Apple Cotai Centre Store
Foster + Partners
Macau, China
Apple´s brand new flagship store, inaugurated last 29th June in Macau, lightens its surroundings with a paper-lantern like façade filtered by a bamboo layer.

The design of this space wraps up a series of very special projects involving collaboration between the British firm Foster + Partners and Jonathan Ive, Chief designer at the technology giant. That the project landed in Macau is evidence of the major development going on there as a result of the huge bridge that will in few months connect it to Hong Kong. Apple’s new point of sale is conceived as a space withdrawn from the exterior world,  a place in which to feel disconnected from the busy commercial center of the Chinese city. This atmosphere is possible thanks to an innovative facade wrapped around the upper part of the large central void. It filters light entering the store by day and emanating from it at night. The translucent enclosure is made of a composite of glass and very fine stone panels arranged in alternation to obtain a surface of texturized colour. The homogeneous warm light that the facade gives off is accompanied by a bamboo grove that rises from the center of the hall to the skylight crowning the deep atrium. In this way, the lower level is enclosed between two layers of plants that strike a contrast with the cutting-edge technology of the items on sale.
