Casa Decor, the discovery that shaped a house

The owners of this house were very clear when they visited Casa Decor 2020: they wanted a kitchen with the White Macaubas quartzite by Sensa and they wanted their home to be designed by Gärna Studio.

The couple, with 3 independent children, needed an open plan home with spaces that flow and communicate with each other. A cosy house to welcome their children and grandchildren and spend time together. These were their requests to Laura and Enrique of Gärna Studio, an architecture and interior design studio that the couple already knew well thanks to other projects that the architects and designers had carried out.

The project had two clear objectives: to create versatile spaces that could be used at different times depending on the needs; and to achieve a sense of unity in its design, with little variation in terms of elements and textures. To achieve this, Laura and Enrique looked for materials that were easy to fit and that would serve as a guiding thread between the different spaces. “We also played with different ceiling heights and lighting to achieve a greater sense of spaciousness and functionality, creating a welcoming atmosphere”, says Enrique García, architect and project manager at Gärna Studio.

The kitchen was the key to achieving a welcoming home. “They stressed the importance of the kitchen as a family meeting place to chat and share, and the desire to have an island to sit around while preparing meals”.

The couple visited the Casa Decor 2020 exhibition in search of inspiration and it was there that they fell in love with White Macaubas, the quartzite by Sensa that Gärna Studio had used in their ‘Narciso’ project. Being a natural stone, they were initially unsure about its use in the kitchen, but Laura and Enrique explained the benefits of Sensa’s anti-stain protection, which offers the possibility to enjoy the most unique designs of nature in every space of the house. Thus, this quartzite became the absolute protagonist of the kitchen, covering the central island and part of the floor.

Natural beauty

For the bathroom in the master bedroom they also opted for Sensa. In this case, the colour chosen was Taj Mahal, an off-white background crossed by soft brown veins. The bathroom countertop, together with the surrounding elements, such as the wallpaper with plant motifs or the wooden furniture, create a pleasant feeling of contact with nature.

The customers wanted a house that was modern but also timeless, so they went for a refined, architectural design with straight lines, based on natural materials such as stone and wood, to which they added powerful and colourful works of art. “Studying the best materials to meet the specific needs of this family made the project very enriching”, says Gärna Studio.

Versatility as a home philosophy

A house for everyday life with children, spaces for meeting friends and a vision for the present and the future in every corner. These were the requests of the owners of this house located in Madrid, whom Laura and Enrique of Gärna Studio accompanied throughout the entire process, from the purchase itself, in which they took into account the architectural potential of the house, to the final creative touch.

The structure of this large house fitted perfectly with the classic contemporary style that the family was looking for, which aimed to create versatile spaces with a vision for the future.

“We try to create homes and spaces that can easily evolve, with well-designed and timeless elements that serve as a base on which to add decorations that adapt over time: wallpaper, cushions or a lamp”, says Enrique García, project manager and architect at Gärna Studio.

The first floor is very spacious and bright and features interconnecting rooms. This area is devoted to daytime living and includes the living-dining room, which has a small bookcase on one of its sides and a fireplace clad in natural stone that helps to create a cosy and homely atmosphere.

The centre of attention: the kitchen island

From the living-dining room we can see the centrepiece of the kitchen, a large central island in Dekton Kelya. The majestic island was designed by Gärna Studio, who relied on the versatility and uniqueness of Dekton for its successful design.

“We were looking for a powerful element that would be able to reflect our connection to art”, says Enrique.

The kitchen was key for this family, as they were looking for a place to share time, eat, welcome guests or do homework with the children. In addition, its visual perspective from the living room and the terrace offered the possibility to show its importance, both in terms of functionality and design.

Entente cordiale

Madrid: XXL house - CASA EN LA FINCA FOTOS MANOLO YLLERA 4 228

Grandes proporciones, grandes formatos

5 NEIGHBORHOODS. 5 WAYS OF LIVING GLOBALLY.

We invite you on a journey through the architectural and the sensory, a voyage to the heart of urban style, guided by Loft, a series that brings to life the design, character, and essence of five iconic neighborhoods around the world.

Let’s begin our journey in England, among the bustling grey of Camden. We will make the most of our trip through Europe and enjoy colors under the Mediterranean light of Poblenou. We will leave the old continent behind and head for New York, where we will walk through Seaport, a color full of marine efflorescence, and then venture into Manhattan to visit the daring and sophisticated Nolita. Our chromatic and sensory journey will culminate in Detroit, in the ever elegant and unique Corktown.

LOFT Series - loft 02 237

Silestone’s 5 new colors are inspired by concrete, a material capable of instilling emotions through its textures, finishes, and shades, creating a new relationship between people and objects. A new soulful identity is born, in which materials come to life in their rawest form. Let’s get started.

01/CAMDEN

Rusty tones, steely shades, and the wear and tear of living spaces have inspired Camden. A soft, delicate, homogeneous grey, with a fine grain and a very subtle white veining. Camden is cement grey. It is a versatile, adaptable color, easy to incorporate with any decoration.

02/POBLENOU

Poblenou is a warm, smooth, shade of grey, with very subtle veins on its surface. A matte color reminiscent of Mediterranean sand. The ideal tone to use in a day-to-day family atmosphere.

03/SEAPORT

Seaport is a complex grey full of possibilities. It recreates a dark cement color with a worn charm. Its hazy white shade invites you to explore different atmospheres, offering a unique proposition. It is an eccentric color, with personality, ready to satisfy the most demanding preferences.

04/NOLITA

Nolita is a white color with interesting variations of neutral grey tones. It combines especially well with open spaces, where purity and calm are sought, walking hand in hand with art and avant-garde.

05/CORKTOWN

Its deep grey is ideal to combine with aged materials, such as exposed brick and subtle oxidized colors. Open-grained wood combines perfectly with Corktown to create elegant and mature spaces, and colors such as dark green, and deep grained stone help establish the soft lighting that is characteristic of sophisticated spaces.

How façade expert Friedrich Scharl reduced weight and costs with Dekton on KAP WEST in Munich

Interview with architect Walter Schelle: “Dekton, aesthetic and functional” - Friedrich Scharl 267

The façade of the new office complex at the Hirschgarten in Munich has a modern, urban look. The original plans using concrete or artificial stone, however, would have made it difficult to meet the tight schedule and to keep within budget. Façade expert, Friedrich Scharl, found an alternative which impressed the architects and developers: the ultra-compact surface Dekton by Cosentino.

Mr. Scharl, you did the technical designs for the façade on KAP West. What was wrong with the original plans?

FS: The weight and the costs. The building was designed with a ventilated curtain façade. The parts of the façade with triple glazing and stone-covered pilasters would have been completely preassembled before delivery to the site and put into place – it’s a typical process that requires a lot of planning and efficiency. The original plans envisaged the pilasters to be covered by 30 mm-thick, fibre-reinforced concrete or artificial stone. This would have meant that each part of the façade would have weighed approximately 1.5 tonnes. With so much weight, handling becomes difficult and the risk of damage increases. In addition, you need an elaborate substructure. In our case, this would have put the time frame and budget at risk.

So you started looking for a lighter façade covering?

FS: Correct, we needed a material with a high-quality stone look, but one that was thinner, and therefore lighter – and all things considered, at a lower cost. And finding a reliable supplier is not as easy as it sounds. Then we discovered Dekton. This ultra-compact surface is extremely stable and at 12 mm thick, weighing 32 kg/sqm, comparatively light. Even thinner material would have been available too. However, we needed this thickness to insert an undercut anchor on the back. With this it is possible to secure the plates firmly and invisibly on the façade.

What was most convincing material wise?

FS: As well as our chosen design options we also needed approval for the façade. Dekton is certified in accordance with ETA 14/0413 and CE 1220‐CPR‐1459. During tests it was proven that the material can even withstand a scale 7 earthquake. The fire protection class is A2. What was perfect for our project was: If a plate cracks, an integrated glass fibre net ensures that the broken piece is held in place. Thanks to its ultra-compact structure, the material takes in very little water. This means extra protection against weathering such as cold, heat and thermoshock as well as increased shape stability which allows for very close tolerance gaps of just +/-0.5 mm each. As well as the quality of the material, the quality of the supplier was also important to us. Would they be able to delivery 13,000 sqm “in time and quality”?

What impressed you about Cosentino as a supplier?

FS: We went there, together with the developers, the architects and those building the façades, as well as the people from Cosentino in Germany. The production facilities in Spain particularly impressed me. Dekon is produced there at a size of 3,200 mm x 1,440 mm in a continuous process, which means that the plates of one batch have the same quality, texture and colouring. Then follows the individual cutting and post-production work, which in our case means working the edges, mitre cuts, setting the undercut anchors and the clasps. The pre-assembled parts were then stored and delivered to those building the façade piece by piece – this was extremely reliable and in the correct order, which when working with 400 different elements and approximately 15,000 covering parts is a true piece of logistical mastery.

What effect did using Dekton have on the façade?

FS: Dekton looks aesthetically pleasing and is very good functionally. With the low weight of the façade covering, even the subconstruction could be made more simply and lighter compared to the original plans. It is now self-supporting. Using the façade building app in Germany, the aluminium profiles from Wicona were planned with the glazing and insulation, the sun screens and the electrics. Finally, the prefabricated Dekton plates were hung and secured. Each part of the façade is now about one-third lighter than at the beginning of planning. Instead of 1,500 kg, the weight is just 1,000 kg, which made transport and assembly much easier.

Were you able to keep to schedule and within budget?

FS: We had two teams on site, each with three employees. They worked parallel on different parts of the building and crane-operated, placed and assembled the elements in 20-minute intervals – 2,000 elements for about 12,600 sqm of façade in just seven months. It was just like clockwork. In addition, by using Dekton instead of concrete or artificial stone, we were able to reduce the cost by about 20 percent per square metre. The developer is happy since by doing this we kept to budget and schedule.

Mr Scharl, in which situations would you advise planners to take Dekton by Cosentino into consideration in particular?

FS: Dekton should always be considered since it offers a large range of design possibilities and is lighter than stone or concrete. The ultra-compact material is also more resistant and sustainable than glass or sheet metal. What really impressed me was the ability of the company to produce around 13,000 sqm of material with the same quality, colour and texture in less than a week. Not only the production, but also the technical and logistical coordination, as well as the communication with those building the façade and us as the technicians and the architects, was very good and reliable. This is extremely important on a big project like KAP WEST, where planning security in a short time frame makes all the difference and helped all involved do a super job.

La hotel chain OKKO commissioned Studiopepe to design the lobby and ‘Le Club’ for its new place within the Gare de l’est station of Paris. A feature of all OKKOs, Le Club offers a variety of amenities to serve the needs of clients throughout the day: breakfast and supper, a lounge, business meetings, and leisure activities. The interior is a diaphanous space freely organized by mobile elements like curtains and dividers. Decorative items are added, designed exclusively for the hotel, such as the large chandelier in the lobby or the sofas, besides a selection of Italian-design furniture: San Carlo armchairs by Castilgioni, Boomerang easy chairs by Rodolfo Bonetti, and the Atollo lamp by Magistretti.

The dining area and bar, directly connected to the station, draw inspiration from the shapes of train compartments, including original pieces from the Orient Express that have been restored and incorporated either as art displays or as part of the installations. As for color, the neutral soft tones chosen for the claddings are complemented by neon lights and an illumination that varies as the day goes by, resulting in a dynamic atmosphere. The materials enhance visitors’ tactile experience: Kvadrat textiles combined with velvet, brass, and postmodern-looking surfaces made of terrazzo and linoleum.

Sustainable comfort

In December 2019, the world known hotel chain HILTON opened a new property in Poland, the first “Hilton Resort” hotel in the country. It is also the first Hilton chain facility in Poland built in accordance with LEED ecological certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

The property offers its guests a unique hospitality experience with direct neighborhood of wide natural beach and magnificent views of the Baltic Sea. Guests can choose from 173 luxury rooms and suites, each with a private balcony. At their disposal, they have a wide selection of services, including variety of restaurants, bars, SPA as well as access to recreational facilities – Baltic Park Molo Aquapark.

Eternal Calacatta Gold for a luxury interior design

“The design is closely related with the hotel’s environmental context. The look of the building and its interiors is clearly inspired by the sea – the spaces are dominated by rounded, wavy shapes and natural colors of earth and marine flora. These consistent yet intriguing forms, colors and textures used across the entire property create a feeling of comfort and allow for a multidimensional perception of spaces.” – mentions Łukasz Pisarek, Chief Architect of Zdrojowa Invest.

Decorated with highest attention to details, Hilton Resort & SPA represents a perfect place for those who enjoy a moment of relaxation while surrounded by art and world class design. In order to ensure a feeling of luxury and highest quality, multiple surfaces in the hotel have been embellished by Silestone by Cosentino quartz conglomerate in one of its most elegant patterns – Eternal Calacatta Gold. Almost 700 m2 have been covered with this material, which, used in a wide variety of applications and combined with graceful textures and warm tones of wood, created a blend of ultra-stylish interiors across the entire building.

Surfaces that strike with subtle details

What cannot remain unnoticed is an extraordinary fabrication method of the Silestone surface. Following the main design idea, majority of the structures in Hilton are of curved, wave-like form. These organic shapes have been enfolded by the gold-veined quartz conglomerate, creating an astonishing effect that plays with light and volume.

“Eternal Calacatta Gold is a beautiful and impressive texture. Silestone’s quality could be seen, for example, in the rounded elements that had to be fabricated with highest precision and attention to details. Its production is very similar to work with natural stone – it allows you to freely finish the edges whilst keeping the original design of the material.” – says Dariusz Drzewiecki, Project Managerf of Cloon, fabrication company responsible for preparation of stone surfaces for the hotel

Ideal colors for every situation

Silestone with white background and delicate greyish veins played an important role in defining the atmosphere of the interiors. It was selected for multiple applications, from bathroom countertops in rooms and toilets, surfaces covering bars, buffets, and reception desk, to exclusive finishes of coffee tables or vertical panels. Thanks to use of this white and elegant material, even the most monumental structures present in the public spaces of the property are perceived as illuminated and subtle.

Beauty and resistance

Not without a reason Silestone was the material of choice for the work surfaces in the hotel.

„Project had to fulfill the highest aesthetic requirements and, at the same time, ensure the best durability of implemented solutions and products. In order to achieve that, all material proposals were verified by contractors after the design stage. As a result of this process, some finishes originally designed in natural stone were replaced by Silestone, particularly due to its properties and resistance to external factors.” – Łukasz Pisarek adds.

Hotel buffets, bathroom tops or furniture in a wellness studio are subject to extremely intensive use. These structures demand highly durable material, resistant to external factors like food, liquids, or chemical substances that can easily damage more sensitive surface. With Silestone, the Hilton’s interiors will certainly maintain their beauty for years.
