The Japanese studio has converted an old hotel building from the 1970s into a new design and art icon in the city of Maebashi.

The building is located in Maebashi, capital of Gunma Prefecture, a city known for its historic prominence in the silk trade. The project is inscribed within the broader plan to revamp the city under the motto ‘Mebuku’ (birth or sprouting in Japanese). The new hotel is structured in two parts: the ‘Heritage Tower,’ the old refurbished hotel; and the ‘Green Tower,’ a new wavy landscape that evokes the region’s mountainscape.

The place is devised as a gathering space for both tourists and locals. The lobby is set out as public plaza and the different rooms of the hotel are fused with a vast collection of art including works by Lawrence Weiner, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Tatsuo Miyajima, and Ryan Gander. Fujimoto himself and designers like Michele de Lucchi, Leandro Erlich or Jasper Morrison were commissioned to design one guestroom each.
