Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
AZAZ Architects has designed a coffee shop for the Elixir Bunn chain where traditional Saudi Arabian values blend with the modern.
Elixir Bunn, the famous chain of coffee shops in Saudi Arabia, commissioned the firm AZAZ Architects to design its new spot in Riyadh. The project sought to create an atmosphere in accord with the values and the tradition of the place, and in this way further seal the reputation of Elixir Bunn products and their link to the region. Coffee production in Arabia dates back to times prior to the formation of the kingdom, and has developed into a thriving industry increasingly rooted in society as a cultural asset.
Reflecting on this evolution, the architects conceived a modern temple giving coffee consumers a near-spiritual experience. A central pillar organizes the space in a concentric layout. Large Islamic-style arches rise from the column radially and are crowned with clay finishes. The result is an atmosphere of spirituality. But materials like terrazzo and an imposing spiral staircase give a modern tone in contrast with elements of traditional design.
