Relaxed spaces with natural materials

The newly built hotel Scandic CPH Strandpark presents itself as a relaxed and welcoming meeting point in an ideal location. Halfway between Oresund, Copenhagen airport and the Danish capital, it offers privileged views and the beautiful backdrop of the local beach. It is the first hotel in the Scandic chain to focus on the brand’s new strategy of targeting a specific new design-loving guest.

Designed by the architecture and design studio Koncept, the project maintains a relaxed and open character in its design and interior design. It combines natural materials, such as Scandinavian wood, rope and rattan, with durable, recycled surfaces to suit the interior design trends of the future. In particular, Dekton and Silestone have been used to add character and functionality to spaces.

Functionality and aesthetics, two added values

‘We chose Silestone mainly because the table tops had to be durable, easy to maintain and clean in the restaurants, lounges, rooms and rooftop bar,’ Vera Arvidsson from Koncept explains. ‘And because it is resistant to heat and the constantly changing Scandinavian weather, Dekton works perfectly in the open kitchen and on the outdoor terraces,’ she continues. All these technical features also have the added value of sustainability, which reinforces the concept of the hotel itself, as the surfaces are made from recycled materials.

Multiple applications

Specifically, light sand-coloured Dekton Danae in matt finish has been used for the kitchen worktops, buffet and outdoor tables. Meanwhile, the coffee tables in the lounges, as well as the tables in the restaurant and skybar, are made of Silestone Coral Clay. Conversely, Silestone Eco Luna 14 – customised for this project and in Polished finish – has been used for the desks in the rooms, the worktops in the bars, the tables in the lounges and the conference room, all custom-designed by Koncept. In keeping with these materials, the window sills in the rooms feature a beautiful natural stone of travertine marble.

A balanced and very Scandinavian style

The collaboration between Cosentino and the architecture studio has been ‘smooth, simple and inspiring’, according to Jens Blaabjerg, Project Sales Manager at Cosentino Denmark. ‘The renewed Scandic concept aims to appeal to a new and specific segment of guests, and we are proud to be part of the interior design that beautifully balances the synergies between furniture, choice of materials, colours, lamps and the characteristic Scandinavian style,’ he adds.

Second life

The main challenge of this house is to dialogue with its own site, an iconic building of national architecture designed by the Catalan architect José Antonio Coderch in the mid-1960s. The Girasol building, on the corner of Madrid’s exclusive Ortega Gasset and Lagasca streets, is characterised by a masterful use of natural light. Each house rotates on its axis towards noon and this rotation is calculated according to the most favourable positions of the sun throughout the day and the different seasons of the year.

‘The owners – a young couple who live with their friendly beagle dog named Milka – wanted to respect its essence as much as possible, maintaining the brightness of the spaces, but with a larger and more continuous layout. They asked for the best quality and specially designed materials to be used, such as those by Cosentino. They were looking for modern and functional finishes, but at the same time they wanted to create a cosy space,’ explains Domus Arquitectura studio, in charge of giving this flat a second life.

‘The initial layout, typical of the period when it was build, was irregular, made up of suspended ceilings that reduced the usable heights and fragmented spaces that lost part of their potential. In addition, despite being a penthouse with two large terraces, there was no connection between inside and outside,’ the studio continues. The new layout solves these problems by focusing on attention to detail, elegance and uniqueness. A good example of this is the flooring, for which large-format reformulated Dekton Rem with fewer veins was used, thus achieving a unique finish that enhances the sense of continuity.

Coderch’s work as a source of inspiration

According to the architects, ‘The building itself has been a great source of inspiration for us. The light, the surrounding façade, the colours and materials, the exterior wooden latticework that surrounds and protects it, etc. We wanted all this to be reflected in the house in some way, bringing the essence of the original project to the present.’ This is the case of the entrance, where a wooden framework that emulates the construction detail of the exterior separates the hall from a work area and directs us towards the kitchen. In this area, the same tones blend seamlessly with the grey and gold veining of Dekton Rem to form a large island. The hardness of the material makes it possible to cut directly on it without the knife scratching it or to place a hot pan on it without the risk of burning it.

Next to the island, in the same open-plan space, is the dining and living area which in turn connects to one of the terraces. Neutral colours such as grey, blue and white stand out here, with hints of dark tones, such as the aforementioned wood or a Dekton Eter fireplace unit that gives a distinctive look to the whole space. ‘We have worked with both Silestone and Dekton in different models, using them for applications in which everyone is more or less used to seeing and using them, such as flooring, bathrooms and worktops. But also, using them for unique custom-made features that match them, such as the fireplace itself, the flower beds…’ They are materials with almost endless possibilities.’

Small works of art

Perhaps one of the most impressive uses of Dekton in this home is the headboard in the guest bedroom, where the Liquid Shell colour becomes a kind of bas-relief with a warm, silky feel that is made even more striking with careful LED lighting.

Something similar occurs with the two Silestone Eternal Noir columns that frame the master bedroom and connect the range of light colours that characterise the public area and the dark tones that dominate the bathrooms, which are made entirely in this Silestone colour or in Dekton Eter and Silestone Charcoal Soapstone.

Finally, in another of the four bedrooms, an island washbasin in Silestone Blanco Zeus becomes a harmonious totem-like sculptural set.

Dekton, also for outdoors

The distinctive curved red brick façade designed by Coderch now contrasts with an impressive Dekton Rem wall which, thanks to its high resistance to temperature changes and the effects of UV rays, will remain unchanged for years to come. The same applies to the table tops on the terrace, which are clad in Dekton Sirius, a textured colour with green hints. Long live this architectural gem.

A bright flat combined with dark colours in Turkey

The architectural project for this flat in Turkey, designed by Pinar Çagatay Kizil from Pera Design İç Mimarlik, posed an ambitious challenge. The aim was to link two flats of the Kuzu Effect mixed-use building in Ankara. The result is a 105 square metre area with plenty of light that has been balanced by a design with dark colours.

One of the most striking aspects of the project was the creation of a virtual corridor with mirrors and partitions that allows spaces to flow, all aligned on a single façade. ‘The kitchen is the only area where we could not intervene, since the plumbing work had already been completed. We only enlarged the size of the island a little and gave it continuity by using Dekton Radium for the worktop, which is also found in the entrance and corridors of the house,’ the studio explains.

An aesthetically powerful material

This is how the architecture studio defines Dekton Radium – as a ‘striking and functional’ material. In their own words, it was chosen for cladding, flooring and corridors ‘because it is easy to clean, hygienic and has a great visual effect’. Being a high traffic area it was necessary to add a durable material that would give a consistent look and feel, something that is perfectly achieved with Radium. The rusty steel plate look of this colour also offers an aesthetic that blends perfectly with the ochre and brown used in the interior design of this flat.

A great bedroom

In the bedroom, a very exotic and attractive decorative solution was chosen using Prexury next to the headboard. Like an artistic canvas behind the bedside tables, the Prexury Wild Agate colour makes the space sparkle with its conglomerate of semi-precious stones in shades of turquoise and cream. Especially at night, as the pieces are backlit. ‘It is an incredibly elegant solution. The daytime look is very different from the night-time one, but both are striking. After the client approved the use of this colour, the entire design of the space was shaped around these slabs,’ the design studio explains. The result is a very personal and sophisticated space that receives warm, indirect lighting during rest time.

Design with character

This eight storey building, whose façade stands out in the landscape, is situated in the residential neighbourhood Aguas Férreas, in Lugo (Spain). For its design, “one of the basic premises of the developer, Dmanán Viviendas, was to design and execute an environmentally friendly building with an appearance that would stand out from its surroundings”, explains architect Patricia Montes from Aringal SL, the architecture and engineering firm in charge of the project. Therefore, from the very beginning of the project, Aringal’s work focused on combining the client’s objectives with the philosophy of its own company, which is very committed to incorporating sustainability into its projects.

The majestic appearance of the façades and their clean design gives this building a unique character. “The straight forms, terraces, window openings and materials used are its unique features”, says architect Patricia Montes. Two materials were combined in the façades of this building, creating a play of textures: Dekton Edora, a light grey shade with a minimalist look, and Corten steel.

Aguas férreas - MG 4184 1 scaled 263

The perfect match

“Dekton and Corten steel, a material whose colour changes continuously throughout the oxidation process due to the effect of light and atmospheric conditions, are combined in the façades, giving the building the distinctive final appearance sought by the planners“, says Montes. Both materials form a perfect combination in compliance with the Guía de Colores y Materiales de Galicia (Guide of colours and materials of Galicia). “In this way, they contribute to the proper integration of the building into the landscape and to a better quality of public space”. Dekton’s properties are also perfect to go hand in hand with Corten steel, a material that forms a surface oxide layer that could stain the materials used on the façade. “Something that does not happen with Dekton thanks to its zero porosity, a result of a sintering and ultra-compaction process exclusive to Cosentino”, says Montes.

Stylish shapes

According to the studio, orientation, views and location were decisive in the design of this unique building which houses a total of 32 flats. “The sunlight and the wide, clear views to the south-east determined the location of the building’s rooms, with the main rooms facing southeast and the sleeping areas facing north-west, opening onto the common space that gives access to the dwellings”. The south-east façade, with large terraces framed by Corten steel volumes running along the façade as an extension of the main rooms of the flats, opens up to the clear views of the valley. Meanwhile, the window openings on the north-west façade, also framed in Corten steel, are designed to optimise the capture of natural light.

A commitment to sustainability

The projects of this architecture firm are characterised by pursuing maximum sustainability and opting for Breeam certification with the aim of reducing the environmental impact on the surroundings. To this end, they apply passive design strategies, minimising the use of resources such as energy or water, and opting for the use of materials with a low environmental impact. “In this sense, the use of Dekton ensures thermal comfort thanks to its technical properties. It is also a material with a low level of VOCs and has an environmental product declaration (EPD)”, concludes Montes.

Spain at the Dubai Expo

Under the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, the 2020 World Expo finally opened its doors in Dubai on 1st October, almost a year later than planned due to the delay caused by the pandemic. The Expo will be attended by more than 200 participants and will run until 31st March 2022. The Spanish Pavilion addresses participation and sustainability as the main axes of its design thanks to the project ‘Personas lugares’ (People places), by the team of Atxu Amann, Andrés Cánovas and Nicolás Maruri (Temperaturas Extremas Arquitectos).

With a surface area of 5,800 m2, the Spanish Pavilion features a large square that integrates a series of conical volumes that stand out in the space like the chimneys of a thermal power plant, providing shade and ventilation thanks to their ventilated façades. For the interior spaces, passive bioclimatic systems have been used to support ventilation and cooling. Additionally, part of its cladding consists of photovoltaic panels and involves the recovery of 90% of the materials used.

Sustainable and versatile materials

Among the materials used in the design of the project, Dekton and Silestone stand out. Cosentino has provided a total of 3,000 m2 of its Dekton ultracompact surface for different uses as well as countertops and bars made from Silestone. Thus, the Spanish Pavilion becomes a real showroom of materials where the great versatility and variety, as well as the alignment with the values and themes of the Expo, are on display. Sustainability, resource efficiency, circular economy and innovation are the keys to Cosentino’s materials.

Large exhibition spaces

The floor of the main exhibition gallery, which houses the spectacular exhibition ‘El bosque de la Inteligencia’ (The Forest of Intelligence), designed in partnership by External Reference (Carmelo Zappulla) and Onionlab (Aleix Fernández), features a large format (155 x 140 cm) floor in Dekton Radium (700 m2), from the Industrial series. Radium, a colour with the appearance of rusted, acid-degraded steel plate, offers a design that blends perfectly with the ochre and brown shades of the creative proposal. The blue green forest stands out and welcomes visitors to this space whose theme is in line with the sustainable production of Radium, which incorporates up to 80% recycled materials in its composition.

Meanwhile, the stunning Dekton Halo Xgloss finish shines on the floor of the foyer, another of the iconic elements of this Pavilion, which hosts the art installation ‘Dinamo’, created by Daniel Canogar in collaboration with the composer Francisco López.

Dekton, the star of the flooring

The wall and floor cladding of the bathrooms, foyers and kitchen in the Basement Floor, are made of 4 mm thick Dekton slabs in Kreta colour. Meanwhile, the elegant graphite black shade of Dekton Domoos has been used on the exit ramp of the Pavilion, in combination with Dekton Zenith on the ventilated façade, which features vinyl prints representing the main themes of the Pavilion.

Finally, the flooring of the Main Restaurant on the first floor is made of Dekton Arga, from the Stonika series, which brings the sophistication of Taj Mahal quartzite, with a soft cream background crossed by brown and golden veins.

The versatility of Silestone in the restaurant area

As for Silestone, it displays all its beauty and performance in the main restaurant areas of the Pavilion. The iconic Silestone Blanco Zeus is the star of two spaces located on the first floor, the Main Restaurant, where it has been used for the bars and islands, and the Tapas Bar. Additionally, Silestone Eternal Charcoal Soapstone has been used on the counter of the restaurant area, La Gran Barra, as well as on the bathroom countertop of the Main Restaurant.

Quality for a high traffic area in Lisbon

With hundreds of people visiting one of the largest shopping centres in Portugal, the materials used in the flooring are paramount to ensure the durability of the design. That is the key to this project: a resistant and durable material such as Dekton that meets the needs in terms of design and functionality at one of the entrances of the Dolce Vita Amadora Shopping Centre, in Lisbon, Portugal.

Two architects from Broadway Malyan, one Spanish and one Portuguese, teamed up to design this high traffic area with open spaces exposed to the elements, which is located at one of the entrances to the shopping centre. The availability of Dekton in large format slabs made it the perfect material to create a seamless and expansive space to welcome visitors.

Large format

The colours chosen for the project, based on a neutral palette, enhance the sense of cleanliness and spaciousness in this high traffic area. Specifically, the colours chosen were Blanc Concrete, Vegha and Keon in large format slabs -some of them up to 3.20 x 1.40 m- and with a thickness of 12 mm. Thanks to its availability in large format slabs, Dekton is the perfect solution for designing large surface areas, minimising the number of joints and providing a more welcoming and functional design.

Three colours in harmony

While Blanc Concrete, an aged white with small veins in light grey and beige, adds luminosity, Vegha (from the Natural Collection) brings a natural feel with its textures inspired by limestone and sandstone. Finally, the light toned and bright Dekton Keon adds the finishing touch to the interplay of colours.

How to make the perfect house a reality

Combining beauty with organic, functional design was the aim of this project, which was destined to become the home of the owners’ dreams. Located in south Perth, Australia, with panoramic views of the city, this family house has been carefully designed by TLC Interior Design, who have managed to perfectly combine practical needs with a unique and contemporary design and appearance. To this end, the studio decided to use Dekton, “a material that was perfectly suited to the project and was exactly what the customer was looking for”, says Maria Bonomi, Director at TLC.

The design work was carried out by actively listening to the customer’s requests through a process of many conversations to satisfy their wishes. “The family had a very hands on approach during the whole construction process. We paid special attention to their vision and wishes during the meetings and were finally able to deliver what they wanted”, adds Bonomi.

Beauty from the Earth

The use of Dekton has made it possible to create organic and visually powerful spaces. Soke, which was used in the en suite bathroom, was one of the main colours of this project. “Its beauty and organic design created a stunning and seamless space”, explains Bonomi. “This colour gives a very natural touch to the space, as if it had been taken directly from the earth”, she adds. In general, the colour palette used seeks contrast between dark and light shades, generating very elegant spaces, rich in natural textures.

Sustainability, an added value

According to Bonomi, the advantages of using a material such as Dekton are an added value when it comes to developing your creativity in projects. “I feel that using this product allows me to be very creative and, at the same time, it is an excellent material thanks to its long life, durability and wide range of options and shades, suitable for both outdoor and indoor spaces”, explains Bonomi. “The variety of sizes and thicknesses available is also fantastic, as they can be used in many different applications”. Furthermore, Dekton is a carbon neutral product, which adds sustainability to all its technical advantages.

Large surfaces and small details

In this project, Dekton was used both for large surfaces, such as kitchen and bathroom worktops and cupboard and splashback claddings, as well as for small details in furniture, benches and the staircase floor. The result is a play of textures with a masterful visual consistency.

Huawei’s shop as a communal space

Located in Shenzen (China), Huawei’s global flagship is a complex with an area of 1,300 m2 where architecture is at the service of interaction and technology. Situated within the MixC World complex, the shop offers multiple areas to explore the brand’s latest innovations, experience its technology and, above all, share. Designed as a meeting point between the company and its customers, it is a perfect example of relational architecture which stands out for its communal, open spaces surrounded by a three-dimensional glass.

To complement this transparent, lightweight looking structure, Stone and Solutions fitters chose Dekton for the flooring because of its optimal performance on high traffic floors. In the words of CEO Richard Ma, “Dekton’s colour is elegant and at the same time futuristic, meeting the design objectives of this flagship”.

High traffic flooring

Dekton’s technical features and sustainable performance made it the perfect material to deal with the high traffic of a building of this kind. Furthermore, its availability in large format slabs makes it possible to minimise the number of joints, thus creating a greater sense of visual homogeneity. The colours chosen for the interior spaces were Dekton Keon and Dekton Danae. “Dekton was also chosen for the outdoor flooring because of its excellent performance and ease of maintenance, which provides peace of mind for final consumers”, says Richard Ma. While Dekton Kean brings brightness and a natural look to the contemporary and futuristic design of this innovative flagship, the beige shades of Dekton Danae add warmth and a cosy vibe. The combination of the two colours visually differentiates one area from another, enhancing a dynamic interior atmosphere where everything comes together.

Transparent and durable

Designed by architecture studio Saguez and Partners, this Huawei flagship is characterised by the use of advanced techniques such as curved 3D glass, which gives the project a wraparound look. “The 11 metre high glass panels provide spectacular views while ensuring resistance to typhoons“, explains the studio. Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered with panels made from recycled plastic bottles.

A customised design rich in textures

Located in the so-called Art Triangle, opposite the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Queen Sofia National Museum Art Centre), the hotel’s design unsurprisingly pays homage to Madrid’s most popular and musical side. Vibrant colours and a modern concept run throughout the rooms, suites and common areas, where different shades of Dekton and Silestone have been used for wall claddings, fittings and furnishings.

“We were surprised by the versatility of the materials and finishes, so we also used them for furniture, fittings and different equipment in a wide variety of thicknesses”, says Rockwell Group, the architecture studio responsible for the design of the new Hard Rock Hotel in Madrid.

An example of many applications

“We worked with Cosentino to create customised solutions for the interior spaces of the Hard Rock Hotel Madrid, such as anti-slip finishes, large format tiles, cement look for the outdoor spaces and a unique, customised, terrazzo-look finish for the room showers and some of the furniture, which is a main feature of the design”, say the architects. Specifically, Silestone was used for the cladding of bathrooms, worktops and table tops in the suites and for the bar worktops and table tops in the common areas. As for Dekton, it was used to clad the countertops of the bathrooms on the main floor, as well as for the flooring, steps and the swimming pool.”

Quality solutions

The chemistry between the studio and Cosentino was immediate and allowed Rockwell Group to meet the schedule and expectations of the customer, ASG Iberia. “Cosentino’s technical team was a constant source of support, as they studied the project from the beginning. They provided solutions in terms of quality and design”, explains the studio. Everything was taken care of in detail, creating personalised spaces that give the hotel its own identity, “such as the custom tile finish in the rooms that offered a durable solution with a beautiful design”, they say.

Inspiration from the classics

When it comes to choosing a durable, hardwearing, easy-clean, low-maintenance flooring solution for a large family home, Dekton is the ideal solution. For Michael Stephenson and the team at HG Design Solutions, who were tasked with designing the interior of this large Northumberland family home, Dekton Soke 8mm x 1420mm x 1420mm floor tiles were the perfect choice for the entire downstairs layout, including the open-plan kitchen-living area, dining room, utility and grand entrance hall.

Created in collaboration with Shaun Ramsey Construction, the project involved applying Dekton Soke flooring throughout the downstairs of the property and out into the garden area, creating a seamless finish and flow throughout the entire house and garden. Part of the Dekton Industrial Collection, the Soke tiles are inspired by classic cement floors with realistic veining and a statement grey finish that beautifully complements the traditional style of this home’s interior décor.

A surface perfect for daily routine

Highly resistant to UV rays, scratches, stains and thermal shock, Dekton is the ideal choice for homeowners looking for a durable, hardwearing solution for floors, worksurfaces and wall cladding both indoors and out. What’s more, carbon neutrality has been achieved for the entire life cycle of Dekton, so homeowners can rest assured that their surface of choice is sustainable and helps build a better future.

Dekton was also selected for the kitchen worksurfaces as well as for the table in the dining area that flows effortlessly from the open-plan kitchen-living space. Dekton in Olimpo was specified from PWS Worksurfaces and as part of the Stonika Xgloss Collection, it offers a luxurious Carrara marble look and feel with grey veining on top of a cool white background.

We introduced the client to Dekton and it was after he and his wife came to the Darlington centre to view the materials that they agreed on Soke for the flooring and Olimpo for the worksurfaces and table top, as these were the perfect choice in terms of durability and style.
