Inbetween Pavillion

Ponto Atelier
São Miguel Island, Portugal

A temporary pavilion to create a collective space at a time when we still may not get together.

The pavilion – designed and built during a time of major changes – pursues a simple geometry. A 20x20 m square with an entrance at each of the four corners encloses a room which is open-air, letting earth and sky meet. The perimeter of the wooden strcuture organizes a rigorous grid where we expect to be welcomed by vegetation, but instead find 25 volcanic rocks on a blanket of black dust.

The construction surrounding this ‘volcanic carpet’ is executed with local timber and draws inspiration from structures used for drying corn or tobacco. Time is another component of the building process; the wood – burned in order to create a black atmosphere – will disappear gradually so that all the attention goes to the rocks brought in from nearby volcanoes, imprinting a new time in this territory.
