A very personal restoration

For radio presenter Maddy Barber, the mere mention of Serangoon Gardens used to bring back fond childhood memories. Now, she’s calling it home once again. Home now is also the very same house she grew up in.

To add another twist to the story, Barber teamed up with her acclaimed industrial and interior designer brother, Gabriel Tan, for the restoration project of their childhood home.

Serangoon Gardens estate was built in the 1950s by British developer, Steven Charles Macey, to house the British soldiers and airmen of the Royal Air Force (RAF) stationed in Singapore. Fondly nicknamed ang sar lee for the red zinc roofs that were widely used on the houses, Serangoon Gardens is one of the oldest private residential estates on the island with few high-rise buildings. Yet, it still retains its old-world charm amidst the rapid urbanisation surrounding the district.

An art gallery with Dekton as a protagonist

For the project, Tan draws inspiration from the low-rise desert modern architecture and interiors he experienced in Palm Springs, California, which reminded him of the 1960s architecture that the family home was originally built in. The use of mint and terracotta red tones around the house is borne out of the style.

High-performance, high heat, scratch and stain resistant, easy to maintain, and above all, it should look and feel luxurious. These were the requirements in choosing surface materials for the restoration project, and Dekton meets them all.

The highly visually-inclined pair chose three colours from The Collection by Cosentino – Dekton Liquid Shell, Dekton Liquid Sky and Dekton Laurent.

“Dekton offers a wide variety of visual aspects; be it minimalistic, simple, marble or granite effect, Dekton has it all,” says Tan, creative director of Gabriel Tan Studio and Studio Antimatter.

Chromatic harmony for the senses

Overlooking the courtyard, the master bath is an ethereal and holistic sanctuary conceived to calm the mind, dressed in Dekton Liquid Sky. Liquid Sky’s swirling, marbled, cloud-like pattern takes one away into another world.

In the master bedroom, the fluidity of Dekton Liquid Sky pairs beautifully with the terracotta blush coloured wall. The vanity top also features Liquid Sky for perfect harmony.

Dekton Liquid Shell is chosen for its subtlety and softness which complement the mint, terracotta red tones and the terrazzo flooring in the spacious kitchen, which Barber calls the heart of her home.

“For the entire kitchen, I eventually went with the cream coloured, textured Liquid Shell… which I cannot stop looking at and touching because it is so incredibly beautiful,” quips Barber on her choice of colour for the kitchen island, countertop and backsplash.

Dream suites in a classic Lanzarote hotel

The Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa is a classic style hotel on the island of Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. Better known as the Gran Hotel, at 54 metres high and 15 storeys, it holds the record for being the tallest building on the island since it was built in 1970. The five-star hotel, which completed its renovation in April 2021, will reopen in September with fully upgraded suites.

The architect Quirina Morales is responsible for the refurbishment and interior design of these suites. For the bathroom update, she opted for a white material which contrasts with the blue of the sea and is resistant, but at the same time aesthetically pleasing. Silestone Calacatta Gold was chosen as a nod to the classic style of the hotel, which is over 40 years old.

The fifty Calacatta Gold countertops have been designed with a very modern cut that allows towels to be hung, thus avoiding the use of other elements and improving functionality. The washbasins –also in white– have been placed over the countertop, giving a neat and modern effect.

‘God is in the details’

This quote by Mies van der Rohe defines the philosophy of Morales’ studio. In her projects, including the Arrecife Gran Hotel & Spa, she seeks to avoid standardisation in order to offer personalised, quality solutions. This excellence is also achieved in the materials used. The choice of a Silestone finish is consistent with her vision and with the category of a five-star hotel suite.

Calacatta Gold is undoubtedly a Silestone bestseller. Inspired by Carrara marble, it is part of the Eternal collection and features two textures: polished and suede. It is a material that works perfectly for both kitchen worktops and bathroom countertops and is available in 10 edge finishes. In addition, washbasins and shower trays can be manufactured from this material from predefined designs or can be created from scratch. The possibilities are endless: the only limit is the architect’s imagination.

Dekton perfectly adapts to every application

The LD Sevilla hotel is located in the north of the Andalusian capital, next to a service area and motorway exit. This strategically located hotel does not compromise on style, offering its guests a distinguished experience based on quality services and attractive designs. VAU Arquitectura has been in charge of the hotel’s design. The architecture studio relied on Dekton’s ultra-compact surface for a multitude of applications, using 3,100 m2 in the building.

From the exterior façade, which must withstand high levels of solar radiation, to the always busy common areas, such as restaurants and toilets, Dekton’s unique features perfectly meet the needs of a bustling hotel.

LD Sevilla - cosentino 105 fachada recursoDSC 9837 226

A façade with personality

Alejandro Rivero, the architect in charge of the project, took care of every detail of the design. Starting with the façade itself: “We wanted a cladding that would enhance the horizontal joints while concealing the vertical ones. This way, we could highlight one of the hallmarks of the building, which is precisely its horizontality”.

The standard slabs (3200×1440 mm) were cut to three different heights (700 mm/350 mm/175 mm). These were adapted to the façade, which is characterized by different heights, sizes and cantilevers. For these reasons, we needed a versatile and adaptable façade material, something like a tailor-made skin. The slabs were deliberately placed in different stripes, without following a pattern, which creates an interesting contrast, a sort of ‘disorder within order’.

A colour range inspired by nature

Dekton Keon was chosen from the wide range of colours for the façade. This colour is reminiscent of the variable granite formations and surfaces found in the surrounding area.

Dekton’s resistance and low levels of absorption make it ideal for the demanding, daily requirements of a hotel. Dekton Laos, Soker and Sirius colours have been used for the surfaces in the cafeteria and the guests’ bathrooms.

``The versatility of the material helped us solve the technical challenges of the project``
Alejandro Rivero

A material that takes care of details

The LD Sevilla hotel has an outdoor terrace that offers stunning views of the Andalusian capital, a place where you can enjoy a drink at the bar, which is also made with Dekton.

And last but not least, Dekton has been used to clad the main hall, softening the transition between exterior and interior. The versatility of the material, together with some details such as the die-cutting of façade pieces for backlit signs and vents “helped us to solve many technical issues of the project”.

The final result is “a building of clean lines with horizontal stripes enhanced by strong horizontal joints, where we have tried to create a powerful, unified image while maintaining attention to detail”.

Exterior elegance, interior strength

TOPA Sukaldería is located in the heart of San Sebastián´s Gros district (Northern Spain), and occupies a total space of 496 m2, divided over two floors. The ground floor is occupied by the kitchen and the dining lounge, while the bathrooms are located in the basement. Clarity of space, contrasts, an upbeat, cosy environment, myriad ways of welcoming customers, high-quality decorative and architectural products, and the use of recycled materials are just some of the key concepts that define this project.

The ultra-compact surface Dekton, and the ecological Silestone Eco Line range were chosen for this design. More than 400 m2 of Cosentino products were used in this inspirational culinary project. The spectacular kitchen and dining lounge are located on the ground floor. In this large space, the emphasis is on the visual contrast between the natural, marbled finishes of the Dekton Kelya and Dekton Aura tones, and the wooden planks and metallic textures that permeate the entire room.

Topa Sukaldería - v Topa Sukalderia 4 272

Resistance and hygiene for the most exposed surfaces

One of the priorities of this design was to harness the concept of an open kitchen, to allow customers and diners to see the chefs’ creative process first-hand. The Dekton Aura worktops and counters connect the kitchen with the rest of the room in an elegant harmony. Their wonderful pure white clarity, together with their distinctive veins, make them the room’s stand-out feature.

The safety and hygiene offered by Dekton when handling food, its high tolerance for both heat and cold without suffering aesthetic or structural changes, its high resistance to stains and scratching, and the availability of large format cut to size were determining factors in the choice of Dekton surfacing.

Furthermore, Dekton Aura was used as counter for the furniture located throughout the dining room, bringing greater visual harmony to the space as a whole.

Large format to minimize joints

The contrast between the stainless steel, which can be seen in abundance throughout the kitchen, and the deep, dark, matte finish colour of Dekton Kelya, is quite simply magnificent.

In addition to the beauty and outstanding technical benefits of Dekton, the option of installing large format slabs for the kitchen walls, with minimal visible joints, gives the space a greater sense of continuity and aesthetic elegance.

Environmentally friendly materials

For the sake of elegance and functionality, the Starlight colour from the Silestone Eco Line was used for the wall cladding in the bathrooms. This material was chosen in line with the use of recycled wood shavings for the ceilings and other cladding within the premises.

The emphatic black colour of Starlight provides the perfect contrast to the white of the bathroom elements and the grey shades of the flooring. The scintillating gleam of the mirror shards which are incorporated into slabs of Silestone® Eco Line balances the light and the darkness in the room, and creates an unexpectedly bewitching visual effect.

Silestone H-Line, easy maintenance for a heavy-duty washbasin

Scandic The Reef is more than just a hotel. Its attractions and facilities which are typical of a water park plus its Caribbean decor, offer a completely unique experience to visitors. Everything at Scandic The Reef is a journey into nature and fun, where you can hear the sound of rushing water around every corner. This tranquillity is also present in the cloakrooms, where the H-Line washbasins by Silestone can be found.

The hotel’s interior designers were looking for a material that was both highly resistant and visually appealing. The H-Line washbasins by Silestone, in Aluminio Nube, provide a clean and neat appearance, including features such as mitred edges, which give a smooth finish to the entire structure.

In addition to its beautiful design, Silestone is easy to maintain and clean, it withstands daily use and does not lose its properties or colour consistency over time.

Valdebebas 127 is a residential project with an exclusive location along the edge of Valdebebas Central Park in northern Madrid. The development consists of 201 two-, three- and four-bedroom homes, all with double orientation, views of the park, storage rooms and parking spaces.

This project’s most notable features are its façade, thermal and acoustic efficiency, as well as its incorporation of the latest technology and application of innovative, next-generation materials for construction, architecture and design, such as Dekton and Silestone.

A project designed to be energy efficient

Dekton has been chosen as the façade cladding for this project due to its excellent aesthetic and building qualities, which ensure exceptional durability and extraordinary thermal performance.

The selected Dekton colours – Warm and Korus – bring harmony and restraint to the development. Warm’s white finish gives the building a cosy feel and brings it into harmony with its surroundings. Korus’ grey shade has been installed to highlight particular parts of the façade, complementing the colour Warm to perfection. The pedestal has been surfaced with Domoos, a very elegant black shade that facilitates a unique contrast with the larger areas.

The exceptional qualities of Dekton were a key factor in its choice as the façade material. Its large format, as well as its variety of textures and colours, have allowed us to respond and emphasise our play on form and volume.

Silestone, easy to maintain aesthetics

The Valdebebas 127 project was conceived with the idea that its interiors, like the exteriors that surround them, would be of the highest quality and provide design that stands out.

The Silestone Kador model has been chosen for the shower trays, providing the excellent durability of this material, which is entirely impervious to stains and scratches. The colour chosen for this application – Silestone Blanco Zeus – brings a sense of cleanliness, hygiene and space to the environment.

Dekton is a material with zero porosity that neither expands nor contracts with changes in temperature, so it doesn’t degrade or deteriorate. It’s a unique product.

White Zeus, resistance that captivates

The kitchens in this housing development were conceived to give customers top performance. Silestone guarantees worktop quality, durability, low porosity, stain resistance, easy maintenance and cleaning, scratch and knock resistance, a wide range of colours and textures, and large-format and custom manufacturing.

The search for light meant that the colour chosen for the worktops was the purest white: Silestone Blanco Zeus. The kitchens are elegant, restrained and light-filled thanks to Silestone.

Finding beauty in everyday use

Located in formerly barren and unattractive land, Tanah Merah Country Club has become one of the most exclusive and well-known country clubs in Asia in recent years. Thanks to its luxurious facilities, designed to the smallest detail, together with its two golf courses good enough to host championships, the club has become a benchmark venue that welcomes world-famous celebrities among its top clients.

The latest refurbishment of Tanah Merah, recently made by the interior design company Indez Design, upgraded most of the Club’s facilities – changing rooms, toilets, lounges and outdoor dining areas – all from a very clear perspective: to maintain the stylish atmosphere of the areas and to enable easy maintenance of much-used everyday facilities such as the washbasins or the terrace tables. Dekton and Silestone has been selected because of their technical features and attractive designs.

Colours designed to last

The toilet and changing area is one of the most frequently used areas in a country club like Tanah Merah. One of Indez Design’s major concerns was to come up with a material that would maintain the stylish and unique look of the club but at the same time, would not be damaged over time and due to ongoing use. Silestone met both the technical features of robustness, as it is scratch-resistant, and the design requirements, with two classic colours: Royal Reef and Amazon.

Royal Reef has been used for the women’s changing room and toilet and provides the complex with a bright beige tone, quite in line with the wood and warm tones used in all the other facilities.

As for the men’s changing room, it has been refurbished with Silestone in Amazon, which conveys simplicity and energy thanks to its bronze shades and a very well-balanced texture.

Dekton, highly resistant to UV rays

Dekton has been used for the gazebo tables located on the outside terrace in Keon, a sandy tone that reminds us, precisely, of the bunkers of the two Tanah Merah golf courses. Indez Design selected Cosentino’s ultra-compact surface due to its resistance to external agents such as UV rays and humidity, two key features for elements intended for outdoor use.

In the refurbishment of the Tanah Merah Country Club, we have managed to make the most of all the benefits and features that make Cosentino materials unique: high resistance to everyday use and external factors, and colours perfectly designed to simulate any environment.
