all the requirements of a catering establishment such as this one.

Visual richness

“From my perspective as a designer, my concept focuses on originality and visual richness. These are the hallmarks of the space that I have designed to offer a unique atmosphere to clients who come to enjoy both the place and the wonderful dishes served”, the designer points out.
