Huawei’s shop as a communal space

Located in Shenzen (China), Huawei’s global flagship is a complex with an area of 1,300 m2 where architecture is at the service of interaction and technology. Situated within the MixC World complex, the shop offers multiple areas to explore the brand’s latest innovations, experience its technology and, above all, share. Designed as a meeting point between the company and its customers, it is a perfect example of relational architecture which stands out for its communal, open spaces surrounded by a three-dimensional glass.

To complement this transparent, lightweight looking structure, Stone and Solutions fitters chose Dekton for the flooring because of its optimal performance on high traffic floors. In the words of CEO Richard Ma, “Dekton’s colour is elegant and at the same time futuristic, meeting the design objectives of this flagship”.

High traffic flooring

Dekton’s technical features and sustainable performance made it the perfect material to deal with the high traffic of a building of this kind. Furthermore, its availability in large format slabs makes it possible to minimise the number of joints, thus creating a greater sense of visual homogeneity. The colours chosen for the interior spaces were Dekton Keon and Dekton Danae. “Dekton was also chosen for the outdoor flooring because of its excellent performance and ease of maintenance, which provides peace of mind for final consumers”, says Richard Ma. While Dekton Kean brings brightness and a natural look to the contemporary and futuristic design of this innovative flagship, the beige shades of Dekton Danae add warmth and a cosy vibe. The combination of the two colours visually differentiates one area from another, enhancing a dynamic interior atmosphere where everything comes together.

Transparent and durable

Designed by architecture studio Saguez and Partners, this Huawei flagship is characterised by the use of advanced techniques such as curved 3D glass, which gives the project a wraparound look. “The 11 metre high glass panels provide spectacular views while ensuring resistance to typhoons“, explains the studio. Inside, the walls and ceilings are covered with panels made from recycled plastic bottles.

The perfect material for 1,800 people

The new stadium, financed by the Canadian Simon Fraser University and its students, is designed to offer a completely new university experience. The stadium is home to the sports teams of this Richmond-based university and its refurbishment was intended to extend its capacity and improve the overall quality of the facilities. Athletes, students and the entire educational community can now enjoy new spaces thanks to a design that includes a new structure with a capacity for 1,800 people and a large roof with a contemporary design. In its construction, Perkins + Will Architects used two Dekton colours, Domoos and Spectra. Dekton was also used for the columns throughout the stadium, providing elegance and, at the same time, a number of technical advantages. The stadium is designed to be visited by thousands of people a year and to withstand the extreme weather conditions of the area, from the hottest summers to the coldest and wettest winters. For this reason, the Dekton surface was the perfect solution for this sports facility.

A new era for the campus

The new SFU Stadium is shaping up to be a key venue for campus life at the SFU, the only Canadian university competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Hence the importance of transforming this space into a first class venue to support the university athletes and teams that will train and compete there. The impact of this project, to which students contributed more than €8.5 million, results in a top quality sports facility. Facilities include a lobby, accessible toilets, media and broadcasting facilities, integrated sound system, VIP suite and coaches’ booths.

Pure white for a very spiritual façade

The Shilin district, in northern Taipei (Taiwan), is home to a new Christian church. The church, with its white, minimalist façade, stands out in the urban environment as a timeless symbol thanks to its minimalist architecture with modern influences. Designed by HCW Architects & Associates in collaboration with Mikael Kaul Architect INC, it is the largest Bread of Life church in the country. Its multiple spaces were especially designed to accommodate all kinds of events, from Sunday masses to weddings, seminars, lectures and workshops. In accordance with its spiritual use, the studio proposed a façade with simple lines and a strong contemporary character full of symbolism.

The colours chosen for this harmonious and striking façade were Zenith, Ariane and Strato, three pure white Dekton colours that blend into the façade with large glass windows that flood the interiors with light. In the words of architect Hsieh Chung Yang, “we chose Dekton not only for its extreme hardness, durability and anti-scratch surface, but also for its self-cleaning properties and stain resistance”.

A building looking towards heaven

An abstract cloud like structure floats on the rooftop of the building, emphasising the spiritual character of the building. “The perforated cloud, playing with the different shades, creates amazing reflections on the façade”, says the architect. It is the icing on the cake of this architecture based on modern minimalism, which uses white as a “symbol of sanctity”, he further says. Zenith and Ariane were used for the large façade panels, while Strato was used in small quantities for the external sills. The overall result elevates the architectural design to a deeper emotional level, connecting the structure with the building’s purpose.

Entente cordiale

The owners of this house, located in a privileged position near Madrid, had been living in the USA for many years. When they came back to Spain, they were very clear about three things: they wanted a house in which black tones stood out, both in the architecture and interior design, that reflected the North American volumetric codes and that was very well interconnected. They needed the architect, interior designer and landscape designer teamed up to give meaning to the project. “As they had been living abroad for a long time, they didn’t know exactly who would be able to meet their demands, so they decided to launch a tender”, explains interior designer Raúl Martins.

“Although we were given total freedom to propose different solutions, they were strict about the colour. Obviously, such requirements can make a project more complicated, but also much more interesting. I believe that an architect or interior designer has a duty to be empathetic with the customers and to look for the best solutions to meet their needs”. In the search for these solutions, the collaboration with architect Francisco Noguera was key. The design of the space was complicated at an architectural level, as it was necessary to minimise the impact of a black exterior in a sunny city like Madrid, but also at a volumetric level.

“It was very enriching working with Francisco. I love the architects’ view of scale, the importance they give to finishes and their concern for the interaction between materials”, says Raúl. This was especially important in the common areas of the house, where the architecture is sometimes more similar to that of a hotel, with ceilings of up to 5 metres. “The works were difficult. It took two and a half years to complete. But the result was better than the owners expectations. They were delighted with the integration between the shape of the building itself, which has a surface area of 2,200 m2, the interior design and the landscaping work by Fernando Pozuelo, which gave context to the whole”.

Large proportions, large formats

The large open areas required a large-format floor to emphasise the generous proportions. It also needed to be very hard-wearing and feature a range of black tones and subtle veins. “Given all these limitations, I decided to visit Cosentino City Madrid. As always, the team of advisors helped me to find a selection of samples suitable for the project”, he explains. They finally opted for a floor in Dekton Keranium, which with its 320 x 144 cm format and matt finish, achieved the desired effect.

The high resistance to scratches and stains of this ultra-compact surface, together with the possibility of a clean installation and minimal joints, made Dekton the most suitable material for a living area designed to welcome guests.

A customised design rich in textures

Located in the so-called Art Triangle, opposite the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Queen Sofia National Museum Art Centre), the hotel’s design unsurprisingly pays homage to Madrid’s most popular and musical side. Vibrant colours and a modern concept run throughout the rooms, suites and common areas, where different shades of Dekton and Silestone have been used for wall claddings, fittings and furnishings.

“We were surprised by the versatility of the materials and finishes, so we also used them for furniture, fittings and different equipment in a wide variety of thicknesses”, says Rockwell Group, the architecture studio responsible for the design of the new Hard Rock Hotel in Madrid.

An example of many applications

“We worked with Cosentino to create customised solutions for the interior spaces of the Hard Rock Hotel Madrid, such as anti-slip finishes, large format tiles, cement look for the outdoor spaces and a unique, customised, terrazzo-look finish for the room showers and some of the furniture, which is a main feature of the design”, say the architects. Specifically, Silestone was used for the cladding of bathrooms, worktops and table tops in the suites and for the bar worktops and table tops in the common areas. As for Dekton, it was used to clad the countertops of the bathrooms on the main floor, as well as for the flooring, steps and the swimming pool.”

Quality solutions

The chemistry between the studio and Cosentino was immediate and allowed Rockwell Group to meet the schedule and expectations of the customer, ASG Iberia. “Cosentino’s technical team was a constant source of support, as they studied the project from the beginning. They provided solutions in terms of quality and design”, explains the studio. Everything was taken care of in detail, creating personalised spaces that give the hotel its own identity, “such as the custom tile finish in the rooms that offered a durable solution with a beautiful design”, they say.

Stronger than concrete

The initial project for this development built by the Palomera company in Santander (Spain) envisaged that part of the façade would be made of concrete. However, after considering various possibilities, the architects decided on a finish with similar characteristics in terms of aesthetics, but with greater resistance to temperature changes and unfavourable weather conditions, such as Dekton Protek Slim. The large dimensions of this material – with formats up to 3,200 x 1,440 mm – made it possible to create an image very similar to the one they had in mind.

The position of the floors of these six family houses varies on the site in order to better integrate the complex into the landscape and ensure perfect natural lighting, which reveals the exterior cladding. According to Be2Arq Arquitectura y Diseño, ‘working with a material that is virtually unchanged, more durable and requires little maintenance was a very rewarding experience.’

Residencial Gardens Valdenoja - MG 5021 1 317

More design

The versatility of Dekton made it possible to work with pieces of different sizes, alternating large and small formats. In this way, it was possible to fit perfectly with the volumes of the building and generate a more interesting design, with greater movement, flexibility and lightness.

Old World textures

‘Our architect, Michael Cardinale, wanted to reinterpret the style of typical European villas in a contemporary manner and planned to use marble as the main feature. However, he quickly dismissed this idea. The owners of the Izvor House are a big family with a very active social life and needed a much stronger material’, Kylie Petrou, Project Manager at Axon Homes, explains.

They found the right product in Cosentino’s materials: an extremely compact quartzite with unique stain resistant protection and a classic pattern. Sensa White Macaubas also fitted perfectly with the other finishes they wanted to use, such as walnut veneer, terracotta accessories and Japanese tiles in olive green or Mediterranean blue.

Axon Homes - COSENTINO AXON 005 1 378

A surface that withstands wear and tear

The owners of this home are keen cooks and love having family and friends over. Therefore, one of their main demands was that the work surfaces should have the best possible performance in terms of scratch and heat resistance. ‘They love to put hot pots, pans or baking trays directly on the worktop or on the table for serving’, Petrou explains. This challenge was met thanks to Dekton, with the Domoos colour for the work area and unit doors and the Uyuni colour for the dining room table. For the island, they chose Sensa White Macaubas quartzite.

In the outdoor cooking area, they also opted for Dekton because of its high resistance to the sun’s rays and temperature changes. In this case, Domoos was used both for the units and the worktop alongside Bromo for the table top.

The ‘Wow’ effect

‘Without a doubt, two of our favourite images involve the contrast created in the kitchen, with the dark Dekton background and the Sensa White Macaubas island, and the impressive interplay of shapes produced by this same cladding on the balustrades leading to the living room and on the sides of the five-metre-high fireplace’, Axon Homes explains.

This project consisted of a carefully selected set design, where the small details help to improve the visual appearance, giving a more orderly image. Every element counts and enhances the rest. This is the case of Dekton Domoos that frame the bathroom tiles and shape the washbasins, creating an overall clean and relaxed atmosphere with their refined design.

The same care can be seen in the design of the staircase, where Michael Cardinale combined Dekton Domoos treads with a Sensa White Macaubas riser for an elegant sense of lightness.

Dekton Domoos and Uyuni were also used in other features, such as the worktop of the TV sideboard, the office table and the furniture and surfaces in the laundry room, bringing strength and sobriety to these spaces.

A fresh, new look for an iconic building

The heart of downtown Orlando is being rejuvenated thanks to the redevelopment of the busy Lake Eola Park area, a mixed area with everything from office buildings to trendy restaurants, bars, shops and cultural activities such as farmers’ markets, art exhibitions and boat rides on the lake. The redevelopment works include the Eola Centre, an iconic 1980s building on the corner of Robinson and Rosalind Streets.

The aim of this project was to achieve a fresh, contemporary design by creating a new perimeter wall combining the structure itself with metal details, signage and lighting. For this purpose, HKS Architects and S&ME Landscape Architects planned a partially buried wall surrounded by landscaped areas. This design required the use of a long-lasting cladding material such as Dekton, which is able to withstand the constant humidity of the irrigation system, car fumes, the intense Florida sun or the possible erosion caused by gardening machinery.

Lake Eola Park - DSC04934 Edit min 439

Collaboration, the key to success

Prior to the cladding installation, the Cosentino team built a sample wall and made countless sketches to ensure that the LED lights, metal railing and all other necessary architectural features could be seamlessly integrated into the Dekton Danae cladding. The colour Danae was chosen because it blends in perfectly with the tones of the building, whose columns are also clad in the same material.

Cosentino’s experts teamed up with HKS Architects, S&ME Landscape Architects, developer Highwood Properties, general contractor Clancy & Theys and fitter International Flooring at every stage of the project. The Cosentino team also worked closely with Ardex, the company supplying the adhesives for the installation of Dekton, and advised the architect and fitter to ensure that the material was perfectly installed. This project is a perfect example of the importance of collaboration and the many possibilities that Dekton offers in landscape architecture projects.

The value of custom design

Nina Magon’s new space in Houston has transformed into the exclusive meeting place for lovers of luxury and design. Located on the first floor of Texas’ leading jewellery shop, Zadok Jewelers, the designer has opted for a sophisticated interior design very much in keeping with the aesthetic of her NM Lifestyle and Pavus collections, which include custom furniture, lighting, carpets and tableware.

To do this, Magon used an eye-catching customised natural stone from Cosentino in its distinctive emerald green colour to clad parts of the walls and the background of her logo, and combined it with the dynamism of Dekton Liquid Embers.

The NM Lounge is designed not only to showcase her pieces, but also to host small private events such as VIP dinners for jewellery brands or for Zadok Jewelers’ customers to relax and enjoy their time in the shop. An elegant, almost monochromatic space in shades of green is complemented by Dekton Liquid Embers wall cladding in a beautiful magma colour with an attractive wavy texture.

Unexpected arches

Magon wanted the room’s decoration to be dynamic and striking, but with a design that would last over time, while adding depth and interest to the furniture, and going beyond a mere display of products. To achieve this, she used a series of customised arches taking advantage of the versatility and durability of Cosentino materials.

The perfect material for a bold vision

Nothing makes a statement like a large wall cladded in Dekton, and that’s exactly what we see at Nippon Express’ Itasca offices. Kasey Kluxdal, Senior Design Architect for Harris Architects had a vision in mind and presented the Cosentino team with a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and together they explored the many Dekton colors, textures, and thicknesses that could bring her vision to life.

The decision was clear, Dekton Bergen was the perfect color for Nippon Express’ reception area. From the Stonika Collection, Dekton Bergen is inspired by natural Portobello marble with beautiful grayish veins creating sculptural patterns on an off-white base. With its high-gloss print, 4 mm thickness, and large panels, Dekton Bergen transformed the reception area of this global Japanese logistics company.

“The architect fell in love with Dekton Bergen and was impressed with the large format look. This was the key to making the project a success”

The magic is in the bookmatch

When cladding this two-story wall, it was imperative that the bookmatch be perfect. Cosentino and the installer, Stone Systems of Chicago, worked hand-in-hand to bookmatch the large Dekton panels to create a seamless statement wall in the reception area and behind the two-story stairwell. Dekton’s large-format panels and tight grout joints also greatly contribute to the visually continuous aesthetic of the wall and the thin 4 mm thickness allows the wall area to be as narrow as possible.

This logistic giant’s Itasca office is as unique as it is unforgettable. Dekton Bergen adorns the walls and is the first thing people see when they step inside – talk about making a good first impression.
