Large-scale passive building

The Innovation Technological Center (ITC) is a newly built building located within the AEC Illuminazione headquarters, where research and development work is carried out. The building has a surface area of 26,500 m2 and was designed by the Milanese architectural studio SBGA Blengini Ghirardelli, who based their design on pure, simple geometric lines. The heart of the project, known as “The Lab”, is formed by the intersection of two parallelepipeds in which, over an area of 3,000 m2, technicians and researchers work together in a space designed to encourage collaboration.

One of the most eye-catching features of this project is its northern façade. This façade, made of large-format Dekton Domoos slabs and with a surface area of 1,100 m2, is one of the largest Dekton façades in Europe. The cladding was installed on the ventilated façade using a Keil fixed anchoring system. The choice of material was based on the company’s sustainability criteria and the purpose of insulating the building from high temperatures.

Dekton Domoos is a finish from the Solid Collection. It is a dark, almost black shade, available in large format slabs (320cm x 144cm), which is ideal for outdoors and large surfaces and perfect for a ventilated façade.

In line with the company’s philosophy

The ITC building is the best example of AEC’s philosophy of innovation and automation. AEC’s business vision and investment decisions continually seek innovative solutions in the lighting of public spaces. The building creates an interesting relationship between the exterior and interior. The landscape outside serves as inspiration to create a relaxing atmosphere. The double-height entrance and the glazed façade provide a light-filled space where natural light prevails. Everything was designed with the wellbeing of employees in mind and nothing here is reminiscent of a traditional factory concept.

The building was built on three levels. On the ground and first floors, where tests and experiments are carried out under extreme environmental conditions, a series of double and triple height laboratories were set up from the mezzanine floor, from which it is possible to safely monitor the tests. The research offices are on the third floor. The clean, geometric lines continue on this floor. The building is completed by a skylight roof that brings light into the centre of the workspace. The technical systems and photovoltaic panels are located above the roof, concealed by a cornice, rounding off the project.

The most innovative and sustainable materials combined with avant-garde architecture have come together to create the ITC, which has become AEC’s best calling card.

Dekton Odin, a unique look and feel of wood that stands the test of time

The Ette hotel is a newly built hotel in Kissimmee, Florida, USA. There are several Disney parks in the same city. As a result, the hotel welcomes thousands of tourists every year. This 126-room hotel attracts mainly families who, after their visits to the parks, make the pool area the center of the hotel’s social life.

Both the architect and the project developer were clear about the properties of the material to be used in the construction and the façade of the pool area. They wanted a finish with the texture of natural wood which, at the same time, would blend in with the façade. Furthermore, the material needed to withstand the wear and tear of a busy area, sudden changes in temperature and even possible damage in a hurricane-prone state like Florida. In addition to the technical specifications, design played a key role: both the architect and the developer wanted the look and feel of wood for its beauty and warmth.

Dekton Odin stood out from the start as a very interesting option: firstly, because of its extraordinary strength and hardness which, together with its hazelnut colour, perfect for the modern and functional style of the hotel, provided the desired combination of strength and design; and secondly, because it also met the necessary requirements for installation with the Elemex Ceramitex® Facade system.

A façade to withstand Florida’s humidity

Florida’s unique weather conditions demanded a façade with a PERS system. The Pressure-Equalized Rainscreen System (PERS) is designed to retain moisture and prevent water from reaching the structural substrate. An air layer provides the necessary capillary force and ventilation to facilitate drainage and drying.

The PERS system also uses a joint system, known as infill strips, that reduces the amount of water penetrating the façade. Under balanced pressure conditions, water cannot penetrate the building structure.

Dekton is also the perfect partner for the Elemex Ceramitex® Facade system installed at the hotel. This integrated attachment technology allows the use of mitered corners on 90% of the façade.

Once again, Dekton has become a very interesting façade cladding, this time at the Ette Hotel, where it meets the highest technical requirements without sacrificing on design.

Blanc Concrete to blend the house into its surroundings

The RS Arquitectura studio is the mastermind behind this impressive single family home located in Sant Julià de Vilatorta, in the province of Barcelona (Spain). The creators of this project, which was successfully completed in August 2020, explain the creative concept and the challenges they faced.

The house is located in a prestigious area of natural beauty that RS Arquitectura wanted to highlight from the beginning of the project. For this purpose, the studio planned an L-shaped volume with pure and simple lines, which opens onto the garden and views, maintaining the necessary privacy and intimacy. The house has three levels, perfectly connected with each other, creating a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces.

The façade features three different claddings: Dekton is used as the main cladding, bringing elegance and subtlety to the space; then there is aluminium on the lower parts of the façade; finally, glass makes it possible to achieve this connection between the interior and exterior.

The finish chosen was Dekton Blanc Concrete. It is a material from the Tech Collection, reminiscent of concrete, which features small grey and beige veins on a white background. Its availability in large format slabs of 320 cm make it a perfect choice for a façade.

TR House - Cosentino TR HOUSE 16 173

A non-porous material to withstand humid climates

Dekton was used as the main cladding of the house. It was installed using a cladding system with mechanical fasteners and adhesive cement. In addition to its unquestionable beauty, when it came to choosing this finish, the peace of mind of working with a material of great quality and purity and with the backing of a highly professional company was paramount.

Cosentino provided RS Arquitectura with technical advice throughout the entire construction process on a number of aspects such as the cutting and how to make the most of each slab without compromising on design. Cosentino also collaborated in the design of the façade, the training of the personnel in charge of installing it and the monitoring of the entire project to ensure that there were no problems.

In terms of product features, in addition to the extraordinary size of the slabs, RS Arquitectura highly appreciated Dekton’s zero porosity. In humid climates with large temperature contrasts, such as Sant Julià de Vilatorta, a non-porous material is the best guarantee that it will age well.

In June 2020, Gustavo Marasca, a young and promising Brazilian architect, designed this beautiful private home in Rio Claro, São Paulo, Brazil. In only six months he successfully completed the construction and interior design with a stunning result. The most striking feature of this project is that, in addition to the perfect execution of the building in terms of façade and exterior volume, the architect has worked on a very careful interior design, with a selection of materials and qualities.

And in this selection of finishes, hyper-modern materials such as Dekton Trilium and Silestone Noka are combined with other more classic and timeless ones such as Dekton Natura, Dekton Rio Blanco and Silestone White Zeus.

The kitchen is a spectacular space with its large-format Dekton Natura worktop with rounded edges, which can seat eight people and can be used for showcooking. The material chosen is reminiscent of Carrara marble, but without the disadvantages of marble, which is not suitable for use in wet areas.

The ideal material for every space

The bathrooms are designed to the millimetre, combining countertops with lacquered wooden doors, designer handles and wallpaper. For the master bathroom, a countertop in Silestone Noka (dark brown colour) has been chosen, which creates a contrast with the white lacquered vanities. For the other bathrooms, the architect has opted for Silestone White Zeus with grey or light green lacquered wooden furniture and brushed brass handles.

Another striking feature is the impressive staircase in Dekton Rio Blanco suspended in the living room with its light glass balustrade. Technical attributes such as resistance to sunlight and scratches as well as its undeniably attractive appearance played an important role in the choice of this material. Six 1.2cm thick slabs, measuring 320 x 144 cm, have been used for the staircase to ensure that it will stand the test of time.

An impressive Dekton Trilium façade

The refinement and sensitivity of the interior of the home contrasts with a very architectural Dekton Trilium façade. The Trilium finish is reminiscent of rust. It is a mix of volcanic, grey and black colours and the first 100% recycled Dekton material. Marasca decided to use this material in ‘Slim’ format to create a flawless corten steel effect. Furthermore, this format makes installation easier due to its lighter weight and transforms the façade into something light and modern.

The result is a contemporary and functional home, designed with attention to detail inside and out, with Marasca’s distinctive style. Not surprisingly, this young and promising architect says he wants to transform the lives of his clients through their homes and defends the idea that true beauty is in the details.

This spectacular home in the heart of Cork was completed in 2020 The designer, Michael O’Brien, wanted to do something different on the façade and Dekton immediately came to mind. Michael had discovered Dekton in the showroom of Hickey Granite. When he first saw it, he was impressed with the size of the slabs and the material’s resistance to external factors such as ultra-violet rays, freezing and scratching.

Dekton Kira was fitted on the front façade of the home and on the side walls, which are highly exposed to unfavourable weather conditions. It was also used to frame the windows of the barbecue area (ground floor) in a more aesthetically pleasing way.

The uniqueness of the Ballycotton house lies in the five elements of its façade: Dekton, natural stone, plaster, zinc and wood. The combination of textures works perfectly in both visual and functional terms. The materials used are low maintenance and ideal for a house situated on a cliff top and exposed to Irish weather conditions.

Dekton Kira: the perfect combination with stone

Once Dekton had been selected, the next step was to choose the most suitable colour from an infinite number of options. Michael opted for the Kira colour because it best matched the stone. To do this, he ordered several samples from Cosentino and fitted them, along with the other materials, in the right place and exposed to the light they were to receive. He fell in love with Kira’s small grey veining and texture.

As for the cutting of Dekton Kira, although the original idea was to use it in a large seamless format, in the end O’Brien preferred to cut it into long pieces of different widths. By doing so, the façade achieves a visual effect of greater height.

In this home, twelve 12mm thick slabs were used to clad an area of 100m2. The slabs were ‘glued’ directly onto an existing façade, which precluded the use of other more efficient systems, such as a ventilated façade, but significantly reduced the cost.

The use of five materials, the irregular cutting and its installation with adhesive are the special features of this unusual façade. Without a doubt, the façade is the best introduction to this impressive home perched on the cliffs of Cork.

The shop “Busted” gets a new look

Busted is a fashion shop for young people located in the main shopping area of Silkeborg, in northern Denmark. The shop needed an update to attract a younger and more demanding clientele. During this refurb process, both the façade and the shop window played a key role in attracting customers to the shop.

Busted’s owners commissioned architect Morten Thomsen, founder of MMe Byg Aps, to undertake the renovation and interior design project. Thomsen invested time in researching different cladding solutions that could radically change the Busted façade. In his search, he had the good fortune to come across Cosentino’s Project Manager for the region, who introduced him to the Dekton brand and its countless benefits for façade applications.

Morten was impressed with the 8mm thick slabs, which allow for on-site handling and processing, as well as the use of an invisible adhesive for fixing.

You can’t go wrong with Dekton Danae

MMe Byg Aps studio wanted a colour that would appeal to Busted’s target customers: women with a youthful, casual style, and within a fairly broad age range. From the very beginning, Dekton Danae was a favourite finish because of its brightness and timeless character. Its availability in large format slabs- 320 x 144 cm – and in two textures – grip and matt – were two highly valued aspects in the final choice. After all, it is not for nothing that this is one of Cosentino’s best sellers.

The new Busted shop, which opened in spring 2021, now looks spectacular on one of Silkeborg’s most popular shopping streets. Long-time customers are delighted with the change and, more importantly, the new look is attracting a new clientele who had never thought of coming.

The renovation of the Busted shop is yet another example of the importance of design in public spaces in commercial terms. It also illustrates how quickly the investment is recouped when the project is well planned and you work with a partner like Cosentino.

A ‘facelift’ for Westfield Newmarket

Westfield Newmarket shopping centre in central Auckland, New Zealand, reopened in August 2019. After 18 months of construction work, this shopping centre, which dates back to the 1980s, reopened its doors with a new look, 230 shops and 2,800 parking spaces.

The project involved the renovation and extension of the existing building, doubling its previous size and quadrupling the number of shops. After many months of work and an investment of 790 million dollars, the updated Newmarket rises majestically between 277 and 309 Broadway Street.

It was clear to the team of architects from the Scentre Group, the project developer, that the façade would play a key role in the renovation process. In addition to becoming the most eye-catching design feature, it had to incorporate the latest technology in terms of energy efficiency. A ventilated façade therefore appeared to be the most suitable choice. And for this ventilated façade, there was no better partner than Dekton.

The installation was carried out by the Eurotherm Facades NZ team. Two anchoring systems were used in the process: the Etem Alum Systemand the Keil Anchor. The technical support from Cosentino’s headquarters in Spain was key to the successful execution, providing a prompt and professional advisory service whenever requested.

Sandy-coloured Dekton Danae

The new ventilated façade features 700m2 of 12mm Dekton Danae slabs. In addition to its clean, fresh look, Dekton Danae contrasts with the black window frames and the large glass surfaces.

Dekton Danae is a colour from the Natural collection that is reminiscent of the movement of sand. It is one of Cosentino’s best-sellers as it works perfectly in almost any space. Furthermore, being a neutral colour, it is full of nuances that ensure its versatility and say goodbye to boredom.

In the case of the Westfield Newmarket shopping centre, this effect of movement is the result not only of the richness of the material -Dekton Danae- but also of its clever cutting: all along the façade, in a continuous pattern, one larger row is placed every four rows of slabs.

This feat of design aims to bring the Newmarket in line with the district where it is located: a thriving and trendy shopping area with the best tapas bars, the most alternative art galleries and the most authentic Maori arts and crafts.
