Las 3 Marías

Bajet Giramé + Burckhardt
Tarragona, Spain

The Barcelona-based studio, with Nicolas Burckhardt, has renovated this 1960s courtyard-house as a summer home for three sisters.

All the strategies applied in the project stemmed from traditional Mediterranean solutions. With the renovation, the entire house opens out to the courtyard, becoming a habitat where the line between inside and outside is deliberately ambiguous. The characteristic existing arches were replicated and reproduced to connect everything. Patios, porches, and gardens alternate with more private and protected rooms.

The complex is set on a ceramic topography – tiles of terracotta – that serves to unify the house and the garden while hierarchizing the domestic zones through variation in the patterns of pieces. Another objective was to improve the building’s thermodynamic performance through passive strategies, with openings facilitating cross ventilation and lattices shielding the interiors on the hottest summer days.
