House 1413

“This wall-house maintains the traditional urban continuity while allowing Harquitectes to experiment with a new, elongated typology… The program is kept to a single level, which adapts to the topography and determines the new geometry of the street”

House 1413, designed by the Catalan firm Harquitectes in collaboration with Montse Fornés and Maya Torres, sits on a plot in Ullastret, Firona, and tries to maintain the character and presence of the previous construction, even though urban guidelines made it necessary to do without the original wall.

The new house surrounds the garden like a fence, following the material and constructional logic of the preexisting wall-fence, the stones of which were reused, mixed with aggregate mined from the site along with limestone and cement. So the wall was coffered, and then the street-facing layer was chipped and left rough like stone, while the inner surfaces were left as they were, with the finish of the formwork.

The wall varies in thickness as it stretches through the plot, incorporating the more static and private spaces of the dwelling, such as bathrooms, bedrooms, the pantry, closets… Meanwhile, on the other side, a sequence of galleries is created that takes advantage of solar warmth in winter, and in good weather these galleries can be fully opened up to form a large porch, enhancing the connection between the private interiors and the garden. "The transition between the different climates in the building evolves constantly throughout the year".
