A lobby that looks like one from a luxury hotel

A first glance at the entrance and reception of the renovated headquarters of the glass distributor Van Noordenne in the Netherlands would not suggest that this is an office complex. It feels more like a luxury hotel, with its elegant design, sophisticated materials and precious interior design. For this new headquarters of Europe’s largest glass wholesaler, the firm has commissioned the interior designer Nathalie van Noordenne, who has put all of her passion and creativity at the service of this mega-project for this family company whose origins date back to 1938.

It was in the 1930s that Jan van Noordenne founded this family business. From a local company, it grew into an international wholesale business specialising in glass. Today, in its new headquarters, every effort has been made to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the company’s offices and restaurant.

Exotic beauty at the reception desk

The reception desk is the crown jewel of the lobby. The designer chose Sensa Orinoco to add a warm and stylish touch to this area. The rich, earthy tones of this colour, inspired by wild granite, along with its white, golden and copper veining, bring glimpses of beauty to this space.

A restaurant to match

The company’s restaurant, where Sensa Orinoco has also been used in large 2 cm thick slabs, has been conceived following the same design concept. The centrepiece of this area is the large Sensa Orinoco fireplace – an explosion of beauty when lit and a piece of sculpture when unlit. Furthermore, part of the wall has been clad with the same material. Certainly a high standard for a restaurant where customers, guests and staff can relax and enjoy an exclusive atmosphere.

Relaxed spaces with natural materials

The newly built hotel Scandic CPH Strandpark presents itself as a relaxed and welcoming meeting point in an ideal location. Halfway between Oresund, Copenhagen airport and the Danish capital, it offers privileged views and the beautiful backdrop of the local beach. It is the first hotel in the Scandic chain to focus on the brand’s new strategy of targeting a specific new design-loving guest.

Designed by the architecture and design studio Koncept, the project maintains a relaxed and open character in its design and interior design. It combines natural materials, such as Scandinavian wood, rope and rattan, with durable, recycled surfaces to suit the interior design trends of the future. In particular, Dekton and Silestone have been used to add character and functionality to spaces.

Functionality and aesthetics, two added values

‘We chose Silestone mainly because the table tops had to be durable, easy to maintain and clean in the restaurants, lounges, rooms and rooftop bar,’ Vera Arvidsson from Koncept explains. ‘And because it is resistant to heat and the constantly changing Scandinavian weather, Dekton works perfectly in the open kitchen and on the outdoor terraces,’ she continues. All these technical features also have the added value of sustainability, which reinforces the concept of the hotel itself, as the surfaces are made from recycled materials.

Multiple applications

Specifically, light sand-coloured Dekton Danae in matt finish has been used for the kitchen worktops, buffet and outdoor tables. Meanwhile, the coffee tables in the lounges, as well as the tables in the restaurant and skybar, are made of Silestone Coral Clay. Conversely, Silestone Eco Luna 14 – customised for this project and in Polished finish – has been used for the desks in the rooms, the worktops in the bars, the tables in the lounges and the conference room, all custom-designed by Koncept. In keeping with these materials, the window sills in the rooms feature a beautiful natural stone of travertine marble.

A balanced and very Scandinavian style

The collaboration between Cosentino and the architecture studio has been ‘smooth, simple and inspiring’, according to Jens Blaabjerg, Project Sales Manager at Cosentino Denmark. ‘The renewed Scandic concept aims to appeal to a new and specific segment of guests, and we are proud to be part of the interior design that beautifully balances the synergies between furniture, choice of materials, colours, lamps and the characteristic Scandinavian style,’ he adds.

Dekton, insulation, aesthetics and durability for facades

The Zeeduin renovation project is situated on the corner of Franslaan with Lefebvrestraat in Nieuwpoort. After a few decades, the façades - covered with relatively thin prefab silex concrete elements - showed concrete damage due to carbonation. The client and architect opted for a total renovation for the façades, with 4 mm thick Dekton Slim plates by Cosentino, glued on a ventilated aluminium support structure.

The apartment building dates back to the 1970s and has 6 above-ground floors. The gallery terraces, made of in situ concrete with the floor slab running from the inside to the outside without thermal interruption, were fitted with a mortar-bed tiling. Water penetration caused concrete damage and general degradation of the concrete coating. The absence of façade and roof insulation also contributed to a total renovation.

Dekton Slim, 4mm full of possibilities

A light façade cladding had to give the building a new, sleek and contemporary zest. This resulted in the choice of Dekton Slim plates (with a thickness of 4 mm), glued to an aluminium carrier. “This way the façade could be insulated to a maximum without bringing the façade surface too far forward,” according to the architectural engineer Ignace Deconinck of the eponymous Architecten Expertisebureau from Veurne.

A small balcony construction with a walking zone was provided for the apartments on the façade corner - with in the original condition only a balustrade in the façade surface. Not evident from a technical point of view. Good coordination (including dimensions and planning) between the main contractor (Aquastra), the balustrades subcontractor (Aluform) and the façade cladding subcontractor (Murex Stone) was required. After concrete repair, the gallery terraces were fitted with a new reinforced terrace compaction system and glass balustrades with front mounting of the uprights.

Nayla, an off-white full of nuances

The architect opted for a dark-coloured base (the ground floor) and a light superstructure to give the floors a more floating effect. “For the ground floor, we opted for a coating in fired blue bluestone, a good match with the small grey speckles, the white mass of the Nayla type and the terrace floors in a grey tone,” says Deconinck about the choice for the Dekton colour “Nayla” (white speckled).

“Thanks to its properties, Dekton delivers high-quality, technical performance compared to other existing surfaces: highly scratch-resistant, frost-resistant and thaw-resistant, and resistant to salty air and UV rays. Colour stability, dimensional stability and pressure resistance are high. With a fire reaction class A2, s1-d0, Dekton can even be used for tall buildings,” says Stephanie Bevernagie of Cosentino.

Luxury suites in a historic castle by the sea

The contemporary design of the suites at Hotel Gränsö Slott blends in with the historic surroundings and coastal landscape of this resort near the idyllic town of Västervik, Sweden. The setting could not be more privileged: a castle dating back to 1800 and a private beach. There, four new beach villas with sea views have been built. These 45 m2 holiday homes feature spacious bathrooms, a bedroom, living room and large terraces. The four villas of the hotel, Lillön, Skanvik, Ekholmen and Tärnskär, have been designed in partnership with Amelie von Essen, from the AHA Anders Holmberg Arkitekter studio.

“When creating the new interior design concept for the Gränsö beach villas, the most important thing was to create a warm and welcoming space with a Scandinavian touch that integrated the surrounding nature”, explains Amelie von Essen. Dekton was chosen as the main material for the bathrooms, with this being used on the walls, floors and countertops. In addition, independent and well differentiated spaces were created, with a separate bathtub, shower and toilet.

Colours and contrasts

Specifically, the architects chose three colours from Dekton by Cosentino. The first, Dekton Arga, conveys the brightness and tranquility of the precious Taj Mahal quartzite and has been used on the countertops, fronts and large format wall panels of these luxury bathrooms, giving them, thanks to its natural and smooth appearance, a Scandinavian touch. “The colour scheme of Dekton Arga, together with its clear high-gloss design in shades of sand, light grey and white, is reminiscent of shimmering, sun-warmed beaches and is therefore in line with the concept of ‘strandsviterna’ (beach suites)”, explains the architect. The second Dekton colour used was Laos, a unique matt bluish grey that gives the walls and shelves great depth. Finally, Dekton Kreta was chosen for the floor, offering an interesting contrast of textures.”

Uniform and rounded design

“The main features of these spacious bathrooms are the lack of joints and the large format wall cladding. Dekton was the perfect choice for the cladding of all bathroom surfaces, as its beautiful designs, together with its availability in large format slabs and thin thicknesses of 4 and 8 mm, provided us with the ideal solution to convey an appearance of luxury and exclusivity”, says von Essen.

Advantages for the bathroom

In addition to the aforementioned sense of uniformity, the chosen materials offer a wide range of technical advantages that make them the perfect choice for bathrooms. In the words of Oskar Pettersson, from Cosentino Scandinavia (Dekton manager in this project), “the material has the ideal properties for this type of room, with an almost zero absorption rate and a high resistance to scratches, ensuring that the surface remains unaltered after daily use”. Meanwhile, von Essen points out other aspects of Dekton that were crucial to their choice: “its stain resistance and easy cleaning and maintenance, as the suites receive guests every day”. “We knew it would be easy for the staff to clean the bathrooms and keep them fresh”, concludes von Essen.

Dekton Odin, a unique look and feel of wood that stands the test of time

The Ette hotel is a newly built hotel in Kissimmee, Florida, USA. There are several Disney parks in the same city. As a result, the hotel welcomes thousands of tourists every year. This 126-room hotel attracts mainly families who, after their visits to the parks, make the pool area the center of the hotel’s social life.

Both the architect and the project developer were clear about the properties of the material to be used in the construction and the façade of the pool area. They wanted a finish with the texture of natural wood which, at the same time, would blend in with the façade. Furthermore, the material needed to withstand the wear and tear of a busy area, sudden changes in temperature and even possible damage in a hurricane-prone state like Florida. In addition to the technical specifications, design played a key role: both the architect and the developer wanted the look and feel of wood for its beauty and warmth.

Dekton Odin stood out from the start as a very interesting option: firstly, because of its extraordinary strength and hardness which, together with its hazelnut colour, perfect for the modern and functional style of the hotel, provided the desired combination of strength and design; and secondly, because it also met the necessary requirements for installation with the Elemex Ceramitex® Facade system.

A façade to withstand Florida’s humidity

Florida’s unique weather conditions demanded a façade with a PERS system. The Pressure-Equalized Rainscreen System (PERS) is designed to retain moisture and prevent water from reaching the structural substrate. An air layer provides the necessary capillary force and ventilation to facilitate drainage and drying.

The PERS system also uses a joint system, known as infill strips, that reduces the amount of water penetrating the façade. Under balanced pressure conditions, water cannot penetrate the building structure.

Dekton is also the perfect partner for the Elemex Ceramitex® Facade system installed at the hotel. This integrated attachment technology allows the use of mitered corners on 90% of the façade.

Once again, Dekton has become a very interesting façade cladding, this time at the Ette Hotel, where it meets the highest technical requirements without sacrificing on design.

Dream suites in a classic Lanzarote hotel

The Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa is a classic style hotel on the island of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. Better known as the Gran Hotel, at 54 metres high and 15 storeys, it holds the record for being the tallest building on the island since it was built in 1970. The five-star hotel, which completed its renovation in April 2021, will reopen in September with fully upgraded suites.

The architect Quirina Morales is responsible for the refurbishment and interior design of these suites. For the bathroom update, she opted for a white material which contrasts with the blue of the sea and is resistant, but at the same time aesthetically pleasing. Silestone Calacatta Gold was chosen as a nod to the classic style of the hotel, which is over 40 years old.

The fifty Calacatta Gold countertops have been designed with a very modern cut that allows towels to be hung, thus avoiding the use of other elements and improving functionality. The washbasins –also in white– have been placed over the countertop, giving a neat and modern effect.

‘God is in the details’

This quote by Mies van der Rohe defines the philosophy of Morales’ studio. In her projects, including the Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa, she seeks to avoid standardisation in order to offer personalised, quality solutions. This excellence is also achieved in the materials used. The choice of a Silestone finish is consistent with her vision and with the category of a five-star hotel suite.

Calacatta Gold is undoubtedly a Silestone bestseller. Inspired by Carrara marble, it is part of the Eternal collection and features two textures: polished and suede. It is a material that works perfectly for both kitchen worktops and bathroom countertops and is available in 10 edge finishes. In addition, washbasins and shower trays can be manufactured from this material from predefined designs or can be created from scratch. The possibilities are endless: the only limit is the architect’s imagination.

A buffet counter to tempt the appetite as well as the eye

The Ritz-Carlton Abama is a five-star resort in Tenerife, the island of eternal spring. It is the perfect place to rest and relax while enjoying excellent guest service, in line with the philosophy of The Ritz-Carlton chain. With this purpose in mind, the renovation of one of its restaurants, “La Veranda”, was carried out in 2019.

The hotel has an extensive gastronomic offer with eight different restaurants, some of which have been awarded several Michelin stars. “La Veranda” is dedicated to breakfast and pop-up proposals. Therefore, this restaurant is equipped with large buffet counters where the food is beautifully presented and live cooking is performed.

During the modernisation project of the restaurant, led by Gregory de Clerck, all worktops were replaced with a single material: Dekton Olimpo. The result is a clear, relaxed and elegant atmosphere, in contrast to the warmth of the wood used in the dining area. Dekton Olimpo is a material from the Stonika collection inspired by Carrara marble. Its white colour with grey veins adds character and enhances the look of the restaurant.

The resistance of Dekton in cooking areas

Dekton can withstand the most extreme temperatures, such as hot cookware just taken off the hob. Furthermore, Cosentino's ultra-compact surface offers high resistance to scratches and aggressive chemicals, as well as almost zero porosity. Dekton worktops, with a 25-year warranty, were the best technical solution for the renovation of the buffet area.

From an aesthetic point of view, Dekton also had many advantages. The large format slabs (320 cm x 144 cm) create continuous, seamless surfaces that are more beautiful and easier to keep clean. These extra large slabs are ideal for worktops as big as those of “La Veranda”. Furthermore, the variety of thicknesses available (from 3 cm to 0.4 cm) multiplies the design possibilities allowing, for example, the same material to be used for worktops and kitchen cabinet doors.

The result is a sublime finish, beautiful and functional at the same time, ideal for surprising guests and making breakfast a first class experience.

Dekton perfectly adapts to every application

The LD Sevilla hotel is located in the north of the Andalusian capital, next to a service area and motorway exit. This strategically located hotel does not compromise on style, offering its guests a distinguished experience based on quality services and attractive designs. VAU Arquitectura has been in charge of the hotel's design. The architecture studio relied on Dekton’s ultra-compact surface for a multitude of applications, using 3,100 m2 in the building.

From the exterior façade, which must withstand high levels of solar radiation, to the always busy common areas, such as restaurants and toilets, Dekton's unique features perfectly meet the needs of a bustling hotel.

A façade with personality

Alejandro Rivero, the architect in charge of the project, took care of every detail of the design. Starting with the façade itself: "We wanted a cladding that would enhance the horizontal joints while concealing the vertical ones. This way, we could highlight one of the hallmarks of the building, which is precisely its horizontality".

The standard slabs (3200x1440 mm) were cut to three different heights (700 mm/350 mm/175 mm). These were adapted to the façade, which is characterized by different heights, sizes and cantilevers. For these reasons, we needed a versatile and adaptable façade material, something like a tailor-made skin. The slabs were deliberately placed in different stripes, without following a pattern, which creates an interesting contrast, a sort of 'disorder within order'.

A colour range inspired by nature

Dekton Keon was chosen from the wide range of colours for the façade. This colour is reminiscent of the variable granite formations and surfaces found in the surrounding area.

Dekton’s resistance and low levels of absorption make it ideal for the demanding, daily requirements of a hotel. Dekton Laos, Soker and Sirius colours have been used for the surfaces in the cafeteria and the guests’ bathrooms.

A material that takes care of details

The LD Sevilla hotel has an outdoor terrace that offers stunning views of the Andalusian capital, a place where you can enjoy a drink at the bar, which is also made with Dekton.

And last but not least, Dekton has been used to clad the main hall, softening the transition between exterior and interior. The versatility of the material, together with some details such as the die-cutting of façade pieces for backlit signs and vents “helped us to solve many technical issues of the project”.

The final result is "a building of clean lines with horizontal stripes enhanced by strong horizontal joints, where we have tried to create a powerful, unified image while maintaining attention to detail".
