The beauty of marble to clad the façade of a hospital

DYS architecture chose Dekton for the stylish façade cladding of the Leon Judah Blackmore Pavilion at Vancouver General Hospital. The renovation of the building is a tribute to Leon Judah Blackmore, a Polish immigrant who made Canada his home and flourished as a businessman and real estate developer. In memory of his passion and contribution to the community, his philanthropic foundation donated $18.4 million to the hospital after his death.

Two years after that, the hospital’s Centenary Pavilion has been renovated and now bears his name as a tribute. The Vancouver-based Cosentino team collaborated on the project by supplying the Dekton Aura15 cladding material used on the façade that frames the entrance to the building.

The perfect match

Inspired by natural marbles such as Carrara and Calacatta, Aura15 was chosen for its elegance and technical features. Its white background crossed by grey veins blends perfectly with the grey edges of the façade and the silver signs with the name of the pavilion. The result is an elegant style that brings calm and balance to the hospital atmosphere, where Aura15 adds the sophistication of stone.

For many years to come

Thanks to its technical features, Dekton provides a highly durable material which requires no maintenance and is unaffected by wear and tear, UV rays, extreme temperatures and stains such as graffiti, making it ideal for the emergency entrance of this hospital, which is exposed daily to heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Therefore, although the initial specifications for the project called for marble, the ultra-compact Dekton surface was chosen for its high durability and ease of maintenance. Sustainability was also a plus when choosing it, as Dekton improves the energy efficiency of the building. Thus, Aura15 will be the face of the Leon Judah Pavilion for many years to come.

A demanding interior design

The interior designers of this home, located in a popular residential area on the outskirts of Madrid, faced a double challenge: on the one hand, they had to connect and give structural coherence to two independent semi-detached houses, transforming them into a single large family house with fewer but more spacious rooms; on the other hand, they had to bring new life to the interior appearance of the construction, creating an urban atmosphere inspired by New York lofts, something more in keeping with the needs of the owners, a young couple with several children and international tastes.

To do so, the space was redistributed allowing for a large open-plan floor of 100 m2 with part of its ceilings at double height. The staircase leading to the basement and the first floor was placed in the centre of the new room, which houses the living room, the dining room, a work area, the kitchen, a toilet and some additional relaxing and reading areas. Made from iron, wood and glass, it acts as an almost sculptural element that visually connects the various areas and, at the same time, helps to create different atmospheres depending on its use.

An industrial yet warm look dominates the décor, combining fine wood with natural finishes, brass, velvet, exposed brick and large-format floors reminiscent of concrete with metal accents, but with better technical performance in terms of resistance. The owners wanted an ‘all-terrain’ flooring solution that could withstand a lively social life (that would not get stained by a glass of wine, for example) and the demanding use of children (scratches, knocks, etc.). The interior designers recommended a safe bet, Dekton Nilium.

Nilium, the winning bet

Nilium, from Dekton’s Industrial series, is an ultra-compact colour inspired by a silver metal, with a subtle mix of white and grey shades that represents the beginning of the oxidation process of a material. Despite its delicate appearance, it has the same technical features of any other Dekton surface, such as high resistance to scratches, stains and temperature changes, which is particularly useful for the installation of underfloor heating.

When it comes to Dekton, thermal conductivity is better than with traditional products used with underfloor heating such as wood or linoleum, allowing for better heat transfer. Unlike these materials, the expansion is smaller and dimensional stability facilitates a perfect assembly, leaving a joint of only 2 mm, whatever the format used. This enhances the sense of visual continuity.

A very bright work area

For the kitchen, which has a strong visual connection to the exterior, they opted for a bright white, thus maximising natural light. For both the worktops of the wall unit and the island, they chose Blanco Zeus, an almost pure, energetic and timeless white from Silestone’s Mythology series. The same colour is used for the walls and the column in the window area, giving a cleaner and more unified look. The same goes for the shower in the guest bathroom.

Dekton and Scalea, the best allies

Both the perimeter wall of the garden and its paving and stairs were clad with a unique texture, a natural travertine from Scalea by Cosentino, Trav Romano. This stone, commonly used in the monuments of Ancient Rome, provides strength and elegance with a timeless finish that stands the test of time.

The elegant tones of this material continue in the swimming pool, but with a finish that is more resistant to the impact of water and the chemicals required for maintenance. In this space, Las 5 Glorias studio opted for Dekton Danae. Its large format reduces the number of joints, preventing the proliferation of bacteria and microorganisms. Furthermore, Dekton colours remain unaffected by exposure to sunlight and can be treated with Grip+ technology, which prevents slipping without compromising an aesthetically pleasing finish.

Richness of materials and textures

This 400 square metre home in Ankara, Turkey, features an exotic combination of textures and materials with lots of customisation. Designed by Damla Eryilmaz Ersoy of the E&E Mimarlik studio, the house reflects the traditional local style in combination with contemporary elements and quality materials. The result is a unique setting where the play of chiaroscuro and the richness of colour stand out.

Among the materials used in the project, Dekton by Cosentino stands out. A variety of Dekton colours have been used in multiple applications throughout the house. “The reason we wanted to use Dekton throughout the house is because of its durability and functionality”, explains the studio. “Creating solutions with a durable material for a family home was our starting point”, they underline.

Stunning floors

The kitchens in this home feature a variety of Dekton applications in different colours. On the one hand, Khalo was the colour chosen for the flooring in one of the kitchens. Inspired by Patagonia natural stone, Khalo was also used in the hallway, where it is combined with solid parquet. Thus, the cool colour of the stone and the warm effect of the wood blend together. “As our client was more of a classic style, we opted to use Dekton to create the illusion of a floating floor with a natural stone effect”, says the architect. Thanks to its polished finish, achieved through Dekton XGloss technology, Khalo features a spectacular shine that enhances its colourful chromatic structure. Intense blacks, subtle golds and tan browns give the different spaces a striking design.

Luxury bathrooms

In addition to using Liquid Sky and Laurent in a number of common areas, Aura 15, Galema and Domoos were used for the kitchen and bathroom worktops. Inspired by Calacatta and Carrara marbles, Aura 15, a unique shade with a natural veining, was used to clad the floor, walls and shower in one of the bathrooms. Galema, a green shade with brown veins, adds elegance and sophistication, while the elegant graphite black tone of Dekton Domoos has been used on the kitchen worktop, enhancing the contrasts in this room.

Custom worktops and furniture

Dekton’s versatility was also key when it came to using the material in the furniture. For example, Dekton Laurent, an elegant colour inspired by Port Laurent natural stone, was used for the TV unit, thus adding an interesting play of contrasts thanks to its golden veins against a dark background.

Updated style for 20th century architecture

The new corporate image of the metal recycling company Carprometal, based in the province of Lecco (Italy), can be seen from its very façade. This 1970s industrial building has a new look after the renovation carried out by the architect Ivo Pellegri, who has managed to give it a contemporary and forward-looking appearance.

The 200 square metres of ventilated façade with concealed DKT fixings have been made from Dekton by Cosentino, a material that has not only managed to update the aesthetics, but also to technologically implement the architecture, thanks to its durability, resistance and other technical features.

An aesthetically appealing colour

In particular, the architect chose Laos from all the Dekton colours available. With its dark tone and worn structure, Laos brings character and an industrial look with a contemporary and innovative side. Its grey veining and warm appearance make it a very attractive colour. Furthermore, its smooth matt finish blends perfectly into the Carprometal building with the glass windows, the white tones of the entrance and the company logo.

Dekton’s advantages

Dekton’s technical properties enable the design of ventilated façades, a high-performance construction solution for creating strong and safe structures. This type of façade saves energy and protects the building from water leaks. This, together with the technical advantages of Dekton, provides greater sustainability and durability to this type of project. Thanks to its resistance to freezing and colour stability over time, the slabs require much less maintenance than other materials.

The perfect design for a multi-purpose restaurant in Turkey

The concept of Hayal Kahvesi, a restaurant chain in Turkey, goes beyond serving lunch and dinner, as it turns into a concert hall at night. And in keeping with this multi-disciplinary concept, one of its premises in Istanbul has been refurbished. ‘During the day it is a good place to eat and to meet. At night, it turns into a club-lounge,’ explain the architects and interior designers working with Tanya Ildiroğlu and her studio Margo Interior and Product Design on the project.

The entire design revolves around both experiences and tries to meet the needs of the customers. ‘We are organic beings, who need food to nourish the body and music to nourish the soul. We live in one of the largest metropolises and have to deal with a lot of hustle and bustle. Therefore, one of the objectives was for the interior design to be able to restore all of the negativity of the day and turn it into something positive,’ the designers explain.

Project challenges

Thus, from the vibrant and eye-catching variety of colours chosen to the lighting that accompanies both stages (day and night), everything revolves around the show, be it culinary or musical. In fact, one of the challenges was sound insulation, as the premises are located on the ground floor of a residential building. The potential traffic at this venue was another key consideration when designing a facility that could withstand heavy footfall and require easy maintenance. ‘This was why we chose Cosentino,’ the studio explains. ‘This place faces heavy traffic and we needed to keep all surfaces in good condition, as on day one, with no stains or wear and tear.’

Second life

The main challenge of this house is to dialogue with its own site, an iconic building of national architecture designed by the Catalan architect José Antonio Coderch in the mid-1960s. The Girasol building, on the corner of Madrid’s exclusive Ortega Gasset and Lagasca streets, is characterised by a masterful use of natural light. Each house rotates on its axis towards noon and this rotation is calculated according to the most favourable positions of the sun throughout the day and the different seasons of the year.

‘The owners – a young couple who live with their friendly beagle dog named Milka – wanted to respect its essence as much as possible, maintaining the brightness of the spaces, but with a larger and more continuous layout. They asked for the best quality and specially designed materials to be used, such as those by Cosentino. They were looking for modern and functional finishes, but at the same time they wanted to create a cosy space,’ explains Domus Arquitectura studio, in charge of giving this flat a second life.

‘The initial layout, typical of the period when it was build, was irregular, made up of suspended ceilings that reduced the usable heights and fragmented spaces that lost part of their potential. In addition, despite being a penthouse with two large terraces, there was no connection between inside and outside,’ the studio continues. The new layout solves these problems by focusing on attention to detail, elegance and uniqueness. A good example of this is the flooring, for which large-format reformulated Dekton Rem with fewer veins was used, thus achieving a unique finish that enhances the sense of continuity.

Coderch’s work as a source of inspiration

According to the architects, ‘The building itself has been a great source of inspiration for us. The light, the surrounding façade, the colours and materials, the exterior wooden latticework that surrounds and protects it, etc. We wanted all this to be reflected in the house in some way, bringing the essence of the original project to the present.’ This is the case of the entrance, where a wooden framework that emulates the construction detail of the exterior separates the hall from a work area and directs us towards the kitchen. In this area, the same tones blend seamlessly with the grey and gold veining of Dekton Rem to form a large island. The hardness of the material makes it possible to cut directly on it without the knife scratching it or to place a hot pan on it without the risk of burning it.

Next to the island, in the same open-plan space, is the dining and living area which in turn connects to one of the terraces. Neutral colours such as grey, blue and white stand out here, with hints of dark tones, such as the aforementioned wood or a Dekton Eter fireplace unit that gives a distinctive look to the whole space. ‘We have worked with both Silestone and Dekton in different models, using them for applications in which everyone is more or less used to seeing and using them, such as flooring, bathrooms and worktops. But also, using them for unique custom-made features that match them, such as the fireplace itself, the flower beds…’ They are materials with almost endless possibilities.’

Small works of art

Perhaps one of the most impressive uses of Dekton in this home is the headboard in the guest bedroom, where the Liquid Shell colour becomes a kind of bas-relief with a warm, silky feel that is made even more striking with careful LED lighting.

Something similar occurs with the two Silestone Eternal Noir columns that frame the master bedroom and connect the range of light colours that characterise the public area and the dark tones that dominate the bathrooms, which are made entirely in this Silestone colour or in Dekton Eter and Silestone Charcoal Soapstone.

Finally, in another of the four bedrooms, an island washbasin in Silestone Blanco Zeus becomes a harmonious totem-like sculptural set.

Dekton, also for outdoors

The distinctive curved red brick façade designed by Coderch now contrasts with an impressive Dekton Rem wall which, thanks to its high resistance to temperature changes and the effects of UV rays, will remain unchanged for years to come. The same applies to the table tops on the terrace, which are clad in Dekton Sirius, a textured colour with green hints. Long live this architectural gem.

Dekton is the star of the new AXA building’s façade

The new building of the AXA insurance company in Northern Ireland boasts a contemporary façade with a combination of materials and textures. Designed by architects Tim Robinson and Aron Ramage of GM Design Associates and installed by Heron Brothers, the façade brings together design with efficiency and sustainability. The chosen surface was Dekton, not only because of its design, but also because of the technical advantages it offers for this type of application, making it the ideal material for façades.

“I was familiar with Dekton as I had seen it in the Cosentino Belfast showroom, as well as in some Heron Brothers projects, and it has always impressed me. As an ultracompact surface, it suits façades perfectly. The fact that it is resistant to harsh weather conditions and UV rays means that its colour will not fade with prolonged exposure to the sun”, explains Michael Connolly, Commercial Director at Heron Brothers and head of the project.

A trendy colour

The façade of the new building features a variety of materials, among which Dekton Strato, in perfect combination with the glazed areas and the aluminium cladding, stands out. Although ventilated façades are considered the best option in terms of sustainability and efficiency, the planning permission did not allow for a façade clad entirely with Dekton. The solution was to choose Strato, a grey shade with darker particles inspired by cement. “I met with the Cosentino team in Belfast and went through five or six different colours”, explains Michael Connolly. “Nayla, Lunar, Kreta and Keon were some of them. But in the end we thought that Strato, with its classic grey cement look, would be the ideal choice”. As for the anchoring system, from the beginning of the project it was agreed to use the Nvelope system for concealed fastening. KEIL KH anchors were used for the rear fastening of the Dekton panels.

A highly durable material

UV, frost, thaw and stain resistance. These are just some of the features that make Dekton a perfect material for outdoors and guarantee its colour stability. This was precisely one of the concerns that Michael Connolly posed to Darrel O’Kane, manager at Cosentino Belfast, when choosing the cladding material for the façade of the building. “Traditional materials always need maintenance, either to keep them clean or to repaint them in a couple of years”, he explains from his experience with other Heron Brothers projects. “When we looked into Dekton, we realised that this durable surface was perfect for this project”, affirms Connolly.

“The fact that it is resistant to harsh weather conditions, scratches and UV rays means that its colour will not fade with prolonged exposure to the sun. Furthermore, Dekton is a carbon neutral product for its entire life cycle. It is good for everyone!”.

A sustainable façade

“In addition to all of its technical advantages, Dekton is a carbon neutral product for its entire life cycle”, adds Michael Connolly. This means added value for any architectural project. Furthermore, it guarantees a long lifetime, which is also a plus in terms of sustainability, as the façade will not scratch or crack and therefore no intense maintenance will be required.

A bright flat combined with dark colours in Turkey

The architectural project for this flat in Turkey, designed by Pinar Çagatay Kizil from Pera Design İç Mimarlik, posed an ambitious challenge. The aim was to link two flats of the Kuzu Effect mixed-use building in Ankara. The result is a 105 square metre area with plenty of light that has been balanced by a design with dark colours.

One of the most striking aspects of the project was the creation of a virtual corridor with mirrors and partitions that allows spaces to flow, all aligned on a single façade. ‘The kitchen is the only area where we could not intervene, since the plumbing work had already been completed. We only enlarged the size of the island a little and gave it continuity by using Dekton Radium for the worktop, which is also found in the entrance and corridors of the house,’ the studio explains.

An aesthetically powerful material

This is how the architecture studio defines Dekton Radium – as a ‘striking and functional’ material. In their own words, it was chosen for cladding, flooring and corridors ‘because it is easy to clean, hygienic and has a great visual effect’. Being a high traffic area it was necessary to add a durable material that would give a consistent look and feel, something that is perfectly achieved with Radium. The rusty steel plate look of this colour also offers an aesthetic that blends perfectly with the ochre and brown used in the interior design of this flat.

A great bedroom

In the bedroom, a very exotic and attractive decorative solution was chosen using Prexury next to the headboard. Like an artistic canvas behind the bedside tables, the Prexury Wild Agate colour makes the space sparkle with its conglomerate of semi-precious stones in shades of turquoise and cream. Especially at night, as the pieces are backlit. ‘It is an incredibly elegant solution. The daytime look is very different from the night-time one, but both are striking. After the client approved the use of this colour, the entire design of the space was shaped around these slabs,’ the design studio explains. The result is a very personal and sophisticated space that receives warm, indirect lighting during rest time.

Caffè Tarentum reopens its doors

In the Italian city of Taranto, Apulia, there is a legendary meeting place that is now coming back to life after the renovation carried out by the architect Lello Nigro. Caffè Tarentum is a historic café restaurant that has been run by the same family for 35 years. The owners want to freshen up this place that offers coffee, pastries and home-made ice cream.

This renovation, carried out by Scrimieri Lab under the supervision of Nigro, aimed to create a warm, welcoming, restrained but elegant space. Materials such as Canaletto Walnut, Dekton by Cosentino and an array of natural matt lacquered finishes have been used to add a sophisticated and very comfortable character to the café.

Dark marble with an elegant soul

Dekton Kelya was chosen for the bar top, tables, wall cladding and the background of the brand logo. The front band of the worktop also runs along the main hall, and continues to clad the service access doors in this stylish colour. Inspired by dark marble with light veins, Kelya gives a special and personal touch to this space.

The perfect material for a café restaurant

Keyla is the perfect material for surfaces such as the tables and bar of this café restaurant, as it ensures durability and a flawless appearance. It is highly scratch and stain resistant, easy to maintain and withstands high temperatures without damaging its surface.

Casa Decor, the discovery that shaped a house

The owners of this house were very clear when they visited Casa Decor 2020: they wanted a kitchen with the White Macaubas quartzite by Sensa and they wanted their home to be designed by Gärna Studio.

The couple, with 3 independent children, needed an open plan home with spaces that flow and communicate with each other. A cosy house to welcome their children and grandchildren and spend time together. These were their requests to Laura and Enrique of Gärna Studio, an architecture and interior design studio that the couple already knew well thanks to other projects that the architects and designers had carried out.

The project had two clear objectives: to create versatile spaces that could be used at different times depending on the needs; and to achieve a sense of unity in its design, with little variation in terms of elements and textures. To achieve this, Laura and Enrique looked for materials that were easy to fit and that would serve as a guiding thread between the different spaces. “We also played with different ceiling heights and lighting to achieve a greater sense of spaciousness and functionality, creating a welcoming atmosphere”, says Enrique García, architect and project manager at Gärna Studio.

The kitchen was the key to achieving a welcoming home. “They stressed the importance of the kitchen as a family meeting place to chat and share, and the desire to have an island to sit around while preparing meals”.

The couple visited the Casa Decor 2020 exhibition in search of inspiration and it was there that they fell in love with White Macaubas, the quartzite by Sensa that Gärna Studio had used in their ‘Narciso’ project. Being a natural stone, they were initially unsure about its use in the kitchen, but Laura and Enrique explained the benefits of Sensa’s anti-stain protection, which offers the possibility to enjoy the most unique designs of nature in every space of the house. Thus, this quartzite became the absolute protagonist of the kitchen, covering the central island and part of the floor.

Natural beauty

For the bathroom in the master bedroom they also opted for Sensa. In this case, the colour chosen was Taj Mahal, an off-white background crossed by soft brown veins. The bathroom countertop, together with the surrounding elements, such as the wallpaper with plant motifs or the wooden furniture, create a pleasant feeling of contact with nature.

The customers wanted a house that was modern but also timeless, so they went for a refined, architectural design with straight lines, based on natural materials such as stone and wood, to which they added powerful and colourful works of art. “Studying the best materials to meet the specific needs of this family made the project very enriching”, says Gärna Studio.
