Minimalist design tables

The first pieces of furniture designed by Laurent Maugoust’s eponymous editor, in collaboration with his artistic director Cécile Chenais, are two sculptural tables with a lot of character and a graphic and dramatic design. Both were presented at the Silvera Saint-Germain showroom in Paris, with an exhibition that allows us to fully appreciate their textures and colours, among which Sensa and Scalea by Cosentino stand out.

With their Mantis table and Naïl coffee table, the creative pair have established a dialogue between materials and shapes which revolves around the geometric character of the design and a spirit that is as demanding as it is refined.

An ideal surface

Sensa Vancouver quartzite and Scalea Verde Guaco marble were the natural stones chosen for the design of these two tables. “Sensa was a great discovery in terms of product, originality and technology. Choosing Vancouver to create this table with such a special, organic and sensual touch is a real success”, explains Cécile Chenais.

Indeed, thanks to the Senguard NK protection, specially developed by Cosentino for the Sensa colour range, the material is exceptionally resistant to stains, aggressive and acidic substances and scratches, while at the same time being easy to maintain on a daily basis, making it an ideal surface. It is also NSF certified, which confirms it as a suitable surface for food contact, with no risk of staining or damage. In this way Sensa combines classic beauty with cutting edge technology, thus maintaining the natural colour of the stone.

Versatile materials

“The interesting thing about Cosentino is that its materials are very versatile. These include natural stones like Sensa, ultracompact and ultra resistant surfaces like Dekton and high tech materials of great aesthetic value like Silestone. They can therefore be used in kitchens as well as for high-end design and the creation of unique objects, which is what we did with this table and coffee table”, explains Laurent Maugoust. “It is very interesting for us to use such high quality products with outstanding technical solutions that can be adapted to different types of projects”, says Cécile Chenais.

Danish design

The 2021 edition was the first time that the Danish Embassy in Madrid participated as an exhibitor at Casa Decor, one of the most important events for decoration lovers in Spain. It had a good reason for doing so: to highlight the universality and timelessness of Danish design, embodied by outstanding figures like Arne Jacobsen, Hans J. Wegner, Verner Panton or Poul Henningsen or by renowned contemporary firms like Bang & Olufsen, Carl Hansen & Son, Fritz Hansen, Kvadrat or Louis Poulsen that rework these geniuses and for which Spanish designers like Jaime Hayón or Yonoh studio work.

The diplomatic mission chose the interior designer Erico Navazo to turn the impressive tower of the Casa de Tomás Allende, located at 3 Plaza de Canalejas (Madrid), into a stunning flat inspired by the New Bauhaus, an artistic and cultural movement of which Denmark is the leading exponent. The exceptional building, unique in the capital for its profuse regionalist-style decoration, was designed by the Cantabrian architect Leonardo Rucabado in 1916, but after his sudden death in 1918 it was completed by the architects Ramiro Saiz Martínez and Pedro Cabello Maíz, who faithfully followed his project.

A humanistic and sustainable approach

‘In my project, I try to capture the personality of my clients by tailoring my work to their needs. My design is born out of their need, I never forget that,’ says Erico Navazo who, on this occasion, has made the New Bauhaus designers’ way of working more than ever his own, with a humanistic and sustainable approach, based on craftsmanship and noble materials. For this group, everyday objects should improve people’s lives and be made in a sustainable way so that they last over time and in a universal spirit, integrating traditional elements from different cultures. In this space, wood, natural stone, leather and wool are paired with other reclaimed materials, maintaining the tradition of environmental friendliness and true sustainability.

Sensa, a stain-resistant natural stone

As a great lover of natural stone, the interior designer from Burgos, Erico Navazo, opted for a spectacular vertical fireplace in Sensa Vancouver by Cosentino, a Brazilian quartzite on a white background with veins that can have a greater or lesser thickness, creating a cracked surface that invites us to touch it.

Sensa by Cosentino stones are protected with a revolutionary stain-resistant treatment called SenGuard, which includes a 15-year warranty against staining, a perfect ally to avoid soot or grease marks.

A lobby that looks like one from a luxury hotel

A first glance at the entrance and reception of the renovated headquarters of the glass distributor Van Noordenne in the Netherlands would not suggest that this is an office complex. It feels more like a luxury hotel, with its elegant design, sophisticated materials and precious interior design. For this new headquarters of Europe’s largest glass wholesaler, the firm has commissioned the interior designer Nathalie van Noordenne, who has put all of her passion and creativity at the service of this mega-project for this family company whose origins date back to 1938.

It was in the 1930s that Jan van Noordenne founded this family business. From a local company, it grew into an international wholesale business specialising in glass. Today, in its new headquarters, every effort has been made to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the company’s offices and restaurant.

Exotic beauty at the reception desk

The reception desk is the crown jewel of the lobby. The designer chose Sensa Orinoco to add a warm and stylish touch to this area. The rich, earthy tones of this colour, inspired by wild granite, along with its white, golden and copper veining, bring glimpses of beauty to this space.

A restaurant to match

The company’s restaurant, where Sensa Orinoco has also been used in large 2 cm thick slabs, has been conceived following the same design concept. The centrepiece of this area is the large Sensa Orinoco fireplace – an explosion of beauty when lit and a piece of sculpture when unlit. Furthermore, part of the wall has been clad with the same material. Certainly a high standard for a restaurant where customers, guests and staff can relax and enjoy an exclusive atmosphere.

Spaces that show off

The Madre Vieja country house is a stunning place located in Guadalajara (Spain) that has everything you can imagine to enjoy a few days of rest and connect with nature. Without a doubt, this house is unique, both inside and out.

The owners of the Madre Vieja estate chose Diego Rodríguez and his team at Concepto DR to carry out this great challenge: to create an architectural and interior design project that would impress any guest and would be welcoming, warm and stylish. A carefully selected decor which suits any atmosphere and type of home in which it is used, and results in various spaces beautifully designed and full of character.

The owners’ aim was to convert it into a second home for weekends and holidays, and to enjoy one of their great hobbies, hunting. To this end, they have set aside part of the property for this purpose and equipped it to accommodate friends and family who are also fond of hunting.

The exterior of the property is elegant and stately, yet retains the essence of an old, traditional country house. The first thing you come across is the Campaspero entrance floor by Scalea, Cosentino’s natural stone collection. This entrance meets all expectations in terms of architecture, design and decoration while impressing guests.

Rural interior design with innovative surfaces

The common dining room, for gathering before and after a day in the countryside, has a great ally in terms of resistance and aesthetics: Dekton, in its colours Vera and Edora, is used for the table tops, and forms part of all the characteristic features that make up this room. The high ceilings with wooden beams and modern-style lamps, together with the walls decorated in keeping with the surroundings and context, make for a very special and unique interior style.

The living room is very spacious and consists of several rooms separated from each other by the furniture. And this area is dominated by a large dining table around which large windows let in light.

Both spaces have been designed with an avant-garde and sophisticated style, adding more rustic touches, such as wooden floors, ceilings and doors, which provide a fantastic sense of warmth.

On the other hand, the living room is a little smaller and cosier. Here, more natural-looking elements have been used, including organic fabrics for the sofa, cushions and rug, as well as wood, which can be found in different applications, from floors and stairs to various tables, each with a distinct style. This room leads, via a spiral staircase, to a small classic style library that surrounds it at the top, leaving the central area of both spaces free.

Protected natural stone for selected spaces

The bathrooms stand out for the visual continuity in the application of their materials, which creates spaces of great beauty, turning such an intimate and necessarily comfortable room of the home into the centre of attention it deserves.

Both bathrooms are clad with Sensa Natural Stone, one with Taj Mahal quartzite and the other with Black Beauty granite. Designs with contrasting tones, but with a beauty and resistance to all types of stains.

Quality and versatility: the key to materials

When designer Mauricio Gutiérrez of Design Influence undertook this home renovation project in Illinois (USA), it was clear to him that he needed quality materials that were aesthetically powerful and durable. Gutiérrez had collaborated with Cosentino in the past and was familiar with the wide range of materials and applications, and knew that they not only allowed him to bring his creative vision to life, but also to offer solutions for every room in the house.

For more than a year, the Cosentino team worked hand in hand with the designer and fitter to bring this impressive project to life. A house that never ceases to amaze in which materials have been used in a very innovative way. The result is a true testament to the versatility and ability of Cosentino materials to translate the ideas of the plan into reality.

An elegant and functional kitchen

The elegance of the world’s finest white marble can be found in the kitchen thanks to Dekton Rem. In this space, the floors, worktops, splashbacks and dining table show the beauty of this colour with brown and grey veins and hints of gold on an off-white background. Its tones blend perfectly with the dark units and black fittings and interact with the contemporary-style golden chandelier suspended above the worktop. In addition to its stylish appearance, Dekton provides technical properties that make this kitchen both functional and durable. Due to its high resistance to heat, scratches and stains, it is the perfect solution for these work and dining areas.

Well-being and relaxation in the bathroom

Finally, in the bathroom, the designer wanted to give a harmonious look by using the same material in several applications. He decided on Sensa Gabana in Leather finish, a unique granite that is used for the bathroom countertop, the inner and outer walls of the shower, the washbasin and a bench. This natural grey stone with fine white veining creates a relaxing atmosphere and transforms the bathroom into a real spa.

The white revolution

‘I am in a period of aesthetic redefinition’, Raúl Martins admits. The change began during lockdown. That time at home made him realise that he had too much stuff and he decided to put it away. He removed ornaments, wallpapers, textiles, antiques…‘It has nothing to do with being a minimalist. I love objects. I love decorating the spaces. I just prefer to have fewer but better things around me,’ he continues.

In the interior designer’s opinion, this search for the quality of what is well made is based on artisan and local products. ‘It is about having more precious things. And I am not only talking about the economic aspect. A traditional, handmade earthenware jar may have the value for which we are looking,’ Martins explains. The most important thing is that these things have soul. To convey more by using less. And even if it is more complicated, I think it is more honest and environmentally sustainable.’

He began by experimenting with the walls and continued by plastering tables, mirrors and vases in white. ‘I like to play with contrasts, adding a touch of brown or black and different textures’. As in the furniture, made from natural stones such as granite, bamboo cane, whitewashed wood, terracotta or ultra-compact materials such as Dekton, which are highly resistant, versatile and aesthetically beautiful.

Dekton and the furniture design

Most of the objects in the house are designed by Raúl Martins himself, as in the entrance, where the Dekton Khalo bench contrasts with a painting by Vicente Soriano with stucco, as well as some of the selected antiques. For example, in the kitchen dining room, a set of tables and chairs from the 1950s by Concha Ortega has been refurbished with Dedar upholstery and a top in Dekton Aura, the same material used for its resistance to scratches, stains and heat in kitchen worktops, which is fitted with Dismuco furniture.

‘I love stone in general, from natural stones to its derivatives,’ adds Martins, who once again opted for the low porosity of Dekton to decorate the front of the washbasin in the bedroom bathroom. The natural beauty of the Dekton Khalo design combines perfectly with a mirror designed by Findings Gallery.

High performance natural stone

For another bathroom, Martins chose a Sensa Sant Angelo granite washbasin by Formas de Pedra on a brass and steel vanity unit. He finished it off with a black lacquer and brass mirror and hand-painted wallpaper.

Unlike other granites, Sensa by Cosentino natural stones have a revolutionary anti-stain treatment that makes them highly resistant to stains, with a 15-year warranty. A product especially suitable for kitchens and bathrooms where a unique design with outstanding performance over time is required.

Old World textures

‘Our architect, Michael Cardinale, wanted to reinterpret the style of typical European villas in a contemporary manner and planned to use marble as the main feature. However, he quickly dismissed this idea. The owners of the Izvor House are a big family with a very active social life and needed a much stronger material’, Kylie Petrou, Project Manager at Axon Homes, explains.

They found the right product in Cosentino’s materials: an extremely compact quartzite with unique stain resistant protection and a classic pattern. Sensa White Macaubas also fitted perfectly with the other finishes they wanted to use, such as walnut veneer, terracotta accessories and Japanese tiles in olive green or Mediterranean blue.

A surface that withstands wear and tear

The owners of this home are keen cooks and love having family and friends over. Therefore, one of their main demands was that the work surfaces should have the best possible performance in terms of scratch and heat resistance. ‘They love to put hot pots, pans or baking trays directly on the worktop or on the table for serving’, Petrou explains. This challenge was met thanks to Dekton, with the Domoos colour for the work area and unit doors and the Uyuni colour for the dining room table. For the island, they chose Sensa White Macaubas quartzite.

In the outdoor cooking area, they also opted for Dekton because of its high resistance to the sun’s rays and temperature changes. In this case, Domoos was used both for the units and the worktop alongside Bromo for the table top.

The ‘Wow’ effect

‘Without a doubt, two of our favourite images involve the contrast created in the kitchen, with the dark Dekton background and the Sensa White Macaubas island, and the impressive interplay of shapes produced by this same cladding on the balustrades leading to the living room and on the sides of the five-metre-high fireplace’, Axon Homes explains.

This project consisted of a carefully selected set design, where the small details help to improve the visual appearance, giving a more orderly image. Every element counts and enhances the rest. This is the case of Dekton Domoos that frame the bathroom tiles and shape the washbasins, creating an overall clean and relaxed atmosphere with their refined design.

The same care can be seen in the design of the staircase, where Michael Cardinale combined Dekton Domoos treads with a Sensa White Macaubas riser for an elegant sense of lightness.

Dekton Domoos and Uyuni were also used in other features, such as the worktop of the TV sideboard, the office table and the furniture and surfaces in the laundry room, bringing strength and sobriety to these spaces.

A very personal project

RTE radio presenter Jenny Greene and her wife Kelly Keogh moved into their dream home on 12th March 2020, the day before Ireland went into lockdown. After purchasing their new home, they were both in agreement that their number one room was to be their bathroom and working with designer Michelle Dunne from Realm Concepts, the decision was made early on to convert the main guest room into a luxury bathroom.

Michelle Dunne speaks about the design plan, “Initially, when the house was bought it had four bedrooms with one very small bathroom on the return, so when we were looking at the layout, it made sense to knock the wall between the two front bedrooms to create a much larger main bedroom and change the second bedroom next to this room into a spacious bathroom”.

“The clients had a very specific wishlist. They wanted two sinks, a large walk-in shower, a stand-alone bath, and plenty of storage. Storage was going to be key as they were sacrificing one of the bedrooms. In terms of the style brief, the clients wanted to go for an ‘Industrial look’ and that they didn’t want it to be too feminine. When starting any new project, I like to get a sense of the client’s own personal style, how they dress etc.”

All of nature’s originality, at home

The Sensa by Cosentino colours are unique and exclusive, they are in tune with the nature that has created them. There are 16 different shades available, each one of them in different textures: suede, polished or caresse. Sensa colours are presented with a beauty born from nature and selected by Cosentino, to turn these surfaces into a unique and unparalleled design. Sensa by Cosentino is the natural stone collection of Cosentino Group that counts on a stain resistant protection that makes them unique, elegant and high-quality surfaces with reliable properties.

Michelle mentions, “As the walls and the shower were going to be so dark, the floor needed to be bright and clean. Silestone Desert Silver was the perfect choice to complement Sensa Black Beauty.”

Silestone, an easy to maintain designer surface

Michelle explains that, “For the walls, the clients weren’t afraid of bold colours; and in my mind I had already been thinking of a dark green, but it just so happened when we visited Cosentino’s showroom, the client was wearing a lovely khaki jacket which certainly helped to visualize the palette and inform our selection of the stones.”

On choosing Sensa Black Beauty, Michelle outlines, “When I saw the Sensa black beauty and enquired about the size of the slab I did a rough calculation in my head and realized it was the perfect size to get both the shower walls and the vanity unit in one slab. This was ideal as we didn’t want to waste any material”.

On deciding to choose a suede finish for the Silestone floor, Michelle outlines that “I think that suede and matte finishes are timeless so it was important for design longevity to select stone that will transcend the years. A monochrome base and palette can achieve this. It means that the clients can freely update the look of their bathroom over the years just by changing the paint colour on the walls.

Finally, client Jenny Greene added, “The team at Cosentino were so helpful to us. We are so happy with each and every piece from Cosentino”.
