House for Axel

PALMA
Ocuilan de Arteaga, Mexico

The project is part of ‘Reconstruir México,’ a program launched in the wake of the 2017 earthquake to build new homes for families in highly vulnerable situations.

The teams visited the households assigned to them in order to determine the specific needs of each member. On a limited budget, this small house was built for Axel, an 8-year-old boy who lives with his grandparents. The family made two fundamental requests: a direct connection between the kitchen and an exterior space and a third bedroom for visiting relatives.

The scheme is configured by a series of walls that frame views, which gives a tiny space a sense of breadth and depth. The floor plan is a simple geometry: a square with 7-meter sides and a small patio at the center that becomes the heart of the home. The three bedrooms are at the back of the house, while the kitchen and patio are in front.
