A celebrity oasis with high-end design

This house was literally designed for film and television stars to stay in while filming for a content production company that broadcasts in the New Mexico area. An ambitious challenge that Steven Storms, project manager and lead design consultant at Apex Homes, undertook with a complete refurbishment after finding the perfect house for this purpose. With a privileged location, stunning city and mountain views and plenty of privacy, the home was ideal for the project.

Storms managed to create a real oasis for celebrities, a place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And to all this he added luxury, sophistication and elegance in every detail. The design was based on the highest quality products and materials. Among them, Dekton and Silestone were two of the key features to add the perfect finishing touch. Both were chosen for their contemporary design and high consistency and can be found in the home in various applications.

New Mexico Home - 1 scaled 65

Balance of contrasts

Dekton Helena was used for the kitchen worktops, the island and the pantry. With its translucent appearance and onyx-inspired white and grey tones, it brings light and elegance to this part of the house. Helena is the perfect complement to Dekton Radium, a dark brown with hints of green and blue that is used for another kitchen island, the walls and the floating bars in the living room. Both colours create an atmosphere of perfect harmony. While Helena brings elegance and modernity, Radium provides warmth and visual power. Furthermore, Silestone Eternal Noir was used for two vanity units in the bathrooms. With its deep black base with white veins, it brings beauty and durability to these spaces.

Design with character

This eight storey building, whose façade stands out in the landscape, is situated in the residential neighbourhood Aguas Férreas, in Lugo (Spain). For its design, “one of the basic premises of the developer, Dmanán Viviendas, was to design and execute an environmentally friendly building with an appearance that would stand out from its surroundings”, explains architect Patricia Montes from Aringal SL, the architecture and engineering firm in charge of the project. Therefore, from the very beginning of the project, Aringal’s work focused on combining the client’s objectives with the philosophy of its own company, which is very committed to incorporating sustainability into its projects.

The majestic appearance of the façades and their clean design gives this building a unique character. “The straight forms, terraces, window openings and materials used are its unique features”, says architect Patricia Montes. Two materials were combined in the façades of this building, creating a play of textures: Dekton Edora, a light grey shade with a minimalist look, and Corten steel.

Aguas férreas - MG 4184 1 scaled 102

The perfect match

“Dekton and Corten steel, a material whose colour changes continuously throughout the oxidation process due to the effect of light and atmospheric conditions, are combined in the façades, giving the building the distinctive final appearance sought by the planners“, says Montes. Both materials form a perfect combination in compliance with the Guía de Colores y Materiales de Galicia (Guide of colours and materials of Galicia). “In this way, they contribute to the proper integration of the building into the landscape and to a better quality of public space”. Dekton’s properties are also perfect to go hand in hand with Corten steel, a material that forms a surface oxide layer that could stain the materials used on the façade. “Something that does not happen with Dekton thanks to its zero porosity, a result of a sintering and ultra-compaction process exclusive to Cosentino”, says Montes.

Stylish shapes

According to the studio, orientation, views and location were decisive in the design of this unique building which houses a total of 32 flats. “The sunlight and the wide, clear views to the south-east determined the location of the building’s rooms, with the main rooms facing southeast and the sleeping areas facing north-west, opening onto the common space that gives access to the dwellings”. The south-east façade, with large terraces framed by Corten steel volumes running along the façade as an extension of the main rooms of the flats, opens up to the clear views of the valley. Meanwhile, the window openings on the north-west façade, also framed in Corten steel, are designed to optimise the capture of natural light.

A commitment to sustainability

The projects of this architecture firm are characterised by pursuing maximum sustainability and opting for Breeam certification with the aim of reducing the environmental impact on the surroundings. To this end, they apply passive design strategies, minimising the use of resources such as energy or water, and opting for the use of materials with a low environmental impact. “In this sense, the use of Dekton ensures thermal comfort thanks to its technical properties. It is also a material with a low level of VOCs and has an environmental product declaration (EPD)”, concludes Montes.

Spain at the Dubai Expo

Under the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, the 2020 World Expo finally opened its doors in Dubai on 1st October, almost a year later than planned due to the delay caused by the pandemic. The Expo will be attended by more than 200 participants and will run until 31st March 2022. The Spanish Pavilion addresses participation and sustainability as the main axes of its design thanks to the project ‘Personas lugares’ (People places), by the team of Atxu Amann, Andrés Cánovas and Nicolás Maruri (Temperaturas Extremas Arquitectos).

With a surface area of 5,800 m2, the Spanish Pavilion features a large square that integrates a series of conical volumes that stand out in the space like the chimneys of a thermal power plant, providing shade and ventilation thanks to their ventilated façades. For the interior spaces, passive bioclimatic systems have been used to support ventilation and cooling. Additionally, part of its cladding consists of photovoltaic panels and involves the recovery of 90% of the materials used.

Sustainable and versatile materials

Among the materials used in the design of the project, Dekton and Silestone stand out. Cosentino has provided a total of 3,000 m2 of its Dekton ultracompact surface for different uses as well as countertops and bars made from Silestone. Thus, the Spanish Pavilion becomes a real showroom of materials where the great versatility and variety, as well as the alignment with the values and themes of the Expo, are on display. Sustainability, resource efficiency, circular economy and innovation are the keys to Cosentino’s materials.

Large exhibition spaces

The floor of the main exhibition gallery, which houses the spectacular exhibition ‘El bosque de la Inteligencia’ (The Forest of Intelligence), designed in partnership by External Reference (Carmelo Zappulla) and Onionlab (Aleix Fernández), features a large format (155 x 140 cm) floor in Dekton Radium (700 m2), from the Industrial series. Radium, a colour with the appearance of rusted, acid-degraded steel plate, offers a design that blends perfectly with the ochre and brown shades of the creative proposal. The blue green forest stands out and welcomes visitors to this space whose theme is in line with the sustainable production of Radium, which incorporates up to 80% recycled materials in its composition.

Meanwhile, the stunning Dekton Halo Xgloss finish shines on the floor of the foyer, another of the iconic elements of this Pavilion, which hosts the art installation ‘Dinamo’, created by Daniel Canogar in collaboration with the composer Francisco López.

“The ability of historical architecture to connect with our times and to effectively resolve issues based on climate buffering and representation is one of the keys to the project”.

Dekton, the star of the flooring

The wall and floor cladding of the bathrooms, foyers and kitchen in the Basement Floor, are made of 4 mm thick Dekton slabs in Kreta colour. Meanwhile, the elegant graphite black shade of Dekton Domoos has been used on the exit ramp of the Pavilion, in combination with Dekton Zenith on the ventilated façade, which features vinyl prints representing the main themes of the Pavilion.

Finally, the flooring of the Main Restaurant on the first floor is made of Dekton Arga, from the Stonika series, which brings the sophistication of Taj Mahal quartzite, with a soft cream background crossed by brown and golden veins.

The versatility of Silestone in the restaurant area

As for Silestone, it displays all its beauty and performance in the main restaurant areas of the Pavilion. The iconic Silestone Blanco Zeus is the star of two spaces located on the first floor, the Main Restaurant, where it has been used for the bars and islands, and the Tapas Bar. Additionally, Silestone Eternal Charcoal Soapstone has been used on the counter of the restaurant area, La Gran Barra, as well as on the bathroom countertop of the Main Restaurant.

Quality for a high traffic area in Lisbon

With hundreds of people visiting one of the largest shopping centres in Portugal, the materials used in the flooring are paramount to ensure the durability of the design. That is the key to this project: a resistant and durable material such as Dekton that meets the needs in terms of design and functionality at one of the entrances of the Dolce Vita Amadora Shopping Centre, in Lisbon, Portugal.

Two architects from Broadway Malyan, one Spanish and one Portuguese, teamed up to design this high traffic area with open spaces exposed to the elements, which is located at one of the entrances to the shopping centre. The availability of Dekton in large format slabs made it the perfect material to create a seamless and expansive space to welcome visitors.

Large format

The colours chosen for the project, based on a neutral palette, enhance the sense of cleanliness and spaciousness in this high traffic area. Specifically, the colours chosen were Blanc Concrete, Vegha and Keon in large format slabs -some of them up to 3.20 x 1.40 m- and with a thickness of 12 mm. Thanks to its availability in large format slabs, Dekton is the perfect solution for designing large surface areas, minimising the number of joints and providing a more welcoming and functional design.

Three colours in harmony

While Blanc Concrete, an aged white with small veins in light grey and beige, adds luminosity, Vegha (from the Natural Collection) brings a natural feel with its textures inspired by limestone and sandstone. Finally, the light toned and bright Dekton Keon adds the finishing touch to the interplay of colours.

A customised design rich in textures

Located in the so-called Art Triangle, opposite the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Queen Sofia National Museum Art Centre), the hotel’s design unsurprisingly pays homage to Madrid’s most popular and musical side. Vibrant colours and a modern concept run throughout the rooms, suites and common areas, where different shades of Dekton and Silestone have been used for wall claddings, fittings and furnishings.

“We were surprised by the versatility of the materials and finishes, so we also used them for furniture, fittings and different equipment in a wide variety of thicknesses”, says Rockwell Group, the architecture studio responsible for the design of the new Hard Rock Hotel in Madrid.

Hard Rock Hotel Madrid - cosentino hhrc madrid DSC 4956 scaled 309

An example of many applications

“We worked with Cosentino to create customised solutions for the interior spaces of the Hard Rock Hotel Madrid, such as anti-slip finishes, large format tiles, cement look for the outdoor spaces and a unique, customised, terrazzo-look finish for the room showers and some of the furniture, which is a main feature of the design”, say the architects. Specifically, Silestone was used for the cladding of bathrooms, worktops and table tops in the suites and for the bar worktops and table tops in the common areas. As for Dekton, it was used to clad the countertops of the bathrooms on the main floor, as well as for the flooring, steps and the swimming pool.”

Quality solutions

The chemistry between the studio and Cosentino was immediate and allowed Rockwell Group to meet the schedule and expectations of the customer, ASG Iberia. “Cosentino’s technical team was a constant source of support, as they studied the project from the beginning. They provided solutions in terms of quality and design”, explains the studio. Everything was taken care of in detail, creating personalised spaces that give the hotel its own identity, “such as the custom tile finish in the rooms that offered a durable solution with a beautiful design”, they say.

One of the largest hotels in Finland

The former Finnish State Railways VR headquarters building, originally designed by Eliel Saarinen and completed in 1909, has been transformed into a Scandic Hotel. The building is strongly tied to Helsinki’s railway station, an important part of the cityscape as well as culturally and historically significant, as it served as the railway administration headquarters for almost a century. The design work on the hotel was exceptionally demanding. The building is protected under the Act on the Protection of the Built Heritage.

Representing Eliel Saarinen’s Art Nouveau style, the former Finnish State Railways VR headquarters building was renovated and expanded into an elegant hotel with almost 500 rooms as well as meeting and event facilities. The cultural and historical landmark’s demanding renovation and change of use was carried out in cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency and the city of Helsinki.

The renovation was an exceptionally demanding project. Protected parts of the building include its entire exterior and roofing, as well as its main lobby, main staircase and hallways, the longest of which is 159 metres long.

Hotel Scandic Grand Central Finland - Cosentino casestudy hotel grand 363

Silestone, between the elegance and the versatility

The building’s extension was built according to the design proposition from the architectural office Futudesign, which won an architecture contest for this project in 2017. The new extension completes the elegant hotel complex, which also includes a beautiful courtyard and an outdoor terrace for the restaurant.

A first-class classic meeting place in the heart of the city, the hotel’s Bar G provides a colourful and cosy oasis for relaxing. Customers can enjoy refreshing drinks and stylish cocktails from the bar’s elegant Silestone Eternal Marquina countertops.

The stylish restaurant inspired by classic European cuisine features stunning matte black Silestone Eternal Marquina kitchen worktops. These Silestone worktops offer an excellent combination of elegance, quality and resistance.

Dream suites in a classic Lanzarote hotel

The Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa is a classic style hotel on the island of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. Better known as the Gran Hotel, at 54 metres high and 15 storeys, it holds the record for being the tallest building on the island since it was built in 1970. The five-star hotel, which completed its renovation in April 2021, will reopen in September with fully upgraded suites.

The architect Quirina Morales is responsible for the refurbishment and interior design of these suites. For the bathroom update, she opted for a white material which contrasts with the blue of the sea and is resistant, but at the same time aesthetically pleasing. Silestone Calacatta Gold was chosen as a nod to the classic style of the hotel, which is over 40 years old.

The fifty Calacatta Gold countertops have been designed with a very modern cut that allows towels to be hung, thus avoiding the use of other elements and improving functionality. The washbasins –also in white– have been placed over the countertop, giving a neat and modern effect.

‘God is in the details’

This quote by Mies van der Rohe defines the philosophy of Morales’ studio. In her projects, including the Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa, she seeks to avoid standardisation in order to offer personalised, quality solutions. This excellence is also achieved in the materials used. The choice of a Silestone finish is consistent with her vision and with the category of a five-star hotel suite.

Calacatta Gold is undoubtedly a Silestone bestseller. Inspired by Carrara marble, it is part of the Eternal collection and features two textures: polished and suede. It is a material that works perfectly for both kitchen worktops and bathroom countertops and is available in 10 edge finishes. In addition, washbasins and shower trays can be manufactured from this material from predefined designs or can be created from scratch. The possibilities are endless: the only limit is the architect’s imagination.

Signature interior design

In June 2020, Gustavo Marasca, a young and promising Brazilian architect, designed this beautiful private home in Rio Claro, São Paulo, Brazil. In only six months he successfully completed the construction and interior design with a stunning result. The most striking feature of this project is that, in addition to the perfect execution of the building in terms of façade and exterior volume, the architect has worked on a very careful interior design, with a selection of materials and qualities.

And in this selection of finishes, hyper-modern materials such as Dekton Trilium and Silestone Noka are combined with other more classic and timeless ones such as Dekton Natura, Dekton Rio Blanco and Silestone White Zeus.

The kitchen is a spectacular space with its large-format Dekton Natura worktop with rounded edges, which can seat eight people and can be used for showcooking. The material chosen is reminiscent of Carrara marble, but without the disadvantages of marble, which is not suitable for use in wet areas.

The ideal material for every space

The bathrooms are designed to the millimetre, combining countertops with lacquered wooden doors, designer handles and wallpaper. For the master bathroom, a countertop in Silestone Noka (dark brown colour) has been chosen, which creates a contrast with the white lacquered vanities. For the other bathrooms, the architect has opted for Silestone White Zeus with grey or light green lacquered wooden furniture and brushed brass handles.

Another striking feature is the impressive staircase in Dekton Rio Blanco suspended in the living room with its light glass balustrade. Technical attributes such as resistance to sunlight and scratches as well as its undeniably attractive appearance played an important role in the choice of this material. Six 1.2cm thick slabs, measuring 320 x 144 cm, have been used for the staircase to ensure that it will stand the test of time.

‘I chose Dekton Trilium for the façade because of its unique design and the size of the slabs which allows them to be cut into different shapes’

An impressive Dekton Trilium façade

The refinement and sensitivity of the interior of the home contrasts with a very architectural Dekton Trilium façade. The Trilium finish is reminiscent of rust. It is a mix of volcanic, grey and black colours and the first 100% recycled Dekton material. Marasca decided to use this material in ‘Slim’ format to create a flawless corten steel effect. Furthermore, this format makes installation easier due to its lighter weight and transforms the façade into something light and modern.

The result is a contemporary and functional home, designed with attention to detail inside and out, with Marasca’s distinctive style. Not surprisingly, this young and promising architect says he wants to transform the lives of his clients through their homes and defends the idea that true beauty is in the details.
